Although thistends to work best during pre-rutsituations, it can provide resultsright through the rut as bucks travelin search of receptive does andwork scrapes along the way.Scrapes vs. RubsThe first consideration is ofcourse whether or not your huntingarea holds any sizable bucksto begin w ith.By sizable we donʼtmean large antlers. Simply put wemean anything you would shootthat meets your own standards accordingto your own personal codeof ethics. For some a forkhorn is atrue trophy. For others nothing lessthan a record book is suitable. Youhunt according to your ability andthe deer in your hunting area harvestingthose which you considerCorner of Rt. 5 & 53Elizabeth, WV304-275-3574sizable or suitable for shooting.Scrapes will work on all deerbut predominantly work better onlarger Closeouts class older On deer that havelaid 1999 claim Models to one particular area. Ascrape is considered a calling cardmuch like a rub on a tree but is abit more in-depth once you take acloser look. When a buck worksthe ground he is leaving a visualsign that he considers this area his, much like a rub. You also find thatthey leave their scent in the scrapeas they do when making a rub viatheir pre-orbital glands. So how doscrapes and rubs differ? For one itis seldom that rub will be workedagain later in the year. A certaintree may be rubbed in consecutiveyears but seldom is it ever workedagain during that same year. Not sowhen speaking in terms of scrapes.Although not all scrapes are reworked,a percentage of them arevisited throughout the season andfreshened when needed. You willalso find a licking branch above ascrape where the deer has chewedthe end of a small branch andworked his pre-orbital glands aswell as the glands found around histear ducts to leave an added scent. This is where scrapes and rubs differthe most besides the fact of revisitationon occasion.continue to the next pageHunt Safely This SeasonHunting 2006 ~ Page 4BOWTECHDIAMONDROSSBROWNINGBOW-LISTICARCHERY SHOPCOMPLETE BOW SERVICEBOW & HUNTING ACCESSORIESYOUTH BOWS•CUSTOM ARROWS15105 MacCorkle Av. Finding A ScrapeScouting and finding a scrapeor scrape line is a definite plus. Iwould much rather find a scrapeor two than a rubline. Many timesyou find that rubs were a relief forpent up aggression due to growingtestosterone in the buck while thescrapes are a definite sign that abuck likes what he has seen in thearea. Scrapes are normally found onhigher ground that is dry enough tohold scent and wont be washed outin the even it rains heavily. Areasthat repeatedly encounter boggy orswamp-like conditions hold lessscrapes than the edges of that samearea where the ground is slightlyelevated. If youfind the scrape has been freshenedupon returning you might wantto set up and have a look at whatclass of buck youʼre dealing with.Itʼs not unheard of for a smaller, orlarger, deer to come by and leavehis own stamp directly over anotherbucks scrape. Set up downwindof the scrape as most bucks wontapproach directly and prefer to usethe wind to check their scrape. The main objective here isnʼt somuch the visibility of any scrapebut the scent thatʼs containedwithin. If you objectively look at ascrape on the ground, it isnʼt goingto draw much attention visually, asa rub does. The secret to the scrapelies within the earth itself discernablemainly through scent. Thatʼshow you concentrate your effortswhen creating a mock scrape. The Mock ScrapeYouʼve found an active scrape buthunting the area has proved fruitless.Chances are that the buck ischecking them during hours ofdarkness. So how the heck do I lurethe buck out without alerting him? There are a number of ways totackle this situation. First you wantto make the buck believe that anotherbuck has taken over his area. You can do this by either workinghis active scrape or creating a mockscrape. Weʼlldiscuss that first. To create a mock scrape you needto be very careful about leavingany human scent. Rubber boots andgloves are not an option. They are anecessity! Begin with choosing anarea similar to the scrapes youʼvefound. Be sure there is a lickingbranch located roughly 40 inchesabove the area to be worked. Startout by working the ground with theheel of your boot to reveal somefresh dirt. Typically this would bedone is a somewhat circular or ovalpattern. This does not have to be ahole in the ground! Simply removingthe top layer of grasses or mosswill work fine. Because a buck urinatesin his scrape you will needsome scent. then walk away. Check the scrapeevery few days for activity. If youfind that a buck has come by andworked the mock scrape, freshen itand hang your stand. Chances areyou might get a look at the buck ifheʼs actively patrolling the area.Drive ʻEm WildTo really set a buck into a frenzyyou have a number of options buthereʼs my favorite. If youʼve doneany scouting throughout the yearchances are you have a few placesto set up and hunt from for variousweather conditions. Hopefullythose places also contain a highvolume of deer sign including somescrapes. If so, hers a extreme trickto really throw a dominant buckinto hyperdrive. In SearchOf Old LuresBy Galen AshThe celebration of National Huntingand Fishing days is history. The annual event held at StonewallJackson State Park was again a hugesuccess. With thousands of peopleattending the show again this year, everyone had a good time. Youcould say there’s something foreveryone, young and old. Dozensand dozens of vendors from all overthe state participate. You can lookat an endless supply of sportingequipment, rifles, shotguns, pistols, shells, bows, camouflage, archeryequipment, rods, reels, lures, huntingboots, hunting socks, mounteddeer and fish, etc., as well as manyother booths of interest. There are events all day long, suchas bow shoots, rifle shoots, pistolshoots, clay pigeon shoots, for youthand adults. People on hand showhow to fillet fish and skin deer (theykill a live one). You don’t have tolook very hard to find somethingto do.If you’ve never had the opportunityto attend, you need to makeplans now to go next September. It’salways the last full weekend. Finding Game Birds To HuntBy Ralph RussellIf you have your own bird dogs, you could have a hunt anywherewith friends and family. All youneed is to find some wild gamebirds. However, the chance offinding or even flushing a wild birdcan be difficult and time consumingat best. One of the best placesto hunt game birds is at a place thatspecializes in bird hunts ... a huntingpreserve. At a hunting preserve, you knowthere will be a lot of birds, as manyas you want to shoot. Birds at a huntingpreserve can be hard to tell apartfrom wild birds, if they are raisedin large flight pens and in isolation. The only difference in pen-raisedgame birds and wild birds is thatpen-raised game birds are raisedin a protective environment. Gamebirds are raised in large flight pensmade of wire mesh, with bird nettingon the top. The sides are sixfeettall and thereʼs an electric wirearound the bottom of the pen, tokeep predators out. Unfortunatelydue to the snow, we encounteredlittle activity (only one set of cowelk tracks and three doe mule deerventured out while it snowed)therefore we decided on an earlylunch to wait out the storm. Finallyat about 2pm we could seethe clouds breaking and we headedback up the mountain which adreceived 8”to12” of snow. As werode along the top at about 9000ʼwe spotted a large bull about 400yards away. We immediately exitedthe truck and ran back to some aspenshalfway towards the bull. He said that the allof the elk were only 10 yards awayfrom his hiding spot and for thelongest time he just laid down outof site.
