(GCI)OverviewFounded in 1919, the Amberg Club (a women’s socialclub) of the Catholic Diocese of the Kansas City-St.Joseph established a volunteer school and clinic forMexican immigrants who had settled in the Westsideneighborhood of Kansas City, Miss<strong>our</strong>i. Originallyworking out of the church basement of Our Lady ofGuadalupe Church, the settlement house becameknown as the Guadalupe Center and served hundredsof Mexican families annually.Today, the Guadalupe Centers, Inc. (GCI) is acommunity based development organization 501(c)(3) not for profit committed to improving the qualityof life for families within the Latino communities ingreater Kansas City. The organization offers a fullrange of services to its constituents in the areas of:Education, Youth Development, Health and SocialServices, Workforce Development, Financial LiteracyPrograms and Cultural Events. Operating out of9 facilities, GCI provided services to over 8,900individuals in 2012.GCI has been affiliated with United Way of GreaterKansas City (since 1924) and is the original affiliatefor the National Council of La Raza (since 1980) inKansas City. Plaza de Niños (PdN)Early Childhood Education CenterOpened in 1985, PdN is a year-round bilingual,bicultural early childhood education center.Accredited by the National Association for theEducation of Young Children, PdN provides itsstudents with a safe and healthy environment,teachers who are well trained, access to excellentteaching materials, and a curriculum that isculturally sensitive, appropriately challengingand developmentally sound. PdN is also a localparticipant in the National Head Start Programserving qualified children ages 2-5 years.PdN Student Demographics86% of PdN children enrolled are minorityDouglass Elementary School was acquired byGCI for AVHS in 2012PdN is housed in the Francis Family Institute locatedin the Metropolitan Community College Penn ValleyCampus. Through its partnership, PdN has access toa state of the art facility and serves as a lab schoolfor college students in the field of early education.GuadalupeEducational SystemOne of the major programmatic pillars of GCI for the past three decadeshas been education. This is best highlighted by Plaza de Niños Early (PdN)Childhood Education Center (established in 1985) and Alta Vista High School(started in 1990). Academia de NiñosElementary School (AdN)Alta Vista CharterHigh School (AVHS)In 2012 the Academia de Niños Elementary School wasopened with an inaugural Kindergarten class of 60 students.Located in the MCC-Penn Valley Campus the school openedfor its first year of operation. The school will add a gradelevel per year, every year up to 5th grade. The schoolwhen fully operational will house up to 360 students gradesKindergarten to 5th grade.Academia de Niños Charter Elementary School will moveto 1711 Broadway which is located in the Crossroadsneighborhood for the 2013/2014 school year. The schoolopens in July of 2013, and will offer Kindergarten and1st grade classes. The school will provide a comprehensiveacademic curriculum that supports the development of eachchild in a culturally relevant environment. Spanish, Music,Art, and Physical Education will also be provided.Opened in 1990 as an alternative school and convertedto a charter school in 1999, Alta Vista High School issponsored by the University of Central Miss<strong>our</strong>i. The schoolis currently located at1722 Holly Street with an enrollmentof 208 and a teaching staff of 24 (15 full time and 9part-time). Alta Vista High School provides a comprehensiveeducational program to help students master the skills andknowledge necessary to graduate from high school andtransition to post-secondary studies, or school to careerprograms that will prepare them for a productive andsuccessful adult life. Through the Early College Program,students have the opportunity to earn a significant numberof college credits before graduating. A major focusthroughout the curriculum is content area literacy, rigor,and preparing students for college level work. Academicinterventions and tutoring is provided for students needingadditional support.Alta Vista CharterMiddle School (AVMS)Located at 1711 Broadway since 2010 the school providesclasses for students grades 6th through 8th grade. With anenrollment of 160 students and a instructional staff of 15it is home to the Jaguar Warriors. Focused on a rigorous,standards-based curriculum Alta Vista Middle School pridesitself on not only its determination to prepare students tobe at grade level by ninth grade, but also its focus on socialjustice projects and fine arts programs that have includedKansas City’s first Youth Mariachi.Alta Vista Middle School will move in to the 1720Holly (former AV High School) building for school year2013/2014. This move will allow the school to increaseenrollment to 210 students. It is the only Middle school(Public or Private) located in the Westside neighborhood ofKansas City, Miss<strong>our</strong>i.AdN Elementary School opened in the Fall of 2012AVMS students at the 8th grade graduationAVHS is proud of its recentaccomplishments in achieving its annualyearly progress goals for the end ofc<strong>our</strong>se state assessment tests in bothMathematics and Communication Arts.AVHS has been effective in increasingthe number of students testing atAdvanced and Proficient in Mathematicswhile significantly reducing those testingat Basic or Below Basic levels. A similartrend is occurring with CommunicationArts. In Mathematics, AVHS has ranked1st and 2nd respectively over the pasttwo years. Also, the school is findingsuccess with its English LanguageLearner (ELL) populations, which overthe past three years have outpaced theELL population for the KCMO Districtand the State on both the Math andCommunication Arts end of c<strong>our</strong>se test.5 6

CALMECACYouth EnrichmentCALMECAC Enrichment Program is GCI’s out-of-schoolprogram aimed at serving local Latino youth. Through thisprogram, which is done in conjunction with the Upper RoomMinistries, GCI provides after school and summer literacyand academic support services to area children in gradesK-8. During the school year, the program is operatedat two sites for 3 h<strong>our</strong>s each day immediately followingschool. CALMECAC serve students from f<strong>our</strong> differentschools: Holy Name School, Our Lady of Guadalupe,Primitivo Garcia and Foreign Language Academy.2012 Youth ParticipantsServed by Activity1279 total participants servedSummer Enrichment Program childrenattending a KC Royals gameIn the summer, the program runs full day. The morningprogram consists of a summer school component focusedon reading. The afternoon session provides diversionactivities. The program also incorporates life skillscurriculum that explores life skill education and servicelearning.2012 HighlightsGCI in collaboration with the Kansas City, MO Parks and RecreationDepartment continue to work together to maximize participation amongWest Side Latino youth in recreational and fitness activities such as:• Summer Fitness Classes• KC Club Summer DancesGCI and the Youth Organized Athletics Department would like to thank theKansas City Royals for their continuous support of GCI, Organized baseballteams, and all of the youth these program serve. Without this support thebaseball teams from <strong>our</strong> T-Ball league to <strong>our</strong> Alta Vista High school teamwould be without much of the equipment necessary. The benefits GCI hasenjoyed through this wonderful partnership are:• A new baseball field at Mulkey Park. This was led by the KC Royalsin partnership with Major League Baseball, and the KCMO Parksand Recreation department (picture shown on cover)• Tickets for select KC Royals games• Equipment Drives at designated KC Royals home gamesYOUTHDEVELOPMENTIn 2012 the program served over 389 children.Youth RecreationThe Youth Development Program is one of the agency’soldest programs. When the Guadalupe Center beganservices in 1919, recreational outlets for immigrantMexicans in the Westside were nonexistent. To this day,the largest year-round youth diversion and recreationalprograms for Westside & Latino children is operatedby GCI. The primary goal of the Youth Program is toprovide Urban Core youth ages 5 - 20 years of agean organized year-round athletics and recreationalprograms.Housed in the Sacred Heart Youth Center and gymnasiumthe Guadalupe Centers, Inc., Youth Program provides awide array of activities for interested Urban core youth.The sports program runs year-round with Basketball,Baseball, Flag Football, Soccer, Volleyball and Golf.Besides Athletics GCI provides for safe opportunities foryoung people to socially engage. From youth clubs toorganized dances GCI has offered community youth aplace to meet, interact and have fun.9 10GCI partners with Kansas City Parks and Recreation toprovide a Club KC on the Westside. This project providesa weekly dance hall and recreation center for middleschool youth during the summer vacation months. Culinary ArtsCulinary Arts TrainingGCI’s Culinary Arts Institute is an intensive twelveweek, career ladder training and employmentprogram that trains unemployed and underemployedindividuals as preparatory cooks. The program isapproved and certified to operate as a CulinaryArts Training Program by the Miss<strong>our</strong>i Department ofHigher Education.Culinary Arts2012 Participant Demographics2012 Highlights• Through a $200,000 appropriation from Department of Labor during2010-2012, 90 individuals completed Culinary Arts Institute (CAI)training• 105 individuals obtained the National ServSafe certification recognizedand held in high regard by the Food Industry• Participants placed in employment attained an average h<strong>our</strong>ly wage of$9.06 plus fringe benefits that included health insurance• Prostart, a culinary curriculum specifically designed for high schoolstudents was provided to 36 students from Alta Vista Charter HighSchool over the c<strong>our</strong>se of two semestersHealthy food demonstrationsat the LatinoExpo Americas by GCI culinary staffWORKFORCE &FINANCIAL PROG.The Culinary Arts Institute offers a comprehensivestudy of the food service industry. The programis designed to prepare participants to gainemployment as a Preparatory Cook in restaurants,hospitals, hotels and other businesses providingfood services. Participants learn the techniquesof food preparation through c<strong>our</strong>ses in basic andintermediate food preparation, menu planning,nutrition, and beverage control. The programalso exposes individuals to catering events, formaltable setting, interpersonal skills building, basicservice rules/techniques, and skills needed tooperate kitchen equipment. Job PlacementCatering ServiceInstitutional CateringDuring 2012 GCI’s Job Placement program, ProjectTrabajo, assisted 612 individuals. People servedincluded area residents and others as far awayas Olathe, Shawnee Mission, Kansas City, Kansas,Belton, Liberty, Lee’s Summit and Independence.All of these individuals were either unemployed orunderemployed seeking employment or upgradedemployment. Despite the sluggish job market, ProjectTrabajo was successful in placing 325 individuals ineither contractual, part time or full time employment.Areas of employment included manufacturing, hotelindustry, home care services, food industry, smallbusiness, and landscaping.During 2012 Project Trabajo hosted several job fairsin collaboration with various employers including theMiss<strong>our</strong>i Department of Transportation.FACTS• Project Trabajo assisted 120 individuals withon-line job applications• Project Trabajo assisted 42 individuals withfiling unemployment claims benefits• Project Trabajo assisted 50 individuals withdevelopment of a resumeJob Placement2012 Participant DemographicsGCI’s Catering Service Department providesmeals daily for both the organization’s programparticipants as well as for other institutionalpartners in the Kansas City area. These programsand partners include: Our Lady of GuadalupeElementary School, GES schools, Calmecac Afterschool Program, Calmecac Summer EnrichmentProgram, the Guadalupe Senior Citizen Program(Congregate and Homebound), and the SwopeCorridor Renaissance/Upper Room SummerEnrichment Program. In total for 2012, GCI providedup to 1,600 meals to individuals on a daily basis.Event CateringGCI provides catering services to events hostedat its facilities. In 2012 GCI catered over 500events. These events included meetings, businessreceptions, workshops, seminars, retreats, luncheons,anniversaries, birthday parties, cultural events,wedding receptions, public forums, and privatedinners.GCI event catering service catered over 500 events in 2012Credit UnionThe Kansas City Terminal/Guadalupe Centers, Inc.Employees Federal Credit Union (KCT/GCIEFCU)is a low income minority designated not for profitspecializing in serving persons who are creditchallenged. The credit union is also a certifiedCommunity Development Financial Institution (CDFI)since March of 2010.The mission of the credit union is to help <strong>our</strong>members gain Personal Financial Success through theuse of a variety of financial services.
