Rights in Humanitarian Crises6

Advancing the HumanRight to Water in theUnited StatesA sapling growsEvery day in the United States, millions ofpeople on the margins don’t have accessto clean and affordable drinking water. When United Nations IndependentExpert on the Human Right to Waterand Sanitation Catarina de Albuquerquevisited the United States in February andMarch 2011, she met with people fromWashington, D.C., to Sacramento, Calif.,who offered startling insights into thesuffering of their communities. At the conclusion of her 11-day mission, for which UUSC provided key logisticalsupport, she spoke to the public: “Thecountry has to make greater efforts touse the available money to focus onthose who are in greatest need and alsothink about new solutions. . . . It has todo with policy making, with strategizing, with having a holistic picture of thesector and having proper policies toaddress the outstanding challenges, rather than merely a question of money.”As an integral player in the expert’svisit, UUSC was determined to moveconversation about the human rightto water forward right here in theUnited States. De Albuquerque’s initialrecommendations — that the UnitedStates address discrimination in wateraccess in its own communities anddevelop affordable and sustainablesolutions — set important precedentthat will shape and fuel work to makethe human right to water a reality.UUSC was well positioned to assistwith de Albuquerque’s visit, whichset the stage for a revival of essentiallegislative work on the issue in California.Several years ago in that state, UUSCbegan partnering with the UnitarianUniversalist Legislative Ministry ofCalifornia (UULMCA) to turn the humanright to water into law. While effortswere dashed the first time around, the movement did not give up. As deAlbuquerque’s visit wrapped up, UUSC’spublic policy and mobilization teamgeared up to support a package of sixbills on the human right to water thatwas introduced in the state legislature.Together with the UULMCA, UUSCasked people across California to takeaction, and they responded with vigor.Writing, calling, and e-mailing theirrepresentatives in support of the newhuman-right-to-water bills, UUs andhuman-rights advocates spoke up —and continue to speak up, demandingthat water justice be served. UUSC’s GotWater campaign has furnished activistswith a host of materials and resources tohelp educate and engage their friends, families, congregations, and communities. The collaborative effects succeeded inpassing four of the six human-rightto-waterbills. The dedicated work of abroad coalition has significantly grownthe movement for the human rightto water. And it’s a movement thatneeds all the strength it can get. “Whilebillions of dollars have been spent onwater projects in California, we havestill much work to do to make sure thateveryone has access to clean water todrink,” emphasized Rev. Lindi Ramsden,UULMCA’s executive director. With yourhelp, UUSC is determined to make thathappen.UUSC Justice Sunday 2012 celebrates and encourages action on the human right to water in theUnited States and internationally — see Justice Sunday materials at uusc.org/justicesunday.7

Supporting DemocraticProcesses in EgyptA tree bears fruitIn 2009, partnering with the HandsAcross the Mideast Support Alliance(HAMSA), UUSC began working withDalia Ziada, head of the HAMSACairo office, to help sow the seedsof nonviolent activism. Innovativestrategies emerged, from distributingcomic books to training online activistsin real-world organizing. Two years later,as revolution began to sweep the MiddleEast in early 2011, UUSC continuedsupporting the rights of the Egyptianpeople and the next steps in their questfor political freedom. When UUSC helped facilitate thecreation of an Arabic version of TheMontgomery Story, a 1958 comic bookabout the U.S. civil-rights movement, ithad no idea that one day copies wouldbe circulating in Cairo’s Tahrir Squareas nonviolent protesters brought downthe Mubarak regime. Ziada says, “I amso proud to say that our little comicbook about Martin Luther King, Jr., andthe Montgomery story — which wecooperated with UUSC a couple of yearsago to translate into Arabic, publish, anddistribute all over the Middle East — hasbeen credited now for being the reasonfor inspiring so many young peopleall over the region about adoptingnonviolent actions and techniques intheir work.”While the comic-book project wasunder way, UUSC was also workingwith HAMSA to bring together youthactivists from across the Middle East. Ina training in Morocco led by UUSC andpartners, young advocates of religiousand political freedom met to sharetheir expertise and learn new skills forplanning events, launching campaigns, and securing funding. The workshopsemphasized how to translate onlineactivism into on-the-ground organizingand leadership skills.Such skills were front and center inFebruary 2011 as nonviolent protesterstook to the streets of Egypt and refusedto back down from their demands fortrue democracy and their full measureof human rights. Following the ousterof Hosni Mubarak, HAMSA movedquickly to transition from active protestto active civic education. Because mostEgyptians, particularly youth, do nothave experience participating in free, open democracy, widespread populareducation is needed to ensure that thetransition from autocracy to democracyis successful.UUSC is working with Ziada toengage young activists to educatetheir community on voting rights, democracy, the Egyptian constitution, and election monitoring. The membersare successfully training thousands ofcitizens, and the campaign — calledFahem Haqi (or “I know my rights”)— was named the number-one civiceducationcampaign in all of Egypt byEgyptian local television.Building on the legacy of UnitarianUniversalists who were active in the U.S.civil-rights movement, UUSC membersand supporters are providing essentialassistance to the young activists inEgypt. As Nasser Weddady, director ofoutreach for HAMSA in the United States, told UUSC, “This is their own civil-rightsmovement.” UUSC is proud to stand insolidarity and will continue to explorenew ways to strengthen their efforts.Hear directly from Dalia Ziada about her work in Egypt in partnership with UUSC atuusc.org/daliavideo and read The Montgomery Story at uusc.org/montgomerycomic.9

Promoting Fair Tradeat Home and AbroadA canopy encouragesnew growthWhen small farmers are paid a fairprice for their products, they can affordto pay for the basic needs of theirfamilies, invest in the well-being of theircommunities, and ensure the long-termgrowth of their businesses. In the pastyear, hundreds of UU congregationshave shown their commitment to theseideals by purchasing a total of 39 tons offairly traded coffee, tea, chocolate, andother products from Equal Exchangethrough the UUSC Coffee Project. That’sa lot of tasty treats — but it’s so muchmore than that, too. The ripple effects ofthis dedication are felt around the world,as Equal Exchange contributes a portionof the proceeds from the Coffee Projectback to the UUSC Small Farmer Fund, which builds long-term partnershipswith small farmer and producer groupsworking on human rights and socialjustice around the world. In Bungoma, Kenya, a town just 20miles from the border of Uganda, UUSCis partnering with Muungano (theKiswahili word for “togetherness”), anorganization that provides livelihoodsfor youth while connecting them totraditional agriculture. Young people inBungoma face great challenges. Manylose their parents to HIV/AIDS andbecome sole heads-of-household —and it’s increasingly difficult for themto find safe work to provide for theirfamilies. The town’s proximity to theborder renders these young peoplevulnerable to prostitution, trafficking, early marriage, risky forms of work, andother exploitation. With the help of the UUSC Small FarmerFund, Muungano started a seed projectthat trains youth to run their owncatering businesses, which provide foodfor local events like weddings. They alsorent land to grow organic, traditionalcrops, which they use to preparenutritious and affordable meals forpeople with HIV/AIDS (supporting theeffectiveness of their medication), andeducate the community about the risksof genetically modified foods. This important project grew out ofthe fruits of the UUSC Coffee Project, which began in 2001 and has becomea solid long-term success thanks to thehundreds of congregations that takepart. More than 600 UU congregationsnow participate in the UUSC CoffeeProject. And UUs have the highestparticipation rate of any denominationin Equal Exchange’s Interfaith Program. The Coffee Project has also led toengagement in other fair-tradeprograms like the Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign, which calls attentionto abusive child-labor conditionsamong cocoa suppliers that sustain theglobal chocolate industry. The messageof these programs is that fair trademore equitably distributes wealth andprovides farmers and workers with aliving wage. This is why supporting fairtrade is central to UUSC’s commitment tostrengthening workers’ rights as humanrights in today’s global economy.Find out more about the UUSC Coffee Project and get involvedtoday at uusc.org/coffeeproject.11
