HISTORY2002-2010As well as moving from once a year broadcasts, lasting only a month, to year-round 24/7 web-streaming, the eventsalso moved to a more regular year round affair. In addition to their FM launch and closing parties, Subcity began holdingregular events throughout the year to help fund and promote the station. An early series of parties held on the RenfrewFerry, included a night featuring a 15 year old Hudson Mohawke (as DJ Itchy) in March 2002 and a Brazilian Boat partyincluding a live samba troupe and Capoeira dancers in November 2002.2003 saw the station’s live sessions show ‘City Sessions’ pick up Silver at the Student Radio Association Student RadioAwards in the Best Specialist Music category. It was earlier that year that ‘up-and-coming’ Glasgow band FranzFerdinand had recorded a 20min live-session for the show.By October 2003 the station was able to pull 1200 people to The Arches for a Glasgow Block Party, a winning formulareplicated for the next few years. The haphazard held together by tape nature of the station still shone through though:with the 2004 the sold-out 10th Birthday Party, which featured 3 arches of music, the biggest lineup the station had everbooked, live graffiti artists, breakdancers and 1800 tickets sold... only for the team to discover that the party was about tobe held a year early, the events team kept that quiet until after the night. Regardless, regular Subcity events at The Archescontinued into 2005, and won them the Student Radio Award for Best Marketing in November 2004 and silver in the samecategory in 2005.In the summer of 2005, Subcity managed to blag a small stage on Byres Road at the West End Festival Opening ParadeStreet Party. Their presence at the festival has grown consistently each year, with last year’s stage in Kelvingrove Parkattracting an 800 strong crowd of hungover clubbers and families alike, providing respite from the tribute bands, burgervans and balloon vendors.By 2006, the Block Party era at the Arches was coming to an end, and after a year of under performing events, includinga doomed weekly night at the Sub Club shared with XFM, Radio 1 and Radio Magnetic, the station made a moveto smaller nights with a house party vibe at the Research Club in November 2007. For the next two years these nightsbecame somewhat of an institution, regularly so busy that hundreds of disappointed punters had to be turned away atthe door. These events sparked a wave of imitation nights still continuing today.Despite the events in 2006 under performing, that year the station managed to set up regular outside broadcasts fromclubs across the city, and recorded some of the most experimental sessions in the station’s history including exclusivecollaborations between rarely seen avant-garde musicians like Chris Corsano, Tight Meat and Richard Youngs.Over the past two years the station has built on the success of the Research Club events with a wide array of packed outnights across the city including two Halloween parties at the Art School, a secret party in a Merchant City flat, monthlysocials at The Ivy, a last minute free party in Pivo Pivo which saw DJ Assault playing until 4am, a Dark Party in The Lite Clubwhere the lighting budget got spent on more bassbins, running blacked out busses to a secret party in The Big Joint... all inthe name of keeping things interesting and staying fresh. In addition to the club nights so far in 2009/10 the station has alsotaken over an open top tour bus for an alternative freshers’ tour of the city as well as a recording a live session in a disusedUniversity Bookshop. And now, fresh-faced and re-established as a major player on the Glasgow club scene, Subcity will be bringing togethersome of the highlights of the last 15 years under one roof, in the newly refurbished Arches, and like all good birthdayparties there will be cake for all.15 YEARS OF SUBCITY RADIO

BIRTHDAYPARTYARTISTS 1/2DemaAs half of Glasgow duo Freakmenoovers, Subcity and Dema go waaay back. He held down a show in the Subcitysweatbox for 5 years before moving on to a studio with windows at Radio Magnetic. He had amajor part to play in the development of both the Arches Block Parties (2003/4) and the Research Club parties of 2007/8,and for that has been dubbed the Subcity guru. Continuing to push things forward into the next era of Subcity parties,Shaun will be tearing the club up with Baltimore, Bass, Hip Hop and anything that will get the crowd sweating, perhapseven Happy Hardcore if we let him.Slave to the RhythmA relative newcomer to the station (and the city), DOMM has already gained a reputation on the Glasgow houseand techno scene for his energetic and dedicated approach to his show, and is becoming the go-to guy for all yourdeep house and techno needs. Slave to the Rhythm on Subcity regularly features interviews with ever bigger and moreinfluential players in electronic music such as Sebastian Leger and Carl Craig, whilst managing to keep it local withregular guest appearances from some of the best of the Glasgow club scene including Subculture, Slam and Sensu.Thirty TwoPasty and Twonko are a couple of fannies if you’ve ever seen them. Currently serving community service for pettyvandalism, they’ve been chucked out of more clubs than they’ve played in. Still though they manage to hold down aweekly Subcity show and a regular night which has seen the Research Club rammed to capacity on every date so far.Expect relentless electro house bangers with huge amounts of energy... if they don’t get chipped out before hand.15 YEARS OF SUBCITY RADIO
