The art of politicsArtist Keets Taylorlocks oft-feudingcommisisoners inpermanent debate onthe wall at Bubba’s.NEWSTHE HERALD OCTOBER 17, 2008 11Diners at Bubba’s Barbecue, asemi-north Mecklenburg institutionof semi-sorts, had yet anothersurprise this week when they discoveredan almost life-size muralof current and former county commissionersParks Helms and JimPuckett playing checkers, affixed toa section booth that guards the entranceto the dining room. Actually, they’re not really playing checkersin the painting, they’re arguingacross a checker board. The mural is the work ofHuntersville’s Keets Taylor, aportrait artist who occasionallydelves into the public realm. Taylordreamed up the idea for this pieceafter she was contacted by Bubba’sowner Ralph “Bubba” Miller. Milleroriginally wanted a mural on theoutside of his building on SunsetRoad, but he and Taylor decidedthat that would be a feast for vandals.Miller has an offbeat sense ofhumor – restaurant patrons arefamiliar with his “grits tree” besidethe parking lot and the very separate“men and boys” urinals in themen’s restroom — and while tryingto think of something to sate thatdesire, Taylor came up with theidea for the political portrait.“I like humor, too,” she says.Taylor knows Puckett and Helmsto varying degrees, but wasn’t sureshe could get them to sit for a photothat she could turn into a portrait(she does most of her portrait researchwith a camera). As it turnsout, both men were delighted.“I thought it was great and Parksdid, too,” Puckett said during lastweekend’s dual portrait unveiling. The four-foot-high, seven-footwidemural is painted on coatedplywood. The two former (or soonto-beformer, Helms is steppingdown in December after 18 years)commissioners are dressed in theirstandard-issue commission meetingattire, sans jackets. Puckett iswearing his trademark suspenders;Helms has on one of his favoritedark red ties.In a nod to literal political correctness,Helms, a Democrat, is seatedon the left, in front of a stack of“Helms for Commissioner” campaignsigns. Republican Puckett is seatedon the right, his signs behind him. Ina nod to charitable treatment of thesubjects, Puckett appears to have abit more hair than in real life andHelms’ waistline received a … well, call it a budget cut.“I wanted everyone to enjoy it,”says Taylor. “I hope this puts a littlehumor into some lives.”Adds Miller, “I can’t wait to seethe expression on people’s faces(when they see it).”The masterpiece is available forviewing during Bubba’s normalbusiness hours (www.bubbasbarbecue.com).The restaurant is locatedon Sunset Road, just west of I-77at Exit 16.— Tucker MitchellGold& SilverRecycling CenterWe buy your old gold jewelryand gold and silver coinsSouth Lake Shopping CenterPark Road Shopping Center 704-527-1717South Lake Shopping Center 704-895-1308Manchester Cornelius Village• Rock 704-895-1308Hill 803-324-5292www.brownleejewelers.comAW6181270Above, Keets Taylor with hercreation at Bubba’s Barbecue.Left, former commissioner JimPuckett strikes a pose with hislikeness.Buying or Selling,CALL!HuntersvilleReal EstateHighland Creek 2BR2.5BA with loft, fireplace, greatroom w/laminate flooring, 2 car garage, welllandscaped, fenced yard, patio, etc. $149,900Covington Updated 3BR2BA with gas fireplace, laminate flooring, master suite w/tray ceiling, garden tub/separate shower, side entry 2 cargarage, fenced yard, patio, warranty... $170,000Cabarrus Crossing Beautifully upgraded3BR2BA ranch, microwave, walk-in pantry,2 car garage, porch, patio, 1800+ sq ft. $170,000Sherwood Forest 3BR2BA custom brick home, formals, den, spacious rooms, large patio & lot, extensive landscaping, warranty, etc. $279,000Hambright Road 71+/- acres. $7,990,875RentalsHuntersville 2BR, fresh carpet, etc. $550/monthDavidson Leased! $600/monthDavidson 2BR2BA, formals, family room, tile, hardwoods, new HVAC, porch, deck $900/monthWe Proudly Represent these &can assist you with many more!REALTORS®704-875-3999“We Deliver”HuntersvilleRealEstate.comTUCKER MITCHELLUSED AND DISCOUNTTRAILERS
