TECHNICAL DATA SHEETTECHNICALSPECIFICATIONS ANDSTANDARDSConforms to ISO 11600-F&G-20LM.Listed by the UK Water FittingsByelaws Scheme for use in contactwith potable water, once cured.HOW TO USESurface preparationEnsure that surfaces to be sealed areclean, dry, sound and free from frost, release agents, old sealants and othercontaminants which could impairadhesion. All surfaces should becleaned and degreased by wiping witha suitable solvent such asDOW CORNING ® R40 UniversalCleaner on a clean oil- and lint-freecloth before application of sealant.Note: When usingany solvent, alwaysprovide adequate ventilation.Avoid heat, sparks and open flames.Use solvent resistant gloves. Observeand follow all precautions listed onsolvent container label.MaskingAreas adjacent to the joints should bemasked with tape to preventcontamination of the substrates and toensure a neat sealant line.Maskingtape should be removedimmediately after tooling.PrimingAll joint surfaces other than glass andglazed ceramics should be primed. For specific advice, please refer to theDOW CORNING ® Primers' Guide orcontact one of Dow CorningsRegional Service Centers for technicalassistance.DOW CORNING 781 Acetoxy Silicone Sealant2Ref. no. 62-0995D-01Back-up materialsWhen back-up material is required, aclosed cell polyethylene backer rod isrecommended. Low tack polyethylenetape should be used in joints tooshallow to allow the use of a backerrod. Back-up materials provide backpressure and prevent three sidedadhesion that limits sealant movementcapability.FinishingThe joint should be tooled within5 minutes of application to ensure goodcontact between the sealant and thesubstrate. Toolingof the sealant alsogives a smooth, professional finish.Clean-upExcess sealant may be cleaned off toolsand non-porous surfaces whilst in anuncured state usingDOW CORNINGR40 Universal Cleaner. If sealant ismisapplied to porous substrates, itshould be left until it is just cured andthen removed by peeling, cutting orother mechanical means. Care shouldbe taken not to damage plastic orcoated surfaces.JOINT DESIGNThe sealant joint width should bedesigned to accommodate themovement capability of the sealant. When designing joints usingDOW CORNING 781 SiliconeSealant, the minimum width should be6mm. For joints between 6-12mmwide, a seal depth of 6mm is required. For joints above 12mm wide, a widthto depth ratio of 2:1 should be used.In situations where fillet joints areneeded, a minimum of 6mm sealantbite to each substrate is recommended. For joint dimensions greater than25mm, please contact one ofDow Cornings Regional ServiceCenters for technical assistance.Figure 1: Deep joint.DOW CORNING781Silicone SealantTwo non-porous substratesFigure 2: Shallow joint.DOW CORNING781Silicone SealantFigure 3: Fillet joint.6mmminimum20 mm12mm10 mmClosed cellpolyethylenebacker foam6 mmLow tack tapeTwo non-porous substratesDOW CORNING 781Silicone SealantPolyethylene backer rod6mm minimumHANDLING PRECAUTIONSProduct safety information requiredfor safe use is not included. Before handling, read product andsafety data sheets and container labelsfor safe use, physical and health hazardinformation.
