Year 9 Aim Higher Keele University VisitThe people who went to Keele University were:Olivia ClarkeKate EdgerHannah LockettSophie WilliamsonNikky PaulMichelle RobertEva RodrigoKatrina HopleyAnd the teachers who came with uswere:Miss Hewitt & Miss TickleAccommodation All nine of us were allocated a room to ourselves. Our roomsconsisted of a bed, a desk, a sink, a wardrobe and a mirror. It was simple andminimalistic, however it catered to our needs and we were able to sleep well andwe did not have any complaints.Activities We did many activities such as:•Forensic Science – We learned about the different types of fingerprints and sawwhat ours looked like.•Earthquakes and Tsunamis – We learned how tsunamis and earthquakes occursand how we can prepare for them.•Team Building- We worked with other schools and built a protective shell withstraws and tape for an egg. Then we did a quiz together.•Mathematical Trickery - We learned some magic which was connected to maths.•High Schools in America – We understood that there were many differencesbetween schools in UK and America.•Sports – We played various games e.g.. rounders, tennis and stuck-in-the-mud.•Disco – It was a great opportunity to socialize and we had a great time.•Ghost Tour- At about 10.30pm, we went ghost touring. It was really scary!EvaluationOur trip was a insightful trip. We experienced university to a certain extent. We went to lectures and we got involved with many activities. University is muchmore complex than what we experienced but just to have a taste of it helps us tounderstand what it may be like in our future. We made friends, had fun, andenjoyed ourselves. The teachers played a large role in our enjoyment by gettinginvolved and ‘commentating’ as we did the different things, helping us tounderstand what it would really be like. The mentors also did this however theywere students there or postgraduates whereas Miss Hewitt and Miss Tickle werefully experienced. Overall, the trip was very good and not only did we learn from thelectures we sat in, we also learned from the activities in which we participated.7Bi have been working with Professor Rosie Sage on her COGS model forcommunication. AmsterdamI got the opportunity to go to Amsterdam with history. As therewere only two students going from our school, we went with 15students from St Benedicts, two of their teachers and JeffreyDunn. On the first day we arrived early in the morning and got the train and tram to our hostel, as wehad nothing planned for the first day we had the opportunity to walk around the city. Catherineand I were taken on a guided tour by one of the boys from St Benedicts who had been toAmsterdam several times before. The city is a lovely place to visit with narrow streets alongcanals, although it was very cold and rained almost every day; it was really nice to see the city.On the second day we were taken to the Anne Frank House Museum where we took part in aconference called “Coming to Justice”. We all learnt new things and got to know each otherbetter as we were now joined by three Dutch boys. At the end of the conference we were takenround the Anne Frank House, this was an amazing opportunity as you get to see exactly wherethe Frank family spent those years in hiding, There were also some objects in the house thatwere from the time, such as Otto Frank’s assistant’s desk. The third day we went back to the conference where we met Jayne, the lady who organised theconference and we did more activities with her including presentations on topics we had learnedthrough the day such as to formation of Yugoslavia. The next day we visited The Hague, the capital of Holland, to go to see the InternationalCriminal Court. We spent more time going through security than actually in the Court. However,we saw part of a trial where a man was being convicted of genocide. Afterwards we spent theafternoon in The Hague, which is another beautiful city.On the last day we spent another day in the Anne Frank House. We were lucky enough to beable to hear the experiences of a concentration camp survivor and a soldier from the Bosnianwar. Both stories were very interesting, but personally, the survivor of Bergen-Belsen wasfascinating as I have studied that era for 3 years. The trip as a whole was enjoyable and truly an experience I will never forget. The students fromSt Benedicts were really easy to get along with and both Catherine and I hope to keep in touchwith them. Sarah Corley & Catherine HunterYear 13Students involved in the Commenius project visited Prague. They performed in a production of Snow White and the SevenDwarfs and a Mid Summers’ Night Dream.
