Why I Love Autumn
I love the cooler mornings filled with frost and sunshine, revealing bursts of
color from the area landscape.
I benefit from the bounties in our garden. From baskets of fruits and
vegetables to fall flowers . . . each natural beauty brightens our home.
I enjoy the smells of hearty root vegetable casseroles, tasty squash dishes
and spicy pumpkin soup.
I also enjoy planning our annual Samaritan Club Gala. Members include
those who have made single or cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more using
one or more of these methods:
♦ Gifting cash or stock;
♦ Donating their Life Lease Refund;
♦ Investing in a Charitable Gift Annuity;
♦ Naming Porter Hills as a beneficiary in their will, trust, retirement plan
assets or their life insurance policy.
Recycling Changes
The Environmental Services Department and the Resident Advisory Council
7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gallery and on September 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Towne Square. We have a new recycling service and some changes are
necessary to ensure proper recycling. Also, there will be some new
instruction posters in the trash rooms. Please put one of the above dates
on your calendar. We look for your presence and support of our Recycling
program.
Flu Clinics
clinics at the end of this month.
Porter Hills Women’s Board
Eleanor Gorman, Chairman, Display Case
The Women's Board members hope each of you had a wonderful summer --
it was a hot one, wasn't it? I was in and out of the community during the
summer and everyone seemed to be coping very well.
The artwork made by the children in Generations over the summer was so
adorable and received many favorable comments. Like the Women's Board
members, I am sure you are all better informed about the goals of
Generations.
More magnificent artwork is in store for you during the month of September
when the computer-designed arwork of Cort Cameron is displayed; his
coloration and designs are unbelievable. Cort is a local artist, and we are so
pleased he is sharing his artwork with Porter Hills Village residents.
Looking ahead, October will feature "Pure Michigan" or "Made in Michigan,"
which you should find of interest.
Election Topics and Absentee Ballots
A resident-led group will be gathering to discuss the November election.
The purpose of the meeting is to explain the issues on the ballot and to
provide information.
Presentation of the issues and discussion will be for information only, as
your fellow residents leading the discussion will provide a non-partisan view.
Political office holders and candidates will not be at this meeting.
Applications will be available for absentee ballots and voter registration.
Please mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Gallery. Please contact Larice at ext. 10235 if you have any questions prior
to the meeting.
One Last Picnic at the Pond!
Dale Simmons, Dining Services Director
It’s hard to believe that summer has come and gone! We’ve had some
wonderful meals this summer at the pond for both breakfast and dinner.
Dining Services is planning on doing one last Picnic at the Pond on
Wednesday, September 19, at 5:00 p.m.
We will serve a BBQ Rib Dinner with Baked Potato,
Coleslaw, Corn on the Cob, Garlic Bread, and
Marlene’s decadent Peach Cobbler. Be sure to bring
your friends along for the cook-out! This will be our
grilling finale for the summer.
Please make reservations in the Main Dining Room
reservation book or at the Gardens East Reception
Desk. Cost is $11.00 for guests and those not on a
meal plan.
New Committees
Would you like to be a part of the planning and brainstorming for new
activity ideas? We are looking for your feedback! Two new committees
will be forming, a Spiritual Committee and Educational Committee. Being
a part of either of these groups requires little time; we will most likely meet
once every two months. The Social Committee will continue to meet the
first Monday of each month, as usual. If you are interested in either of
these new groups, please plan to attend the appropriate meeting.
Spiritual Committee - Tuesday, September 18, 4:00 p.m., Gallery
Educational Committee - Tuesday, September 25, 4:00 p.m., Gallery
A Day Hemmed in Prayer
I believe in prayer. I've felt its power too many
times in too many ways not to believe.
My mother was a firm believer in prayer.
Whenever she would misplace her car keys, for
example, she would simply pray about it and quit
hunting for them. I could never understand that and I would think: "Keys
are not going to materialize, Mom. If you don't search for them, you will
never find them." That was not her perspective at all. Instead, Mom
would ask God to show her where the keys were and then sit at the
kitchen table and read for a while. Later, in a way that I always thought
defied logic, she would pick up her keys and drive to wherever it was
she needed to go. What happened in those moments? My guess is that
prayer made her grow calm. Her mind was less anxious or frenetic.
And, once calm, she remembered where she left them. Mom did not
agree with that. She would simply say: "I asked God to show me where
I left my keys, and He did."
Perhaps I'll never actually figure out what really happened. But my
Mom's actions taught me a valuable lesson. She was firmly convinced
that God cares about our cares, is concerned about our concerns, and
listens when we cry out in fear, pain, or need. While managing a
Universe, my Mom believed that God still was loving and attentive
enough to care when she had misplaced her car keys. Jesus said
something like that. "Even the hairs of your head, He numbers."
I heard Kurt Walenda say the same thing earlier in the summer when he
walked on the tightrope stretched across Niagra Falls. When asked
about his saying a prayer in the middle of his walk he answered –“ why
is that so strange – the Bible says we should pray always- so that’s what
I do! God knows I always need His care.” That humble artist believed
that prayer is always appropriate, always! Whether it is about car keys
or tightrope walking or illness or family struggles or loneliness….prayer
always fits.
There's an old adage that says: "A day hemmed in prayer is less
likely to unravel." Put that to practice in your life. I promise it
holds true.
Faithfully,
