MINDSET Care Newsletter January – June 2012
Chairman’s Message
It is my pleasure to be appointed as the Chairman of
MINDSET Care Limited on 1st April 2012. I would like
to thank Ben Keswick for his invaluable leadership and
contribution to MINDSET as its first Chairman.
At MINDSET’s 1st Anniversary celebration, we
appointed another 12 young executives from the
respective Jardine Matheson (“JM”) Group companies
to the Jardine Ambassadors (“JA”) programme.
Together with the pioneer batch of JAs, they will
continue to spearhead MINDSET’s initiatives in
Singapore by working towards promoting, raising
awareness, understanding of mental health issues,
and supporting individuals, families and organisations
that require assistance in connection with mental
health-related matters.
In the first half of 2012, the JAs have organised two
Fun Days. Additionally, the Education team has
started the Mental Health Awareness Campaign for the
JM Group companies. Through this campaign, staff
from the various JM Group companies gained
awareness and understanding of MINDSET’s
initiatives and came forward to commit themselves to
support MINDSET.
The Social Enterprise team has carried out two shelf
projects in conjunction with Valentine’s Day and
Mother’s Day. The proceeds were contributed to Simei
Care Centre towards programmes supporting their
clients’ rehabilitation and vocational independence.
Mental Health First Aid Workshop
The newly appointed Jardine Ambassadors together with the
Steering Committee members at the Appointment Ceremony.
The Back to the Workforce team has placed two
beneficiaries’ clients in administrative positions in the
last year. This year, the team aims to help more
rehabilitated clients to find job placements as they
work towards helping these clients reintegrate into
society.
I am also pleased to inform that MINDSET has
obtained its charity status in April.
The progress so far would not have been possible
without all of your contributions and support. I look
forward in working closer with the JM Group
companies and the JAs to drive MINDSET.
Alex Newbigging
A 2-day first aid training was conducted for the newly recruited Jardine
Ambassadors by Silver Ribbon (Singapore), Porsche Poh, Executive Director of
Silver Ribbon (Singapore) and Board Director of World Federation for Mental
Health.
The Jardine Ambassadors were taught how to recognise the symptoms of mental
illnesses, provide initial help and guide a person towards appropriate professional
help. At the workshop, Jardine Ambassadors undertook dual role playing, by
being both a First Aider and client. The experience allowed them to better
understand the feelings and reactions of the mentally ill.

BACK TO THE WORKFORCE
Transitional Employment Model
The Back to the Workforce team has implemented the
Transitional Employment Model which provides training
and learning opportunities to beneficiaries’ clients. Working
hand-in-hand with the Education team, the Back to the
Workforce team obtained support from various Jardine
Matheson Group companies to create permanent positions
within their units.
Jardine Ambassadors and Occupational Therapists of IMH
have started crafting out suitable job responsibilities in
Dairy Farm, Mandarin Oriental, Jardine Cycle & Carriage
and Jardine One Solution.
The team conducted workshops at IMH giving guidance to
their clients on how to apply for a job starting with how to
write a resume and what to expect at the job interview.

Gifts from the Heart
Mental Health Awareness Campaign
The Education team has actively rolled out the Mental
Health Awareness Campaign to the JM Group companies.
They visited Dairy Farm, Gammon Construction, Jardine
Shipping Services, MCL Land, Mandarin Oriental and
Jardine One Solution to share with the management staff
on how to handle mental wellness concerns in their
companies.
IMH Volunteer Programme Manager, Catherine Chua, also
volunteered her time to share on topics relating to
depression, the most common mental illness in Singapore,
and how to identify and manage depression.
Occupational Therapist of IMH shares with the Giant’s staff
on how to interact with IMH’s clients during job interviews.
Since the implementation of Shelf Projects last year, the Social Enterprise
team has continued to work closely with Hougang and Simei Care Centres to
create more exposure opportunities for their clients’ handicraft works. Aside
from assisting beneficiaries’ clients to achieve self-sustainability, the Shelf
Projects also function to promote awareness on MINDSET and its’ initiatives
to the public.
Shelf Projects were conducted at selected 7-Eleven outlets on Valentine’s
Day and Mother’s Day. The sales of the handicraft works exceeded last
year’s sales and about 40 clients from Simei Care Centre benefitted from the
sales proceeds from both events.
The Social Enterprise team is encouraged by the results and are working
towards the next MINDSET Roadshow at CityLink Mall in July.

FUN DAYS
A Nature Walk @ Bollywood Veggies
For MINDSET’s first Fun Day of the year, the Jardine
Ambassadors brought a total of 80 clients and staff from
Institute of Mental Health and Hougang Care Centre to
Bollywood Veggies, a ten acre organic farm located in the
rustic environment of the northwest Kranji countryside.
The clients had an opportunity to step out of their regular
inpatient wards and took a relaxing walk around the farm.
The farm guide educated the group on the facts and uses
of various vegetables, fruits, and herbs through smell,
touch and taste.
The group was taught on how to pot their own plants, and
most of the clients were delighted to bring home a pot of
pandan leaves or lemongrass for their use in the kitchen
back home.

A Day of Adventure at the Singapore Zoo
On a bright and sunny Saturday, the Jardine
Ambassadors and MINDSET Steering Committee
members brought 60 Simei Care Centre’s (“SCC”) clients
and staffs for an adventure tour at the Singapore Zoo.
Nestled in the heart of a nature reserve, the Singapore
Zoo provided a serene backdrop for the visit.
The group visited the various Zoo exhibits - highlights
included the polar bears, white tigers and the all-time
favourite orang utans. The group also enjoyed the
popular Animal Friends Show and were delighted with
much laughter and surprises by the adorable animals.
After a sumptuous meal at KFC, the group departed
back to SCC, tired but happy.
