The facility will includea 500-seat auditorium, swimming pool, restaurant,and bookstore. The current plan is to open the megamosque on September 11, 2011.Córdoba is the city in southern Spain conqueredby invading Muslims in the year 711. The Umayyadleader, Abd al-Rahman I, made Córdoba his capital in756 and built the Great Córdoba Mosque which stillstands. By the 10 th century, Córdoba was the largestcity in Europe and filled with palaces and mosques.The great mosque symbolized the Muslim conquest ofAndalusia.Not surprisingly, the group named 9/11 Familiesfor a Safe & Strong America called the mosque “a grossinsult to the memory of those who were killed on thatterrible day.” Saudi and Egyptian terrorists committedmass murder of 2,700 Americans for the greater gloryof Allah at Ground Zero.Politicians like the mega mosque. It will generateseveral hundred jobs in lower Manhattan. New YorkCity Mayor Michael Bloomberg strongly supports it.So does Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.Proponents of the Ground Zero mosque wrote aneditorial in the Washington Post and said, “CordobaHouse is poised to become a gathering place for theenemies of militant Muslims: mainstream Muslims.”Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, head of the Córdoba Institute,insists the Ground Zero mosque will “bridge the greatdivide” between Muslims and the rest of America. “Weare Americans, we are Muslim Americans,” Rauf saidat a Manhattan community forum in which angry NewYorkers held up pictures of their loved ones murderedin the Twin Towers on 9/11.Rauf was interviewed by the CBS news magazine,“Sixty Minutes” on September 30, 2001, two weeksafter 9/11. He blamed this country: “United Statespolicies were an accessory to the crime that happened,”he said.This explains why mainstream Muslim leadersadamantly oppose the mosque. Among them is Phoenixcardiologist, Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, a Syrian immigrantand retired Navy commander who heads the liberalAmerican Islamic Forum for Democracy founded after9/11 to give voice to mainstream Muslims who embracethe Constitution, freedom, and separation of mosqueand state. Jasser leads the fight to expose the networkof Muslim Brotherhood front groups and mosques inthe U.S. He narrated the film, The Third Jihad, aboutthe threat of radical Islam to the West.Jasser told the Boston Globe Ground Zero shouldnot be the place to promote Islam. “It’s the place wherewar was declared on us as Americans,” he said.Prof. Stephen Suleyman Schwartz is a Muslimscholar, voice for anti-Islamist mainstream Muslims,and director of the liberal Center for Islamic Pluralismin Washington, D.C. Like Jasser, he is adamantlyopposed to the Ground Zero mosque, and for the samereasons.Radical Islam is not a religion as Americans understandthe term. It is a political doctrine of triumphalisthatred.Radical Muslims respond with hair-trigger sensitivityto any criticism of Islam. When the Danishnewspaper, Jyllands-Posten, published twelve politicalcartoons of Mohammed in September 2005,Arab governments filed protests, and in some cases,temporarily withdrew their ambassadors. The Danesreminded the Arabs that Denmark is a democracy; thegovernment had no power to censor newspapers.The cartoons sparked worldwide riots after a smallNorwegian Christian paper called Magazinet reprintedthem on January 10, 2006. Outraged Muslims burnedthe Danish and Norwegian embassies in Damascusto the ground; stormed the Italian consulate inLibya’s second city, Benghazi; firebombed the Danish,French, and Austrian embassies in Tehran; and burnedAmerican, French, German, Danish, and Israeli flags inMuslim capitals around the world; etc.Ultimately, hundreds of people died on three continents.Cowed by the killings, few American papersre-published the cartoons.Radical Muslims hate freedom; they seek theextermination of all Jews and destruction of all liberaldemocracies. Muslim-dominated governments prosecuteblasphemy, and pressured the U.N. to adoptanti-blasphemy laws after the cartoon jihad.Islamists speak in one voice to fellow Muslims, andthe opposite voice when addressing the West. YasserArafat was a chief practitioner of this deceit called taqiyyahin Arabic. He would exhort crowds to murderousjihad in Arabic in the morning, and release statementsin English about his desire for peace with Israel in theafternoon. Likewise, Osama bin Laden, mass murdererof 3,000 Americans, shows one face to Americans andanother to Muslims. He tells Americans his only beef istheir presence in Arabia; he tells his al-Qaeda followerstheir mission is to destroy America.The Ground Zero mosque will sit atop bin Laden’scarnage. Yet, its proponents insist it is a symbol of peace.They point to its name, Córdoba, to invoke the era ofalleged Islamic liberalism when Jews and Christiansthrived under Muslim rule.Eight centuries ago, the fanatical Almohids wereravaging Córdoba. Jews and Christians were freealright – to convert to Islam or face exile or death. BinLaden’s acolytes see themselves as modern inheritors ofthe Almohid ideology.The Great Córdoba Mosque was built on aChristian church. In Jerusalem, the al-Aqsa mosqueand al-Omar shrine are built on top of the Templeof Solomon. The Umayyad mosque in Damascus wasbuilt on top of the Church of St. John the Baptist.The Hagia Sophia church in Turkey was turned intoa mosque after Muslims conquered Constantinople.Throughout history, Muslims built mosques on sacredground to symbolize Islamic conquest over infidelChristians and Jews.To the Islamists, Córdoba is not a symbol of peaceand interfaith dialogue; it is a symbol of Middle Easternconquest in the West. It is hard to imagine a morepregnant symbol of Koran verse 9:111 which promotessuicidal jihad to “kill and be killed” than Ground Zero.Some scholars think bin Laden picked 9/11 based onthat verse.The Japanese never built a Shinto shrine at PearlHarbor after WWII; the Germans never built aGerman cultural center at Buchenwald or Mauthausen.Naïve politicians never bother to ask why the Egyptianand Saudi money men behind the Córdoba Instituteare so intent on building a mosque on the ashes of theTwin Towers.Islamists have declared jihad on America. TheGround Zero mosque controversy symbolizes thelarger conundrum facing Americans fighting this war:whether the tolerant should tolerate the intolerant. Asauthor Lee Harris points out in his book, Civilizationand Its Enemies, civilization requires tolerance and ahatred of violence. Hence, radical Islam is the enemyof civilization. Western nations, led by intellectualssteeped in democratic humanism, have a difficult timeaccepting this. “The ultimate irony of the intellectual,”says Harris, “is that he becomes an enemy of civilizationby refusing to accept the idea that civilization canhave an enemy.”When Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejadshouts “death to America” to cheering crowds in Tehran,he is not engaged in bravado, but instead, expressing agenuine goal which Iran hopes to achieve via nucleararms.Córdoba overthrew Muslim domination after 700years of occupation. When partial birth abortionarrived, the New York Times refused topublish illustrations of it or advertisementsby anti-abortion groups againstit. I realized the public was being propagandized.In terms of killings, abortionhas killed 4,400 children every day since1973.Continued from page 3Having exhausted his federal argumentsin state court, he returned tofederal court and filed a second habeaspetition. That, too, was denied, only thistime, the court said he was procedurallybarred. A real Catch 22. He appealedthat decision to U.S. Court of Appealsin Manhattan, but struck out again.In its decision, the federal appealscourt noted “it was three against one”when Campbell was forced to theground and then “beaten repeatedly andseverely” by DiGuglielmo, his fatherand brother-in-law. Iwatched Eclipse repeatedly to makeup for those in denial. I often woke upthinking about mangled, broken, unbornchildren. Butthe zero tolerance for any anti-abortionview is broad based, and reveals thepolitically correct nature of the psychiatriccommunity. Psychiatry is political.For example, the AmericanPsychiatric Association refuses toacknowledge women’s Post-abortionSyndrome. Yet, it was not until a decadeafter the Vietnam War that psychiatristsacknowledged post-traumatic stressdisorder in combat veterans.A young, female therapist at St.Vincent’s Psychiatric Hospital inHarrison got upset when I expressedgrief over abortion. She said I wascompletely out of order to “get political.”She threatened to throw me out if IContinued on page 23County for wrongful death.The shooting was re-tried beforea Manhattan federal jury from April 9to 26, 2000. That jury found in favor ofCampbell’s estate and awarded a $4.8million in damages: $2,297,040 againstDiGuglielmo; $675,600 against hisfather; $67,560 against his brother-inlaw,Robert Errico; $360,320 against thedeli corporation; and $1,080,960 againstthe real estate company which ownedthe deli premises and parking lot whereCampbell was shot.In one respect, DiGuglielmo’s casemirrors the O.J. Simpson case. Simpsonwas acquitted of murdering his ex-wifeand her friend, Ron Goldman, in anL.A. criminal court, but convictedof these acts in civil court. Page 6 The Westchester Guardian Thursday, JUly 1, 2010Health MatteRSJane Watson, M.B., B.S., M.D.The Underestimated Killer – GetAbdominal Aortic AneurysmTestedfor FreeAbdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)is an underestimated, often undetectedcondition that took the lives of JoeDiMaggio and Albert Einstein in thedays before effective treatment wasavailable.Irvington resident and decoratedwar hero, Ralph Goldsmith,(see “Westchester’s Finest,” p. 24) wasluckier. He is in excellent health sevenyears after his aneurysm repair at NewYork University Hospital. His messageto men over fifty-five: “Get screened. It’spainless and quick.”About 5% of American men willdevelop an AAA after the age of fiftyfive.It is five times more common inmen than women, and is 3.5 timesmore common in Caucasian males thanAfrican American males.Aneurysms occur when a bloodvessel wall becomes weakened andballoons outward under blood flowpressure. The aorta is the main arterycarrying oxygen-enriched blood fromthe heart to the rest of the body. Forreasons not yet known, elastin andcollagen, the elastic proteins, sometimesdegenerate in the abdominal section ofthe aorta, causing an aneurysm.The danger of an AAA is that it mayrupture. This leads to death in 80-90% ofcases. AAA is the 13th leading cause ofdeath in the Unites States. Risk factorsinclude smoking, high blood pressureand a family history of aneurysm.Occasionally, sufferers may feelsharp abdominal pain, back pain,shortness of breath or lightheadednessif the aneurysm has a smallleak. More often, there are no symptomsuntil the aneurysm ruptures.Most AAAs (68%) are detectedincidentally based on CT, MRI,or Ultrasound obtained for otherreasons. Others (32%) are detectedon routine physical examinationwhen a physician feels a pulsatingmass in the abdomen.Vascular surgeons follow anAAA with regular ultrasound tests.If the AAA gets bigger than fivecentimeters in diameter, the risk ofrupture rises rapidly. Above sevencentimeters, the risk of rupturebecomes very high.The aim of detection is to fix anAAA surgically before it ruptures. Thetiming of elective surgery depends onthe general health of the patient and therate at which the aneurysm is expanding.Surgery has improved dramaticallyover the last sixty years. In the 1920s,aortic procedures were universally fatal.Albert Einstein’s AAA was discoveredin 1948 when he complained of occasionalpains in the abdomen. In 1949 atthe age sixty-nine, Einstein underwent anew procedure coating his aorta in polyethenecellophane which is irritating tohuman tissue. This cellophane inducedintense inflammation around the aneurysm,causing formation of rigid, fibroustissue to prevent rupture.Einstein had a prognosis of onlya few months without treatment. Hesurvived five more years until his aneurysmslowly leaked again and he diedafter refusing further help. He said, “Iwant to go when I want. It is tastelessto prolong life artificially. I have donemy share, it is time to go. I will do itelegantly.”These days, Einstein would haveseveral surgical options to repair hisaneurysm. In an “open” procedure,the surgeon makes an incisionin the abdominal wall andreplaces the damaged section ofthe aorta with a tube made ofsynthetic Dacron or Gore-Tex.Lately, surgeons haveemployed a new techniquecalled endovascular aneurysmrepair (EVA) to fix the aneurysmfrom within. Two smallgroin incisions are made and a“graft tube” is threaded up a legartery into the aorta. The graftis held in position by stentssimilar to those used to openblockages in coronary arteries.The graft pushes against theaorta wall and diverts blood flowthrough the graft, excluding theaneurysm.An EVA avoids an incision in theabdomen, allowing patients to recoverfaster. The majority can return home in24-48 hours after surgery. In contrast,an open repair using abdominal incisionrequires longer hospitalization andpatients recover more slowly.In some cases, EVA can be donewithout general anesthesia. Weasel.These are what we call a person whoreports others to the authorities.We are expected to rat out the worstof the worst: assassins; al-Qaeda spies;child molesters. “See something, saysomething.”But when someone is minding hisown business and yet, breaking rules --like driving 60 in a 55 mph zone -- wegenerally leave Big Brother out of it.In a free society, we live and let live.People are animals wrapped in a fragilefabric of civilization. Society runs ontrust. Snitch too much, and trust isundermined. The fabric of civilizationis ripped.What are the consequences of lawsthat force some members of society tobetray others?SB 1070, the Arizona law thatpurports to regulate immigration -- bylaw, an exclusively federal concern, likeforeign policy and the coinage of money-- declares that, if you knowingly orrecklessly even attempt to “transportor move ... conceal, harbor, or shield”a foreign person whom the State ofArizona decides was “illegal” underfederal immigrations laws, you are guiltyof a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable bya fine of at least $1,000. And the statecan seize your car, too.The law’s intent is to root out evildoersin our midst. But the method doesnot match the goal. For starters, being“illegal” has nothing to do with evil. TheFBI reports that, in the past few yearswhen more people crossed over theborder from Mexico, violent crimein Arizona went down.Another problem is determiningwho is “illegal.” Canadianvisitors are not issued an immigrationdocument proving theirimmigration status. Drivers fromstates like New Mexico get licenseswithout regard to immigration statusbecause public safety requires all driversto have ID and insurance. Lots of folkswho grew up here look, sound and thinkAmerican, but have no papers to proveit.Even immigration authorities havedifficulty ascertaining who is “illegal.”Imagine how hard it is for laymen. SoSB 1070, if not tossed out by the federalcourts, will shred our fragile social fabric.Start with those we rightly respectmost: doctors. Doctors are bound by theHippocratic Oath. As Hippocrates said,primum non nocere, “first, do no harm.”In the modern version of the oath,a doctor swears to “respect the privacyof my patients, for their problems arenot disclosed to me that the world mayknow....”Beginning July 29 th , SB 1070requires all Arizona doctors to squeal ontheir patients lest the doctor be guiltyof “concealing” or “harboring” a bannedforeigner. If the doctor fails to rat outthe patient, he or she faces a stiff fineof at least $1,000 per incident. If thedoctor contests the charge of failing tobe a stoolie, there will be hefty legal feesand lost income going to court.Federal law already criminalizesthe harboring and transport of peoplelacking valid immigration status.This law is aimed at smugglers; it isnot enforced against doctors, nurses,lawyers, nuns and community membersengaged in the helping professions.Federal law does not empowernosy, aggressive citizens to punish officialswho use discretion in immigrationenforcement. In contrast, if an Arizonaofficial declines to arrest or prosecutea pastor for giving a foreigner a lift tocourt, any local fanatic can force thestate to punish both pastor and theofficial.How poisonous is this enlistment ofcitizens to snitch on others? Considerour own history: the Red Scare of 1917-20, and McCarthyism of 1947-57, with“Communist sympathizer” blacklistsand people “naming names” to investigators,the ruined careers and shatteredlives. The tumult over the award givento McCarthy-era squealer, Elia Kazan,at the 1999 Oscar ceremonies showshow raw the suffering was more thanhalf a century later.Or we can aim lower and examinethe Stasi, the East German secret policewhich operated from 1950-1990. Morethan one in seven East Germans was aStasi informer. Children informed onparents. Parents informed on children.Friends betrayed friends. Each apartmentbuilding and major factory hadofficial spies. Video cameras monitoredhotel rooms and apartments throughtiny holes drilled in walls. In the spiritof Arizona’s SB 1070, spies reportedeveryone who was an overnight guestin another’s home. My favoriteepisode is The Midnight Sun (1961).Characters Norma (Lois Nettleton) andMrs. Bronson (Betty Garde) are the onlypeople left in an apartment building as amajor planetary disaster looms. Radionews reports the sun is on an irreversiblecollision course with Earth.The stifling heat rises and Loiscollapses with exhaustion. In a flash,she wakes up. Mrs. Bronson is hoveringover her, patting her forehead with acold cloth. Lois shivers with fever as afierce blizzard rages outside the window.It was all a dream. In reality, the earth isslowly moving away from the sun andthe planet will soon freeze to death.President Obama and the left --hell bent on carbon taxing everythingfrom industry to cow farts -- push thewarming theory for ideological andfinancial gain. Like The Midnight Sunepisode, theirs is a dream world in whichthey believe the earth is warming when,in fact, it is actually cooling. Globalwarming will go down in history as oneof the great scientific frauds of our time.In November 2009, global warmingskeptics had a boost. Files and E-mailsleaked from the University of EastAnglia, a world center for pollution andclimate studies, revealed global warmingadvocates cooked the data on climatechange.Different regions of the world havenormal cooling and warming trends.The planet as a whole has experiencedcooling and warming trends well beforeinvention of fossil fuels. It may be due tovariations in solar radiation. Men oncefarmed areas of Greenland now coveredby glaciers. A few years ago, Danishscientists studied Greenland’s ice core.It showed the earth naturally coolsand warms every two thousand years.Mother Earth has had hot flashes longbefore man walked the earth. Whethershe cools or warms, there is nothinghumans can do about it.It came as no surprise that Mr.Obama used his Oval Office address topromote dangerous cap-and-trade legislation.First, Mr. Obama acted like theprofessor again, lecturing the public onhow the spill happened, as if we wereall wearing cone hats in his classroomand never read the newspapers. Next, hepresented his revisionist account on howdeftly his administration managed thespill (see Guardian June 24 th , p. 8).Every American president, fromRichard Nixon to Barack Obama,promised alternative energy and an endto our dependence on foreign oil. Thefederal government has subsidized therenewable solar and wind industries forthe past thirty years. Nothing substantialhas come from it. We must rely onoil for generations to come.Renewable solar and wind energy isTwelfth Century technology. Americarelied on it before the IndustrialRevolution. We moved away from itbecause it costs more than fossil fuels.Solar and wind infrastructure demandsvast amounts of land and cuts intonatural habitats.The terms “renewable,” “green,”and “reform” sound good on paper,but say nothing about how we harnessand deliver this type of energy to theconsumer. Mr. Obama does not know.In his address, he claimed our children’sfuture was at stake and we must act now“even if we’re unsure exactly what thatlooks like. Even if we don’t yet knowprecisely how to get there, we knowwe’ll get there.”Sounds like the song and dance forhealth insurance reform legislation. Wedo not know what it will look like, howmany people will be affected, how muchit will cost, but trust me (wink-wink anda nod), we will get there and it will begreat!If the neo-Monarchs running thenation really want to develop alternateenergy, they should get serious aboutnatural gas. Alaska has one thousandtrillion cubic feet of it. Gas is a safeand clean form of energy ignored in theenergy debate.Alaska also has oil reserves well overone hundred billion barrels. Radicalenvironmentalists prevent us fromtapping Alaskan oil and gas. They insistthe ecology of the North Slope will bedisrupted. Nothing could be furtherfrom the truth. The Alaskan land richfor drilling is essentially deserted tundrawith little wildlife. Environmentalistswho stand in the way of recoveringthis energy are the same interlopers weshould blame for the out-of-controlspill in the Gulf. The first evidence of archery wasfound in Hamburg, Germany, around10,000 B.C.E. Early bows were madeof pine and arrows had flint points.Archers hunted game with bow andarrow. Over time, it became a sport inEngland, Egypt, India, and many Asiancountries, and was associated with highsocial status.The development of early firearmseclipsed archery which became all butobsolete. Guns required less training,and although slower to operate thana bow and arrow, were more usefulin combat, as lead projectiles couldpenetrate armor better than arrows.However, during the 18 th century, theEnglish gentry took an interest in manythings medieval and revived the sport ofarchery.Today, the sport is growing rapidly.Archery competitions are especiallypopular among many historical societieslike the popular Society for CreativeAnachronism dedicated to medievalhistory.Bow hunting is popular again. It isthe only type of hunting legally allowedin upper Westchester.Archery in Westchester received ashot in the arm when Extreme Archeryopened recently in Mamaroneck. Thestore features a wide range of equipment,including modern and traditional bows,arm and finger guards, gloves, targets,hunting supplies, and even deodorizersto cover a hunter’s scent. Prices for bowsrange from $20 for a kid’s bow to $1,600for complex compound bows.Archers must be at least 500 feetaway from any residence to legallytarget shoot in Westchester. This oftenmakes it hard to find a place to practice.To remedy the lack of shooting space,Extreme Archery installed an indoorrange with ten and twenty-yard targets.Cost is $15 per hour for adults and $10for kids. The exhibitshowcased contemporary artin New Rochelle displayedon four floors of over eightthousand square feet atthe Knickerbocker Lotson Webster Avenue. Theexhibition included worksranging from painting,sculpture, installation, graffiti,photographs, and video.The remarkable works of fourteenartists were on display, along withtheir hearts and souls. Among themwas Frenchman and internationallyrecognized artist, Patrick Bancel, whopresented his collection, “Billboards,”a combination of photography andpainting. These unique works addressglobal warming and climate change in acontemporary way. Bancel’s art has beenexhibited in France, all over the UnitedStates, and is found in private collectionsin over twenty-four countries.Local artist, Michael Cuomo,presented a collection of oil on canvaspaintings. His art develops in stages,starting as pencil drawings on whitepaper, and ending as layered, abstractbeauties. He was the recipient of theBronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO)award grant this year. Cuomo recentlyacquired studio space in the new YoHobuilding in Yonkers (Guardian, April29 th , pp. 14-15).Ecuadorian artist and Queensnative, Vincent Zambrano, displayeda series of photographs, paintings andeven two short videos. His first film,“La Arana,” was accepted into the HBOInternational New York Film Festivalin 2002, and in 2006, his film “TheHeart of a Broken Tale,” was acceptedat Cannes, the pre-eminent film festivalin the world. Zambrano’s films are selfdirected,produced, created, and funded.True New Yorker, born in Queens andraised in Washington Heights, knownby his nom d’arte, “SUEWORKS,” isa self-taught graphic designer, artist,and illustrator. He has many prominentcommercial clients such as Viacomand VH1 and has exhibited in Tel Aviv,Virginia, New York, and Miami. For theKnickerbocker show, he painted a wallon site with stunning graffiti.Originally trained as a painter, artistCharles McGill presented a collection offound objects such as golf bags collagedto stand as a fascinating and attractivearray of works expressing social satireand politics.New York native, Ivar Hyden,opened his first shop designing andcreating custom furniture in UnionSquare in 1970. He needed more spaceand moved his shop to Mount Vernon,and in 1986, moved his Jamaica,Queens, metal casting business to NewRochelle. Goldsmith was amember of the First Artillery Division’sfirst wave. Today, he is the last knownsurvivor of that landing.Goldsmith disembarked hisamphibious landing craft at 6:30 A.M.and suffered a deep facial wound fromheavy German artillery bombardment aminute later.Goldsmith remembers zig-zaggingacross the two hundred yards of beachas men fell all around him. He made itto a steep sand embankment and foundhimself crouching behind a sand dune afew feet from Nazi troops. Surveying thebeach, he was appalled to see that “justeveryone was dead, friends, comrades,strangers, all dead.” He looked backat his landing craft and saw the driverlying dead, too.Goldsmith discovered five otherseverely wounded soldiers behind theembankment. None of them couldmove. They had abandoned their heavymachine guns as they ran across thebeach. Their pistols were soaked withsea water.The Americans lay defenseless,mostly in silence, afraid of beingdetected by German troops a few feetaway. They were appalled by Goldsmith’sface covered in blood. One G.I. offeredGoldsmith a piece of chocolate. Hesuddenly realized he could not open hiswounded mouth to chew. He later hadsurgical grafts to fix his tattered face.The First Artillery Division’s horrificlosses caused American commanders todivert further troop waves away fromthis section of the beach. That meant noreinforcements were coming to rescueGoldsmith and the G.I.s trapped withhim.Goldsmith did what he could totend to the wounded. As evening fell,so did the temperature. The men wereweak from loss of blood and began toshiver. They were not going to make itthrough the night.the tides had swept awaythe carnage, leaving thebeach pristine again.At 7:00 A.M. on June7 th , Goldsmith saw a smallpatrol boat with two soldiersbringing ammunition stores tothe beach. He exposed himself toGerman gunfire a second time, ranto the men and warnedthem to get off the beachimmediately. He hitched aride on the fast boat, and feltsure the Germans were “playingwith me” by not shooting him.They held fire until the boat was300 yards from shore and able to escape.The boat returned to the battleshipU.S.S. Frankford where Goldsmithwas confronted by “Three hundredguys pointing pistols atme.” The Navy was toldeveryone on his section ofOmaha beach was dead.They were suspiciousbecause they saw twomen went out, but threereturned.Goldsmith was takento the Captain and toldhim to save the remainingtroops shivering in blankets.He described theGerman artillery positionsbehind the beach,and the Frankford usedCaption: Goldsmith D-Day refused landing to watch Omaha them Beach his description to shell the area effectively.The other men were then rescued.suffer. Goldsmith worried theirfamilies would receive the dreaded MIA(Missing in Action) telegram, not theKIA (Killed in Action) because theirbodies were lost at sea. By the next day,Operation Overlord, the D-Dayinvasion of Europe, established a footholdin Normandy, but it took severalweeks. The heaviest loss of life tookplace that tragic first day of amphibiouslandings. An estimated 2,200 U.S.servicemen died on Omaha Beach.The reasons are still a matter of debate.Some military historians say inaccurateair and naval bombardment failed todrive back German forces behind thebeaches. Allied intelligence had a rarelapse, too. It placed the German 352 ndInfantry Division twentymiles north of the invasionsite. In fact, a large force ofthe 352 nd was camped justbehind the dunes at OmahaBeach.Goldsmith was evacuated to anEnglish hospital and elated to see hisinjured beach mates there.He never learned their eventualfate, however, becausehe was discharged a monthlater and returned to his unit.He went to Europe againto fight at Aachen, Cologneand other intense battles. Hewas wounded a second time but says,“Nothing touched the horror of D-Day.”The Army awarded him the prestigiousBronze Star for his “heroic and meritoriousservice” at Omaha Beach.In May 1945, Goldsmith demobilizedand returned to his childhoodsweetheart in the Bronx. The twomarried and moved to Westchesterwhere they have lived for forty-six years,the last twenty in Irvington.His wife, Ruth, says one of hisstrengths is his ability to mentally adaptand move on. One week after returningto the Bronx, he was back at work inthe office supply business “as if the warnever happened.”Goldsmith is also modest. TheGuardian asked to photograph hismedal. He replied, “Why would I keepit? I gave it to my grandson, he collectsthat stuff.”The Goldsmiths have two children,a son who is Executive Directorat Summit Children’s Residence Centerin Nyack, and a daughter who worksas a personal trainer. The whole familylives in Irvington and the Goldsmith’sfour grandchildren went through theIrvington school system. A great grandchildrecently enlarged the family.The Guardian salutes this WWIIhero, the last survivor of that terrible dayon Omaha Beach.
