Message from the ChairmanCanon Inc. celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2007. The company wasfounded by a group of young men pursuing their dream of creating ahigh-grade camera equal in quality to those produced by Leica, theindustry leader at the time. Since then, we have grown into an industryleader through the promotion of diversification and globalization. Ibelieve that we were able to realize this growth through our respect forhuman dignity based on Canon's "Three Selfs" spirit-self-motivation,self-management, and self-awareness-and a forward-looking outlookwith a keen understanding of the present.Amid the growing tides of globalization and increasing economicuncertainty, Japan faces mounting concerns regarding its future, including changes in its governing structure, an aging populationcoupled with a declining birthrate, and problems involving socialsecurity. On a global scale, as emerging countries continue to develop, the world faces many daunting problems that have never before beenexperienced, including a range of food and environmental crises. When considering Japan and the rest of the world, careful deliberationand analysis of the present is needed more than ever to ensure anaccurate forecast of events far into the future. With its establishment, I hope that the Canon Institute for GlobalStudies will play an active role in shaping the future of Japan and therest of the world by precisely plotting out future directions andvisions, disseminating information, providing roadmaps, and servingas a venue for outstanding human resources with the sophisticationand sensibility to substantively improve the world. We believe thatthrough such activities, we can promote further development in Japanand on a global scale, and thus contribute to the ongoing prosperityand well being of humankind.Toward the realization of these goals, the Canon Institute for GlobalStudies welcomes as its president Mr. Toshihiko Fukui, a man of vastknowledge and experience. With every confidence that the Canon Institute for Global Studies willcontribute meaningfully to the future development of Japan and therest of the world, we request your support and cooperation in ouractivities.Research areasMacroeconomicsConsidering the dynamic change of global economy which may result from today's global economic crisis, we are assuming thatexisting framework of macroeconomics will no longer be effective for accurate analysis and policy-making proposals. We willexplore a new economic theory that enables us to create an alternative framework of macroeconomics and to advance aneffective suggestion on policy-making.We will also make medium-term policy proposals for establishing a new economic and financial framework through our carefulforecast on trend after the crisis as well as our study about the measure to deal with current situation. Meanwhile, the frameworkof analyzing long-term institutional changes will be studied.Facing with various issues caused from the global economic crisis such as rising unemployment or difficulty in financing thesocial security systems, the effectiveness of present social safety net is being put to the test. We will work on systemsconcerning safety net as well.Resource, Energy and EnvironmentTo contend with global warming and the dwindling supplies of energy and resources, we plan the mid- to long-term energypolicies for Japan while proposing technological and strategic developments in the field of energy. All of our plans and proposalsreflect the actual possibilities of todays environmental and energy technologies. We also create development plans in arelatively new realm of activity, the ocean, to minimize the risks of energy, resource, and environmental crises in the future.Within Asia, we promote the exchange of opinions between Japanese and Chinese experts on environmental and energy issues,as well as physical distribution systems for marine and land transportation. With these systems, we seek to secure stable energysupplies and conserve the environment by establishing the right physical distribution systems, creating superb technologies, and applying smart policies for technological guidance.Foreign Affairs and National SecurityOur medium- and long-term goal is to train Japanese political appointee candidates (PACs) and to raise public awareness of theforeign and security policies that Japan should adopt. For this purpose, in our second fiscal year, we are embarking on initiatives to host policy simulations (wargaming) where thePACs will plan and implement foreign and security policies in virtual reality emergency situations. PACs are also expected toreview the games and offer policy proposals based on the findings of such policy simulations.Through these activities, we wish to contribute to Japan's policy making and implementation process in the field of foreign andsecurity affairs as well as to enhancing public support for such policies.Globalization must be one of the most important development of the present world, not just in economic but also social andpolitical areas. This Institute intends to deepen our understanding of such development and presently focus on the study of thenon-state actors such as NGOs, private companies and non-organized peoples of the world which are more and more closelyrelated, interact and possibly change the international relations, taking advantage of the development of informationtechnologies and communication methods.U.S. Information and NetworkWe will be collecting and providing information about U.S. policies and studies in the three domains currently defined as ourmain research areas. We will also be acting as a bridge between our researchers and American researchers including those atHarvard University with the aim of constructing human networks.Fujio MitaraiChairman and CEOCanon Inc.The Chinese economy and Japan-Sino-US relationsWe study whether the recovery and growth scenarios of the Chinese economy will actually work out and how these scenariosshould be incorporated into the growth scenarios of the Japanese economy. For these purpose, we closely monitor theeconomic indicators announced by the Chinese government while collecting on-the-spot information through the interviews inChina. We study the economic, political, and foreign dimensions of the relationships among Japan, China, and the US, andconsider the strategic direction of political, economic and foreign policies for Japan.
