It is not, however, a skill that can or should be assumed incollege. Participants will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to see methods by which critical thinking skills for first-semestercollege students at Western Kentucky University were increased by 28%. Instructional materials will be availablefor review as well as samples of assessment instruments with <strong>the</strong>ir resulting data. Small group exercises will facilitatefull group discussion. Teachers from varying grade levels <strong>and</strong> disciplines will benefit.http://www.everyonethinks.orgPresenters: Sharon Buzzard, Steve Wiegenstein, Cort Basham, Paula Trafton, & Sara McCaslin, WesternKentucky UniversityThursday, 5/27/201009:30amSaxonyDynamic Song Performance – Skill Collides with Critical <strong>and</strong> Creative ThinkingArtistic skill-based activities such as singing are not usually associated with Critical Thinking; however, asystematic approach to teaching vocal performance skills provides singers of any age with <strong>the</strong> ability to create aninsightful performance. The structure <strong>and</strong> concepts presented here for <strong>the</strong> singer may also be applied to o<strong>the</strong>r traditionalcreative arts. Vocal technique is <strong>the</strong> toolbox for <strong>the</strong> sound of <strong>the</strong> voice; <strong>the</strong> brain, using critical <strong>and</strong> creativethinking skills, is <strong>the</strong> toolbox for an imaginative presentation. This session presents a successful process of teachingstudents to use <strong>the</strong>se skills to create dynamic performance of art song.Presenter: Joyce Wolf, Eastern Kentucky UniversityThursday, 5/27/201009:30amTerrace BallroomWhy should I believe that? Argument Mapping for Critical-Thinking SkillsEducators are concerned <strong>and</strong> increasingly aware of <strong>the</strong> need to help students to develop <strong>the</strong>ir critical thinkingskills. Yet, evidence seems to suggest that while educators believe that it is very important to teach criticalthinking skills, few actually devote time to teaching students how to think critically. Argument Mapping is a way tovisually represent <strong>the</strong> logical structure of an argument. Participants will be fully engaged in this workshop throughdiscussions, demonstrations, <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>outs. Participants will be given information on free downloads so <strong>the</strong>y can usesome software items available at no-cost.Presenters: Caroline Reid & Paula Jones, Eastern Kentucky UniversityKentucky <strong>Council</strong> on Postsecondary Education
