(They’re all on the aforementioned It Ain’t Over! as well as past Delmarks.)Bass player of the Year- Bob Stroger • Drummer of the Year - Kenny SmithGuitarist of the Year - Lurrie Bell • Horn Player of the Year - (sax) Eddie ShawYou can vote for your favorite blues nominees at: www.blues.org/#ref=bluesmusicawards_nomineesZora Young’s version of Sunnyland Slim’s “Goin’ Back To Memphis” on her fantastic new CD, The FrenchConnection, now has extra special significance! Hopefully she will be performing an acoustic duet with herFrench musical collaborator, Bobby Dirninger, in Memphis at the Awards! Zora’s CD is currently #1 on theLiving Blues Radio Charts, and word just came in that French Connection won the prestigious Prix du Disquedu Hot Club de France, the same long-coveted French award that Jimmy Dawkins’ Fast Fingers won in 1971!Congrats, Zora! And the one and only Eddie C. Campbell’s birthday happens to fall on the same day as the Blues MusicAwards- May 6th- Hopefully this will be an extra special Birthday celebration! Eddie just left for a month longtour in Spain, after a wildly successful winter European tour in France and Germany.Speaking of awards, the results came in for The Grammy awards and although we were disappointed thatthe CD, Chicago Blues: A Living History (with Lurrie Bell, Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch) didn’twin, a former Delmark recording artist surprisingly/strangely won the blues grammy, the folk legend Ramblin’Jack Elliott. Bet you didn’t know there was a Ramblin’ Jack Elliott Delmark LP out there! Talkin’ WoodyGuthrie (DL-801) released in ’68 from a ’57 Topic session. Thankfully, the blues was represented (deservedly)in that Little Walter’s Complete Chess Masters Box Set won for best Historical Album. You never know what’s gonna come out of the Delmark vaults. We’re excited to announce that a long lostWillie Buck session from ‘82, The Life I Love (was called I Wanna Be Loved in a limited edition LP) is out atthe end of April on CD! This buried treasure blues recording features the much-missed Aces, brothers Louis& Dave Myers, along with Little Mack Simmons on harp and Big Moose Walker on keys. Willie Buck is oneof the best standup traditional blues singers still performing in Chicago. Check his MySpace!More Vinyl! We’re excited to announce more Delmark back on LP with the return of Little Walter’s firstrecordings (from the tiny Parkway label from 1950) with Muddy Waters, Sunnyland Slim, Baby Face LeroyFoster, JB Lenoir, and Robert Jr Lockwood - The Blues World of Little Walter, Delmark LP 648. These sidesfeature the best blues harmonica player of all time when he was 19 years old, including I believe Little Walter’sonly recordings on guitar. Don’t miss the pre-Chess versions of the chilling classic “Rollin’ & Tumblin’” (w/Muddy Waters)! Look for more Delmark on vinyl, including Otis Rush’s ‘70s Delmark classics.Speaking of which, Living Blues #205 has a fascinating article on ‘70s blues, and Delmark is represented, naturally! Jimmy Dawkins (All For Business with Otis Rush) Jimmy Johnson (Johnson’s Whacks), RobertJr. Lockwood (Steady Rollin’ Man), Otis Rush (Cold Day In Hell), and Junior Wells (South Side Blues Jam)are all listed in “30 of the Very Best Blues Albums of the ‘70s”, compiled by long time Living Blues writer, JimDeKoster. Congrats to Living Blues on their 40th Anniversary!!!!Look for a feature article coming out soon on country blues legend and former Jazz Record Mart“employee/talent scout” Big Joe Williams in our friend Marcel’s fantastic French Blues Magazine, ABS-Arvern’ Blues Society. On March 19-24, the 2nd Annual Fred Anderson Birthday Benefit Festival for the Velvet Lounge will takeplace at Chicago’s home for creative and thrilling jazz. The inspirational Chicago ageless legend, FredAnderson will perform, celebrating his 81st Birthday, along with many other Delmark artists, including JeffParker, Ernest Dawkins, Hamid Drake, and Corey Wilkes.Esteemed jazz critic, Neil Tesser, wrote a very interesting article recently in the Chicago Jazz MusicExaminer called “Dear Oprah: a little jazz before you split, please?” It is so frustrating that Oprah has neverfeatured any Chicago Jazz or Blues on her show. This really hit home for me as my pitches to have theamazingly talented and charismatic Nicole Mitchell on the show have fallen on deaf ears. I truly think that thegreatest living jazz flutist would be a perfect match to guest on Oprah- anyone reading agree?Young Chicago creative jazz men, composers, improvisers, Jazz Record Mart employees and cohorts, cornetist Josh Berman (most recently of the Delmark LP & CD Old Idea) & saxophonist Keefe Jackson havebeen on a European tour, including Switzerland & Serbia.Coming up on May 1, Bob Koester will travel back to his original Delmark home base town of St Louis, tospeak about Delmark history at the Sheldon Art Gallery – presenting “Legends of St. Louis Blues Music” (detailspage 15). Have you picked up artist Kevin Belford’s amazing St Louis music book, Devil at the Confluence? We just heard the sad news that our friend Jimmy Burns’ wife of over 40 years passed away. Dorothywas always by his side, and was a huge blues fan, seen at his shows always dancing and smiling. She will bemissed, and our condolences to Jimmy and the family.- Kevin Johnson, Delmark promotionsContents-Ira Sullivan - 5The Hungry Brain - 9Little Smokey Smothers - 7Rockin’ Johnny - 7Blues Reissue Survey - 9Frank Rosaly reviewed - 9Judi K on Jazz - 11Al Miller reviewed - 13Buying LP Collections - 13Jazz & Blues on Video - 17Jazz & Blues Books - 21CD Specials - 23Cassette Specials - 27OUT OF PRINT LPs -29Delmark Catalog - 36Delmark Other Formats - 38Order Form - 39phone: 1-800-684-3480Hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 8pmSaturday 10am - 8pmSunday Noon - 5pmRhythm & NewsPublisher - Robert G.
