Picnic in the Courtyard

You Can Take iT
wiTh You
by rabbi Dan levin
At this time of year, I always feel
a mixed sense of excitement
and sadness.
My joy comes from
the culmination of our
programmatic and school
year. In the months of May
and June, we will celebrate
Confirmation with a wonderful
class of students, and rejoice
with many families in the
congregation whose children
will be graduating high school
and moving off into life.
My sadness comes from
knowing how much I will
miss these young people as
they embark on the next stage
of life. Confirmation year
is particularly intimate and
intense. Our class discussions
on what Judaism is and means
lead us into very meaningful
and personal conversations, and
the bonds that form are tight
and powerful. I feel privileged
to be part of that exploration
and growth each year. At the
same time, I have known many
of our graduating seniors since
they were in pre-school at
Temple Beth El. It has been a
privilege to watch them grow
into such fine young men and
women.
So I am excited and sad –
excited for what comes next,
and sad to say goodbye.
This is the essence of the
Jewish custom of Havdalah.
Havdalah is the ceremony
that marks the conclusion of
Shabbat. It is highlighted by
three special symbols – a cup
of wine, fragrant spices, and a
braided candle formed from
many wicks. Each of these
symbols is designed to help us
carry some sense of the spirit
of Shabbat into the week that
comes.
The wine symbolizes the
joy and sweetness of Shabbat
that we hope to carry with us.
The fragrant spices represent
the additional sense of spirit
we embrace on Shabbat. The
Hebrew word for fragrance,
“Re-ach” and the Hebrew
word for spirit, “Ru-ach” comes
from the same root. So we
inhale the fragrance as a
means of breathing in the
spirit of Shabbat we want to
take with us into the coming
week. The many wicks of the
braided candle represent all
the different paths each of us
travels in life that come together
to form the much brighter light
of Shabbat. We conclude the
ceremony by extinguishing the
candle in the wine, so that we
might temper our sadness on
concluding the holy time of
Shabbat.
The word Havdalah
itself means separation,
and separations invoke a
meaningful paradox. On the
one hand, our world cannot
exist without separations.
In forming the world, God
separated day from night, land
from sea, and humanity from
other creatures. We make
separations between good and
evil, holy and profane, right and
wrong. But at the same time,
we talk of a God who is One,
and we work toward a time
when all that separates us one
from another will be dissolved,
and all will be one and at
peace. But until that time of
perfection, we have to carry
with us pieces of what is good,
holy, and enduring as we make
life’s transitions.
At the end of June, we will
have to say goodbye to Steve
Dropkin, our Musical Artist-
In-Residence, who will be
leaving Boca Raton to serve
a congregation in Fresno,
California. Steve has given so
much to our congregation in
the last four years – on Shabbat
evening, with our Adult
Chorale, on Sunday mornings
in Kehilah at Religious School,
and so much more. We are
grateful for his gifts of service
to us – the gift of his music
and compositions, and the gift
To say that the past few years have been difficult is an understatement. Those of
us in the business of long-term fundraising have found it especially difficult with
so much emphasis being placed upon current financial needs. The obstacles
we face are consistent with every individual I know who is working to support
charitable organizations’ long-term fundraising efforts.
In our efforts to find long-term planning
opportunities that may provide immediate
relief to our congregants, we have
discovered an area that is consistently
overlooked, especially by our most senior
Temple members.
Many members have owned life insurance
for many years. Their policy (or policies)
are at the bottom of a drawer and have
not been reviewed by a professional for a
long time. Over the years, they have paid
premiums and have built up substantial
cash value. Their agent has left the business,
retired, or even passed away so no one is
“looking under the hood.”
There may be gold in these older
policies! Due to advancements in medical
underwriting, updated life insurance
policy design, and a reduced cost of life
insurance, many of these older polices can
be increased in death benefit by two or
threefold at no additional cost.
As endowment chair, I assisted one temple
member with his policies that had not been
reviewed in many years. This member had
previously been denied additional coverage
only a few years prior and felt, “Why look? I
can’t do anything with my current policies
due to my health.”
He could not have been more wrong. Not
only was he insurable, he was insurable at
the highest possible rate class when only
a few years prior he was uninsurable. As
a result, new insurance was established
where the existing cash value from his
current policy was transferred to a new
policy that was issued by a different life
insurance company. The new policy more
than doubled the death benefit of his old
policy. This member elected to donate the
additional death benefit to Temple Beth El
upon his demise.
I know many of you may be skeptical,
and may be thinking that his health was
far better than your own. You may also
think that you are much too old to obtain
life insurance coverage and let’s leave well
enough alone. You really must think again. I
personally am fifty-three years old, and three
years ago I had my first medical issue. I had
a stent placed in one of the arteries leading
to my heart.
I recently applied for life insurance and
was issued a policy by a very highly rated
carrier at standard rates of insurance, when
only five years ago no carrier would write
coverage on my life. This is not the only
example. In certain circumstances, men
who have had prostate cancer may also
qualify for coverage.
The example noted in this article is
only one alternative. Many insured’s are
still paying premiums. I have personally
run across situations where premiums are
substantially reduced using this identical
strategy. If we can help you accomplish a
reduced premium, maybe a portion, or all of
the savings, could be redirected to Temple
Beth El to help with our current financial
needs.
Regardless of your age, should you own
life insurance that has not been reviewed for
more than two years I urge you to discuss
this with myself or Amy Friedman who will
place you in contact with a member of the
endowment committee familiar with these
issues.
I urge you to look “under the hood.” Odds
are you will be pleasantly surprised at what
you will find!

Why Did I Wait?
By LINda SCHMIER
My husband, Bobby, and I have
been members of Temple Beth
El for 29 years. Our children,
Brian, Brad and Lauren, attended
Religious School, celebrated their
Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and Lauren
was confirmed in our temple
sanctuary. Brian and his wife,
Jamie, and their two children
are now members of Temple.
Temple Beth El has been an
important part of our lives and
we have been active participants
in temple activities.
My family is from Detroit,
Michigan. In 1972, my parents
bought a condo in Florida and
we followed in 1981. My parents
and brother settled in Broward
County and helped us share
many family simchas over the
years. They had the opportunity
to participate in the lives of their
grandchildren firsthand.
My father suffered from a
chronic medical condition. Over
the years his health declined.
Living close by, my brother and I
were able to help with the many
health issues that arose, and
offer my mother and father the
emotional and physical support
that they needed.
As my father’s medical
condition worsened, I wondered
how my family would be able
to visit on a regular basis if my
parents were buried in Michigan.
I pondered this situation for
quite a while until I made an
appointment to discuss this
with the temple’s mausoleum
6 T H E C H R O N I C L E | www.tbeboca.org
advisor, Emily
Gould. We had many
discussions until
I felt comfortable
enough to discuss
this with my parents
and brother. At first
my parents said,
“We have plots in
Michigan and made
pre-need funeral
home arrangements,
for us and your
brother.” Those arrangements
were made many years before
they moved to Florida. I said to
them, that I understood their
concern but explained to them
how important it would be for
the family to visit them at the
cemetery. If they were buried
in Michigan this would not be
easy to do. I suggested that they
should consider purchasing
a crypt at the Mausoleum. I
assured them that we would
be able to find a satisfactory
solution to their pre-need funeral
arrangements in Michigan.
My father passed away in
October of 2009. The difficult
decision that we could not
make before became an instant
reality. My mother left all the
final arrangements to my brother
and myself. We made the
decision to purchase a crypt for
our parents at the Temple Beth
El Mausoleum. During a very
stressful time it was comforting
to know that our parents would
always be near us, on consecrated
ground, at the temple where we
had celebrated so many family life
cycle celebrations. Several weeks
afterwards a crypt was purchased
for my brother.
I now have a better
understanding of why you should
make pre-need arrangements.
The most important factor is that
it eases the emotional burden
for your family at an extremely
difficult and stressful time. Our
family takes comfort in knowing
that it is easy to visit my father
and honor his life whenever we
come to temple.
88Maimonides Institute for Jewish Learning
As we prepare for the end of the school year, don’t forget about the
wonderful things that will be happening in May. On May 16th, 30 of
our teens will confirm their commitment to Judaism in our beautiful
Confirmation service. This service consists of writings and reflections
written by the teens as they experienced a year of learning, growing,
and connecting. Don’t miss this inspiring service held at 1:00 PM on
May 16th in the Sanctuary on the Main Campus.
As May rolls into June and the Florida summer approaches most
of our students will be spending more time in the pool than in a
classroom. This more relaxed time does not have to be without
Jewish influences and learning. Most secular schools have summer
reading lists to encourage academic skills and development during
the summer months. Religious education is no different. Although
some may not be in a formal religious setting over the summer,
being Jewish is a life long commitment. We know that children can
lose important academic skills acquired over the school year, so
why not incorporate Jewish activities into your summer plans.
Many of our children go to camps which are either exclusively
Jewish or have large Jewish populations. This summer Temple
Beth El will be represented at five camps which are part of the
URJ camping system: Camp Coleman, Camp Jacobs, Camp Kutz
Camp Eisner, and the newest URJ camp, 6 Points Sports Academy.
These campers will truly be living Jewishly 24/7. We wish all of
our campers a summer filled with wonderful new experiences,
friendships that last a lifetime, and fun!!!
While at home take just a few minutes a day to help your family
be conscious of your Jewishness over the summer. These activities
will provide a simple Jewish challenge or discussion to do each day
that will leave a lasting impression.
• Pick a Jewish hero or heroine and play 20 questions with your
family.
• Go to the public library or the temple library. Check out a book
about a Jewish holiday or Jewish personality.
• Look at your books from religious school. Share with someone
in your family 3 things you learned in religious school last year.
• Have a meal in an Israeli restaurant. Be sure to use the Hebrew
you know.
• Judaism teaches respect for all creatures. Be sure your pet has
enough water all summer long.
• Find Israel on the globe or a map. Is it big or small? Share all of
the facts you know about Israel.
• Go through your toys. Take the toys you no longer want to a
homeless shelter or to someone in need.
• While on a car trip, play the A-Z Jewish word game. A is for
apple that we eat on Rosh Hashanah. B is for Bat Mitzvah when you
are 13….
• Make up your own family 10 commandments.
Wishing everyone a safe, relaxing summer.
For my Mitzvah Project I made and sold
chocolate peace sign lollipops to collect
money for Camp Jenny.
Camp Jenny is a camp for
underprivileged inner-city children from
Atlanta. It is housed at Camp Coleman.
Since attending Camp Coleman I have
become very passionate about the
camp experience. It is my dream to
give as many children as possible this
opportunity. I have reached out to many
well known philanthropists to help in
my cause. Give a peace of your heart to
Camp Jenny.
My brother Chad and I have been volunteering at Regents
Park Nursing home for over six months. I was inspired to
volunteer through the JCC Mitzvah Day and realized that
elderly people love the attention and company of younger
people. I help by pushing the residents in their wheelchairs
to and from activities and mealtimes. I pass out food, call out
numbers on bingo night, and take the activity cart around
For my mitzvah project I raised money for the research of scoliosis. As many of
you know, I have scoliosis. Every day I have to wear a brace to keep my back
straight. The brace enables me to bend and do many everyday activities. I was
lucky to be diagnosed before I needed surgery, but I hope that scientists can find
a way of treating this disease that does not require the use of a brace, or does not
require surgery either. I collected donations for the National Scoliosis Foundation
through the internet, and I hope these funds will help in scoliosis research.
LeahBrand
My mitzvah project relates to my passion for
cooking. My mom was talking about how her
office was developing a cookbook as a V.I.P.
present to donors, and all the staff brought
in recipes to make into a cookbook. The idea
of creating my own cookbook seemed like
a great way to raise awareness and needed
funding for a worthy cause. I love to cook, so
why don’t I turn that into my mitzvah project?
The cookbook was a collection of recipes
provided by children and family friends. I
first asked all my friends to bring in recipes
with their names on them and an illustration
completed by them detailing the finished
product. My goal was to raise at least $500 in
profits that I would donate to the American
Cancer Society in honor of my Grammy who lost her battle with
leukemia. We were successful in raising $720.00.
the halls and hand out newspapers, magazines, or puzzles. I
also walk around and talk to all the residents and hear their
stories. I have enjoyed my experiences volunteering, and
I hope I will have enriched others by dedicating my time
to them. My brother and I will continue to volunteer at
Regents Park because we feel our contributions have made a
difference in our lives and theirs.

Dear Friends –
I want to share a story that I recently read—
“How We Grow”
In the town of Chelm, a magical, mythical place
where the people are very pious and very Jewish
but not necessarily very smart, two citizens were
engaged in an argument about how people grow.
One gentleman was convinced that people grow
from the ground up; the other was just as sure that they
grow from the head down.
Each gentleman was able to cite evidence to support
his opinion. The gentleman who believed that people
grow from the ground up said, “Just look at the army as
it marches by, and you’ll see that I am right. None of the
soldiers’ heads is at the same level, but all the soldiers
have their feet on the ground. That is proof that people
grow from the ground up.”
The other gentleman argued that if you look at the members
of the marching band as they pass by, you’ll see that the pants of
their uniforms don’t all reach their shoes. Some of the pants are
a little long, and some are a little short. That, he argued, surely
mother’s day
event – may 9
In the spirit of my
opening story I want
to remind you that
Brotherhood will be
hosting our annual
Mother’s Day event on
May 9. This year, unlike
previous years, we
have something very
different. The breakfast
will be catered by our
new TBE Caterer –
Chez Gourmet, with a
meal that will dazzle all
of you. In addition, this
year’s entertainment
will be some of the best FAU Student Musicians and
Vocalists that you have ever had the experience of hearing.
Do Not Miss this incredible event. Reserve your spot
through Nina Frankel at nfinkel@tbeboca.org or call her at
561/391-8900.
Mike Blackman
UPDaTE
indicates that people grow from the head down.
Since the two gentlemen couldn’t resolve their
disagreement, they went to see the rabbi. Each
man explained his belief about the method by
which human beings grow.
The rabbi listened to them both and said, “My
fair gentlemen, it is not that humans grow from
the top down or from the bottom up. It is true
only that they grow from the inside out.”
This story suggests that what we are like on the inside
affects what we are like on the outside. “So if we have
good hearts, and are caring, considerate, and if we are
thoughtful people, what will be evident on the outside are
acts of kindness, charity, good deeds, and other actions that
help make the world a better place.”
Brotherhood’s vision clearly embraces this path and
through our programs, initiatives, and community service,
along with your participation and involvement we truly
represent the essence of the above. If you haven’t joined
Brotherhood as yet, why wait. Join now and be part of
our passion to offer and provide a wide array of programs
to all and to better our community through our actions.
fishing event – june 2010
Once again we are going to have an encore of the amazing
Fishing event we held last August. The details are being
worked out but the anticipated date will be Sunday, June
6 or 11. More info will be available through our weekly
emails, flyers in the Linda and Robert Schmier Family
Membership Lounge as well as at Friday night services. If
you are interested, send me a note at Judymike99@aol.com
Havdalah Happening
By TRaCEy gROSSMaN
Picnic in the Courtyard
at the beck family campus
Havdalah means separation. It marks
the separation between the sacredness
of Shabbat and the beginning of
another week full of work, carpools,
errands and life. During Havdalah we
linger in the relaxation of Shabbat for
a few more minutes, delighting in the
intricate flame of the braided candle
and awakening to a new week with the
smells of the Havdalah spices.
Once a year, Beth El brings its
congregants together to partake in
this special Jewish celebration. Many
of you have attended at least one of
our annual “Havdalah on the Beach”
programs and this year we are very
excited to put a new spin on this
successful event. We hope that you
will join us on May 22nd for “Havdalah
Happening: Picnic in the Courtyard” at
our new Beck Family Campus!
As usual, the Havdalah Service will be
the main event, but there will be much
more! Our new caterer, Chez Gourmet,
is creating a picnic with flair. The food,
like the games and activities, will be
oriented to our picnic theme. There
will be activities under our covered
courtyard and Andrew Schwartz is
looking forward to organizing, but
mostly to playing in, the annual waffle
ball game on the large field behind the
Beck Family Campus.
Dina and Andrew Schwartz attend
“Havdalah on the Beach” every year.
Dina relishes celebrating the weekly
ritual in a camp-like setting that is
both casual and spiritual. She says,
“It is important to Andrew and me
for our family to be invested in TBE.
We feel that we are among the many,
many colorful threads creating the
beautiful piece of fabric that is our TBE
community.”
Those many threads are a large part
of why the event will be at the Beck
Family Campus this year. We want all
of our TBE members to feel equally at
home on the Main Campus and at our
new Western venue. We want to share
the beautiful space with those who
don’t get a chance to visit it that often.
And, as Melissa Weinberger, Chair of
the Early Childhood Committee said,
“Havdalah at the Beck Family Campus
is a wonderful opportunity for all of
Judaica Shop Gets
Makeover
If you haven’t stopped by the
Judaica Shop lately, put it on your
“to do” list. Sisterhood volunteers
Ina Hankin and Carol Gruverman
were recently recruited to bring
new browsing and buying “traffic”
into the shop and the makeover
is amazing. Their combined 40
years experience in the customdesign
gift basket and gift
wrapping business are serving
the pair well as they refresh the
look of the shop by reordering
and restocking the shelves
with an exciting high-end, yet
unbeatably priced inventory that
includes hand-signed pieces and
religious articles to treasure.
Temple Beth El’s Judaica Shop,
ideally situated opposite the
Starkoff Chapel on TBE’s Main
Campus, has long been providing
the membership with a unique
selection of gifts, ritual items and
books. A fundraising initiative of
the Sisterhood of TBE’s Women
of Reform Judaism (WRJ), the
Judaica shop at TBE is operated
by Sisterhood members.
“It is so important that temple
members support the Sisterhood
and its mission,” said Hankin.
“Buying from TBE’s Judaica Shop
is a fun and wonderful way to
show such support. Why search
other stores, when the best
collections at the best prices are
right here!”
Hankin has been a member of
TBE since moving to Boca Raton
from Philadelphia in 1979. She
and her husband George have
raised their three children, now
grown, with strong Jewish values.
Daughter Marcy Schultz is TBE’s
Assistant Director of Jewish
Learning and Living. Hankin
has supported the temple as a
board member, youth advisor and
committee leader. Her artistic
flair has driven Hankin to take
numerous courses in hand crafts
and design. When Hankin met
Gruverman, then the owner of
the store Baskets and Bears in the
Garden Shops at Boca, the two
immediately bonded personally
and shortly thereafter as business
partners.
Although new to TBE,
Gruverman has lived in
Florida for more than 40 years.
Gruverman, a widow, is a mother
of three grown children. She is a
former paramedic and currently
works part time as a dental
hygienist in Boynton Beach.
Throughout her life, Gruverman
has expressed her creative side.
By LINda HOLTz
She studied art at the famous
Pratt Institute in New York and is
an experienced calligrapher. The
team of Hankin and Gruverman
ran Baskets and Bears and
then switched gears slightly to
launch several related businesses
including their outside the box
gift wrapping company called
“Impressive Presentations.”
“Ina and I have put aside our
own business ventures so that
as volunteers we can help bring
the TBE Judaica Shop to the next
level, “ said Gruverman. “We are
eager to introduce the shop’s
new merchandise to congregants
and to the outside community as
well. The 20 percent discount on
every item in the store is sure to
be a crowd pleaser. TBE’s prices
are the best of any Judaica store
in the area.”
The Judaica Shop has holiday
Barbara Harper
Barbara Harper’s journey, which
began in rural Ohio, has branched
out into many directions. Raised on a
farm as a Methodist, Harper attributes
her maternal grandmother, an ardent
reader of the Old Testament, for
instilling in her a love of biblical
texts. With no objections from her
parents, Harper, the youngest of five
children, sought a rabbi and at age
17, began to formally learn Hebrew,
explore Torah and Jewish rituals.
Her immersion in the study and
practice of Judaism ultimately led to
Harper’s conversion. In later years,
she unraveled her father’s story and
discovered that he was the child of
German Jews. Orphaned at a young
age, her father had no awareness of
his Jewish identity. For Harper, this
familial connection to the Jewish
people makes a great deal of sense
given the spiritual path she has
chosen.
As a student at The Ohio State
University College of Nursing, from
1971 – 1974, Harper embarked in
a rigorous academic program that
would serve as the framework for
her professional career. It was a
turbulent time on college campuses
throughout the nation, and never
a passive observer, Harper fought
hard for her beliefs. Her political
activism did not distract her and she
graduated with a bachelor’s degree
in nursing, ready to face the next
challenge. She nursed in emergency
rooms, and with open-heart surgery
and neurosurgical patients. In 1984,
while working with mothers and
new-born infants at a Santa Barbara,
California hospital, Harper decided to
make obstetrical nursing her focus.
Once again she derived inspiration
from her maternal grandmother,
Estella Ethel Harper Lemonyon, a
nurse and midwife.
By LINda HOLTz
“My grandmother
was a great influence
and role model for me,”
said Harper. “As a child
I was very proud of
her strong work ethic,
knowledge and the
compassion made her
beloved throughout the
rural area where we
lived.”
Although determined to follow in
Lemonyon’s path, Harper took an
interesting turn in the road when
by chance she read an article about
waterbirths in Russia from a most
unlikely source – The National
Enquirer. Convinced of its benefits for
both mother and child, Harper began
to thoroughly investigate the concept
and eventually became trained in the
practice of waterbirthing. Unafraid
to challenge traditional medical ideas
and protocol, Harper was dogged in
her attempt to offer women a new
and less conventional approach to
childbirth.
In 1987, from what was then her
home base in Portland, Oregon,
Harper founded the non-profit
organization Waterbirth International
(www.waterbirth.org) so that she
could disseminate information about
waterbirthing to anyone who might
be interested. Now almost 25 years
later, as a nurse, midwife, doula, doula
trainer, child birth educator, and
mother of three, Harper has helped
families “discover the empowering
effects of laboring and giving birth in
water.”
Harper is affectionately known
as the world’s leading expert on
the subject. She has attended more
than 600 births in seven countries –
almost all of these births have taken
place in water. She has instructed
thousands of professionals and
traveled to 30 countries
to give courses on water
birthing. Her next stop
will be a 10-day rotation
in Viet Nam where she
will provide nurses,
midwives and doctors
with didactic and handson
training. A prolific
writer on the subject
of childbirth, Harper is the author
of Gentle Birth Choices, and the
soon-to-be published “The Complete
Guide to Waterbirth.” She is currently
working on “Embracing the Miracle:
How Pregnancy, Birth and the First
Hour Influence Human Potential.”
Her DVD, “Gentle Birth Choices,” has
been translated into seven languages
and is considered to be the biggest
selling DVD in the natural childbirth
movement.
Harper is new to South Florida.
A desire for warmer weather and
sunnier days brought her here from
the Pacific Northwest. She continues
to work in the field that she helped
discover, and continues to explore
her religious beliefs. Last year after
attending TBE’s Yom Kippur services
at FAU, Harper felt that she had found
just the right Jewish connection. She
became a member in February 2010.
“Throughout life’s journeys, God
has been by my side. God has
opened every door for me and has
always led me to the right place,” said
Harper. “Temple Beth El embraces
all three tenets of Judaism – God,
Torah and community. I feel well
supported here as I continue to delve
into Judaism through Torah study
sessions and prayer. I feel that God is
firmly planted in my heart. There is
great joy of developing a relationship
with God – to do this within the
context of a community makes this
joy even greater.”
