GRADING: Each student will be given a payroll sheet and an initial bank balanceof $ 900. At the end of the course you will “buy” your grade. You will need at least$900 to buy an “A”; $800 to buy a “B”; $700 to buy a “C”; and $600 to buy the mostshameful grade (other than an “F”)---a grade of “D.”You will keep track of your pay. Every class you will update your records, notingany loss or gain of dollars. If you lose dollars (or gain them…) you will note thereason for your loss (or gain) as well as the remaining balance. Failure to keep thisrecord will cause you to lose dollars. If you miss a class, you lose $10, nomatter what your excuse. Failure to turn in an assignment on time will costyou $10 per day (Monday through Thursday) for every day that it islate, also no matter what your excuse.You must complete to maintain a passing grade in the course:1. Participation in Class2. Speeches (two formal speeches, a variety of informal)3. Small Group Project/Small Group Project Presentation--in-class, in public4. Portfolio (Notebook)5. Homework Assignments (All must be completed to pass the course.)1. Participation: Every class day we will be doing some activities, asindividuals and as groups. Failure to participate will cost you dollars. Eachday in class you will have notes concerning our activities that day; should youmiss a day of class, it is your responsibility to photocopy notes from one ofyour classmates. You will note whose notes you are borrowing on your copyof the notes.2. Small Group Project: In the very first week of school I am going to put youin a group that you will work with all semester long. In the first part of thecourse you will be completing various tasks I assign. In the next part of thecourse your group will work together to prepare a small group project thatwill result in a group presentation to the class. For a final, your group willdesign a public presentation which will be delivered to the collegecommunity.3. Speeches: Each student will give two of these, one informative, and onepersuasive. You must give both of these to pass the course. The first speechis informative, at least 3 minutes long but no longer than 5 minutes. In thesecond speech you will follow the same guidelines, but your speech will bepersuasive. (I will be giving you lots more information about this later.)4. Portfolio (Notebook): I want you to save everything you do in this class in athree-ring binder. This will include all your handouts, group work, andhomework. This will not only be reference material for you in the future, butit will be the proof that you have earned the grade you deserve at the end ofthe course.
5. Homework Assignments: You will be demonstrating your understanding ofthe course material through the completion of a number of homeworkassignments. These assignments will receive “grades,” and your work willbe completed on time and according to standards. It may be necessary foryou to repeat assignments to meet standards; however, as long as allassignments are always completed on time, you will lose no dollars. Anexception to this rule will be if you turn in an assignment that is devoid ofany academic quality, or an assignment that is not your own. In that case,you could receive a fine---and dishonesty will result in a failure of the course.Technical ExpertiseWhile this course requires no technical expertise, you are going to be usingcomputers, and some of you will be learning computer technology that you donot already possess. Each student will1. become familiar with computer search engines and will be able to use these toobtain information to support speeches, class projects, group projects;2. learn how to critically evaluate information found on the internet;3. become familiar with the use of Power Point and learn how to prepare a slideshow for use in public presentations; and4. become familiar with the use of additional technologies (including but notlimited to the use of overhear projection, video clips and audio clips) inadditional public presentations and will learn guidelines for using these.General Education Learning Outcomes1. Student speeches will be logically organized and clearly presented.2. Student essays will be logically organized, syntactically coherent, andgrammatically correct.3. Students will use bibliographical and web sources proficiently for the sake ofpreparing and presenting speeches and a small group project. This also meansthat they will know how to employ those resources without plagiarizing them.4. Students will understand more deeply the rich complexity of culture, thediversity of cultures and they will appreciate the similarities and differenceswithin a culture.5. Students will exhibit technical proficiency with the use of Power Point in thepreparation and delivery of public presentations.
