In a general way, the style of scientific writing is (or should be) distinctive in twoprincipal ways. First and foremost, scientific writing should be simple and clear. Itspurpose is not to entertain or to paint pretty pictures, but to inform. But, you say, why should scientific writing be simple, plain, and ordinary? Whycan’t it be interesting? I argue, and argue strongly, that good scientific writing is oftenbeautiful in its elegant simplicity. However, if you are faced with a choice betweenexpressing a thought with a beautiful but complex metaphor or with simple, concrete words, choose the concrete words. There is really only one essential goal inscientific writing: clarity. And short words are not necessarily dull. Lincoln’s famousGettysburg Address contained only 267 words, of which 196 (73%) were onesyllablewords. The second general aspect of style in A is organization. Of course, all types ofwriting are “organized”; however, A is rigidly organized, and each A isorganized in the same way. 1metaphor: R. A.
