Viledon ® Engineering: air intake unit construction for Gourmets
A project that was completely to MEGGLE’s taste
What does Freudenberg Filtration Technologies have to do with MEGGLE’s herb butter and pharmaceutical
lactose? Well, at least a little. Because we recently designed and built a new fi lter house for MEGGLE at the fi rm’s
headquarters in Wasserburg (Southern Germany). The handover of the new fi lter house took place just a few
weeks ago and represents another fl agship project for the new “Engineering Projects” business unit, globally
established on 1 January this year.
Facilities construction expertise is becoming increasingly important
“We have already delivered complete fi lter house constructions in the past, but the engineering branch of our
business has now taken on strategic importance”, said Dr. Stefan Berber, who is in charge of the “fourth pillar”
of Freudenberg Filtration Technologies. The other three are Industrial Air Filtration, Liquid Filtration and Automotive
Filters. The new business unit is active worldwide in the projects segment. The goal is to bundle locally
available knowledge and competencies to be able to offer customers needs-based solutions wherever they
are in the world, more quickly and effi ciently. In the course of the Wasserburg project, Freudenberg Filtration
Technologies had ample opportunity to demonstrate their expertise.
“The MEGGLE fi lter house features virtually every refi nement that we
can offer”, said project head Jürgen Kempf.
The principle is the same for all projects, no matter where the plant is
located. Just as clean air improves people’s well-being and performance,
the operation of gas turbines relies heavily on air that is as free of particles
and as dry as possible, and at the optimal operational temperature.
In the implementation of the MEGGLE project, therefore, it was necessary
to take into account site-specifi c differences and to offer the customer
unique solutions. After all, the warm and humid climate of the tropics
requires a different approach from the Alpine foothills of Bavaria.
MEGGLE
MEGGLE was founded in 1887 in Wasserburg, near Munich, as a
small cheese-making company. Today, MEGGLE is internationally
active and is one of the largest and most respected manufacturers
of milk products in Europe. The Group employs around 2,000
people worldwide and is dedicated to delivering top quality across
all its product lines.
A powerful system for the future
The new MEGGLE fi lter house is 1.5 times the size of its predecessor. It is
free-standing and can be completely disassembled within an hour, in the
event that the turbine needs to be changed. In addition, an anti-icing system
– specially developed by Freudenberg Filtration Technologies – guarantees
that both the fi lters and the bird protection grille built into the weather hoods
remain free of ice. This had been a consistent problem with the previous fi lter
house, with employees needing to knock ice from the weather protection
grilles in winter. In addition, the new plant includes a 3-stage fi lter system
with particularly energy-effi cient pocket and cassette fi lters. A striking feature
of the system is that there are only two fi lter walls but three fi ltration stages.
This has been achieved by using a patented space-saving connection system
to link the 2nd- and 3rd-stage fi lters in a single wall. An additional refi nement
is that fi lters can be separately changed as necessary, thanks to a pressure
differential monitoring system that constantly checks fi lter performance. Josef
List, head of the Wasserburg production plant, highly values these advantages:
“Quality is our primary concern at MEGGLE, and we are just as
demanding with our business partners,” he noted.
The experts speak: Viledon ® Engineering Team
Freudenberg Filtration Technologies is one of the global leaders in air and
liquid fi ltration. One of the keys to this positioning is the deep knowledge of
our colleagues, which brings together a great deal of combined expertise
under one roof. In our new series “Experts in Dialogue”, we talk to the people
responsible for creating the best solutions for our customers every day. In
this issue, we speak to Dr. Berbner, Head of Viledon ® Engineering.
Viledon ® News: Dr. Berbner, the new “Engineering Projects” business
unit started on 1 January 2011. With the recent MEGGLE installation
(see main story) you have already successfully completed another major
project. So things seem to be going well.
Dr. Berbner: Yes, we are very happy. As a new business area, we are
still very young – that’s true. But it is worth remembering that we have
been successfully building complete fi lter houses for some years now.
So we were already in a strong position in this area and have top experts
in our team, a lot of experience and excellent references. With Engineering
Projects, we now represent the fourth pillar of Freudenberg Filtration
Technologies, taking a strategically signifi cant place alongside Industrial
Air Filtration, Liquid Filtration and Automotive Filters.
Viledon ® News: Could you give us a brief overview of your competencies?
Dr. Berbner: Fundamentally, Viledon ® Engineering is active in two main
areas. First, in construction – that is, the renovation or new-build of fi lter
plants. This includes on-site status-quo analyses, consultancy, design of
fi lter systems, quotations using 3D-CAD drawings, analyses of technical
feasibility and economical viability, complete order handling and documentation.
The second branch of our operations centers on operations
service and support, and extends from fi lters and spare parts to the
training of key personnel and air quality measurements..
Viledon ® News: What is the scale of the fi lter houses you build?
Dr. Berbner: We really do everything, from small, turnkey solutions to
major installations. These include air intake units for power stations, refi neries,
compressor stations, waterworks, bottling plants, laboratories or
offi ce buildings. We are active worldwide. In order to offer specifi c on-site
solutions quickly and effi ciently, we have six global engineering hubs in
Brazil, China, Germany, India, Mexico and South Africa.
Viledon ® News: So there are significant differences between filtration
plants?
Dr. Berbner: Exactly. And in addition to business-specifi c factors, climatic
conditions also play and important role. A plant in Germany, for
example, presents different challenges from one in India. For damp and
warm climates, we have developed a special solution with Viledon ® eee.
Sy. Wherever they are in the world, turbine plants always need particlefree
and dry air at the right temperature, and that is what we provide.
Viledon ® News: Dr. Berbner, many thanks for the interview.
Viledon ® NEXX: tough on dust
Whether in sugar processing, plastics, chemical products, in steelworks
or foundries, or in surface treatment applications – wherever
there is a lot of dust, Viledon ® NEXX filter bags are the ideal solution.
The outstanding properties of the new surface filters are particularly
apparent in the recovery of powder products in the food processing
and pharmaceutical industries, or dusts in silos. Thanks to
the fine microfiber filaments structure, valuable recovered products
remain uncontaminated.
Viledon ® HEPA fi lters: in a class of their own
Viledon ® HEPA fi lters are the fi rst choice where the highest cleanliness
of intake, exhaust and recirculated air is required in ventilation systems.
Whether for EPA, HEPA or ULPA, our product range offers outstanding
solutions for fi lter classes E10 to U17.
In this context, our high-volume
HEPA fi lters have proven themselves
particularly valuable in
cleanroom applications. Among
other areas, they are used in hospitals,
medical facilities, laboratories
or industrial processes.
Thanks to minipleating technology
with micro-glass-fi ber papers
High fl ow volume EPA /HEPA fi lters. and optimised fi lter media placement,
they enable cost-effective
and reliable operation over a long time period. Our HEPA fi lters with
MDF, sheet metal or aluminium frames are also powerful and reliable,
as are our EPA MaxiPleat cassette fi lters. These products ensure, for
example, that air fi ltration in turbo machinery is operating at maximum
effi ciency. You can explore our full range of HEPA fi lters in our forthcoming
product catalogue or already today on our website.
Filter standard EN 779 to be revised
The new European norm for air filters is expected to become valid
in autumn 2011. The main changes: For filter classes F7 to F9, in
addition to average efficiency levels, a minimum initial efficiency of
35 % for F7, 55 % for F8 and 70 % for F9 will be required. “Unloaded”
initial efficiency is measured using a round media sample
treated with isopropyl alcohol (IPA). In addition, filter classes F5 and
F6 will be renamed M5 and M6, but without any effect on filter
classification criteria. By the way, all existing Viledon ® filters already
meet the new requirements.
International knowledge exchange
The working group abbreviation
ISO/TC142/
WG9 already signals
that the experts here
are involved in discussing
an extremely specialised
topic. This working
group exchanges
knowledge specifi cally on the subject of air fi lters for turbines and
stationary internal combustion engines within the framework of the international
technical committee “Cleaning equipment for air and other
gases”. Specifi cally, the working group comes together twice a year
to set unifi ed global standards for fi lters using the so-called ISO standards.
“These international standards are of great importance for
Freudenberg Filtration Technologies as a global company”, commented
Dr. Thomas Caesar, head of fi lter technology. If fi lters can be evaluated
worldwide using the same criteria, they can also be manufactured
and sold to consistent standards worldwide. At the end of March, the
company played host to a meeting of the Panel with 16 participants
coming from many European countries, as well as from the USA and
Japan. The meeting saw further progress made on the six ISO standards
with which the group is concerned.
