If you'veenjoyed the Bird, Monk, Billie or Bud Powell off-air performancesissued by Columbia, ESP and perhaps other labels, you are alreadyfamiliar with his work. Most if not all of this material first appeared onone of Boris' several hundred labels.It's not hard to spot a Boris album. Virtually all the covers weredesigned by one guy. Many of the early albums testify to Boris' love ofRoy Eldridge's trumpet my adding Roy to the occasional song title (ICan't Give You Anything But Love Roy). Most of his LP jackets hadblank white liners. A few came in blank white jackets and we havesome pressings as-yet unjacketed. The names of the label is often thegiveaway, as are humorous credits to such sponsors as the jazzsociety of some tiny village where one can safely assume jazz to beonly a vague rumor to the local populace. (If those towns exist.)The source for his albums is almost invariably from radio broadcastshe taped quite professionally, and not always jazz. Boris' personaltaste was for traditional jazz but his jazz catalog ran the gamut fromBunk beyond Monk to Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman. It'sunfortunate that there were no blues broadcasts on New York radio.29
