sights and attractionsNordlandsmuséet, <strong>Saltdal</strong>Located at Saltnes, about 1 km east of Rognan, this village is a collection of originalrural buildings, moved to the site of the old Skippergården Farm. The main buildingis from about 1750. The original owners were sailors and traders, as well as farmers.They sailed their ships to Bergen loaded with fish and furs, and returned loaded withcorn and consumer goods for the people of <strong>Saltdal</strong>. Photo exhibit on the 2nd floor.Small coffee shop and museum kiosk open during the tourist season.The «Blood Road» MuseumThis museum is located on the same site as Nordlandsmuséet, <strong>Saltdal</strong>. Located in anoriginal German barrack, the museum helps to show how the prisoners of war livedand worked from the time of their arrival in 1942, until the end of the war in 1945. Themuseum was opened by the Minister of Transport in May 1995, as part of the 50th Anniversarycelebration of Norway’s liberation. Some parts of the museum are accessiblefor wheelchairs. The film, “Blodsvägen”, is shown every day during the season. (thefilm is shown in the building called “Bøtten-Trøa”)Visiting hours at The «Blood Road» Museum:During the summer season, ca. Of the 2,368Yugoslavian prisoners of war who died inNorway during the war, 1,657 of them areburied at the Botn War Cemetery. The GermanRegional Cemetery, with 2,730 soldiers,is also located here, along with a MemorialPlaque dedicated to the 2,000 Germans whodied when the battleship Scharnhorst sank.Near the two cemeteries stands a Memorialfor the 111 Russians who were buried here,but who were later moved to another locationin Nordland County.The Blood RoadThe road from Saltnes to Saksenvik got itsname from the prisoners of war who workedbuilding the road. A Memorial Plaque, dedicatedto the Yugoslavs who died while buildingthe “Blood Road,” is located 1 km fromthe bridge which crosses the <strong>Saltdal</strong> River.There are also war memorials at Stamnes,Sundby, Røkland, Storjord and at the ArcticCircle.Old millstone quarry, SaksenvikThis old quarry has been dated to aroundyear 1000. Production in this quarry endedin the 1800’s. It is estimated that around3000 to 5000 millstones was made here.Traces from the youngest millstone productionis what we see on the quarry site today.Follow the sign from the main road, E6.Information and parking are located off themain road. Walk along the road from theparking area, on the south side from theSaksenvik tunnel, about 500 meter. Followthe marked path to Hestgarden andVassheia. The quarry site in Vassliheia islocated at an elevation of 450 meter, aboveSaksenvik. The centre includes film and photographicpresentations, exhibitions, a library and a shop. An outdoors recreational area contains a botanicalgarden displaying mountain plants. The centre is surrounded by walking paths, an arboretum, andfascinating natural and cultural history. Close by are the Junkerdal Gorge nature reserve and theJunkerdal and Saltfjellet- Svartisen national parks where there are unique possibilities for openair recreation. A magnificent place for hiking and experiencingnature. The canyon has innumerable twists and turns, and the gushing Junkerdal Riverwinds its way through the narrow gorge of the canyon. The highest mountain is Solvågtind, at1.559 metres above sea level. Junkerdalsura is also known as a botanical paradise and a permanentlyprotected area.


«Culture and Nature» pathIn the Storjord area there is a network of paths in picturesque surroundings. Many ofthese paths are wheelchair accessible. Nordland Nasjonalparksenter (Nordland NationalPark Center), <strong>Saltdal</strong> Turistsenter (<strong>Saltdal</strong> Turist Center) and Polar Camping are all connectedto the pathnetwork and are good starting points for walking tours.Bike pathTake a bike ride along the old E6 from Bleiknes, at the south end of the valley, toSaksenvik, at the north end of the valley. A brochure describing this path is availableat <strong>Saltdal</strong> Tourist information, Nordnes, <strong>Saltdal</strong> Museum, Rognan and local hotels andcampsites.Storjord “nature and culture” pathIn the Storjord area there is a network of paths in picturesque surroundings. Everytree species has its own identification plaque. Many of the trees are nearly one hundredyears old. The Storjord Forrest Rangers’ Lodge (Skogvoktergården)Situated west of Polar Camping, where the Lønsdal and Junkerdal Rivers meet. The natural beautyof this area is outstanding. The Lodge, completed in 1866, was the first residence of the StateForest Service. Today it stands fully restored and is often used by groups of outdoor enthusiastsfor overnight accommodation.GraddisGraddis Fjellstue is situated 56 km south of Rognan. Established in 1867 it is the oldest travellershostel in <strong>Saltdal</strong>. Now, 130 years later, Graddis Fjellstue is operated by the fifth generation of thesame family. Ca. 200 m from the hostel, heading towards the main road, you can see a pine tree,more than 1000 years old; one of the biggest and oldest in Scandinavia. But... please note that much of <strong>Saltdal</strong>’s mountainous terrain has been designated asa permanently protected area. This preservation is important in order to protect the delicate andvulnerable nature of many of the plants and animals that exist here. HikingHiking in the mountains of <strong>Saltdal</strong> will bring you to unspoiled nature. There are severalmarked paths, which together constitute the greater part of a comprehensive network ofpaths, tying several districts together. Good points of departure for hiking are the followinglocations: Graddis Fjellstue or the Junkerdal Turistsenter, both along route 77,the Polarsirkelen Høyfjellshotell, Polar Camping, Nordland Nasjonalparksenter, <strong>Saltdal</strong>Turistsenter and Nordnes Camp og Bygdesenter, all along the E6 Road. Other startingpoints for hiking: Semska (“Annas Plass”), Lønsdal, Graddis, Junkerdal, Langånes(Tretnes – old trainstation), Fossegård and Storengstua in Evenesdal. Along the markedpaths you will find a series of cabins that are owned by Bodø & Omegns Hiking Association(BOT). These cabins can be used for overnight accommodation. If you are inRognan then Rognan Fjordcamp is the starting point for a hiking trail along the westside of the fjord to the Tangodden lighthouse. Another trail leads to the Storflåget viewpoint,about 400 metres above sea level, while yet another trail goes up the <strong>Saltdal</strong> Rivertowards Medby Camping and then loops down through Osøyra to Rognan. From <strong>Saltdal</strong>Museum a trail will lead you up the Saltnesfjellet Mountain.Fjord FishingFish in the <strong>Saltdal</strong> Fjord are abundant, especially herring and cod, and the fame of thisfishing region has spread far and wide. Herring is particularly good during the autumnseason, but at any time of year you can also catch pollack, haddock, wolfish and seatrout.There is good fishing from the shore, but for the best results you might like to takea boat out on the fjord. Fishing in the fjord is free. Rognan Fjordcamp has a boat rentaland a wharf with a cleaning station and a freezer is available.
