JUNIOR BOOKLET
2011-12
WELCOME,
new and returning members.
The Champion Bay Surf Life Saving Club’s junior program will offer a
range of beach activities for young people from the ages of 5 to 13 years
to enjoy.
The junior program provides a surf life saving experience in a safe environment
where children can meet new friends, learn about the beach,
have fun and compete.
Junior members will have the chance to develop leadership skills, be
educated in surf skills and participate in surf play and sport activities.
Emphasis will be on juniors having fun, developing confidence and skills
both in the water and on the beach and providing opportunities to meet
and compete with juniors from other Clubs.
It is a Club requirement that all Juniors plus a parent/guardian be registered
financial members prior to commencing junior activities.
We ask you to remember that our club is completely volunteer run, including
our age managers.
3

JUNIOR ACTIVITY PROGRAMME
The Champion Bay SLSC junior activity program emphasises four key learning
areas through which juniors can develop their surf knowledge and skill. These
areas are: surf education, sport, recreation and leadership.
SURF EDUCATION develops the knowledge of the beach environment, its hazards
and safety, skills in running, wading, dolphining, swimming, board paddling
and beach flags. The older age groups also cover basic airway management
and basic rescue procedures
SPORT gives opportunities to compete with club mates and with members from
other clubs at carnivals in structured junior surf life saving events.
RECREATION rather than sport and competition it is achieved when participating
and having fun at the same time.
As a junior member moves through to the older age groups there will be increased
chances to develop LEADERSHIP skills especially during combined age
group events.
The junior program includes a range of certificates and awards that can be
achieved across each age group from Under 6 - Under 14.
UNDER 6 and UNDER 7—SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Surf life saving clubs are not obliged to run these younger age groups. Champion
Bay has chosen to offer a programme to these younger age groups. To
ensure that this programme is run safely and fairly for all some guidelines must
be observed.
Every child must be accompanied by an adult to these sessions, this will include
accompanying the child onto the beach and into the water – and will involve
getting wet – particularly during ‘board’ and 'wade' sessions. ‘One on one’ supervision
provides these young children with increased safety and security and
allows individuals to be assisted according to their own attention span and concentration
levels. This allows the age managers to better manage the group and
their activities.
The focus of activities for these junior members is designed to be play, participation
and fun whilst gaining confidence and knowledge. Sport based competition
is not a focus at this age level.
Your observance of these guidelines will ensure the continued success of this
junior programme.
JUNIOR ACTIVITIES
Junior activities cater for 6 - 13 year olds on Sunday mornings from 9.00am to
10.30am from 30 October 2011 to 25 March 2012 at Champion Beach, corner
of Foreshore Drive and Forrest Street.
Juniors are asked to be on the beach at 9.00am for a 9.15am start at which time
announcements (if any) will be made and juniors then move off to their age
groups.
We request that parents remain on the beach while their children are participating
in junior activities and parent assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Please make contact with our Junior Co-ordinator if you would like to assist.
Setting up the beach commences each Sunday from about 8.15am with equipment
unloaded from the trailers. Adults are very welcome to help during set
up and pack up at the end of activities.
Each week Age Managers will organise a program relevant to their age group.
The program usually commences with a warm up followed by water and beach
activities with a focus on fun, competition and surf education.
At the conclusion of activities all juniors are ‘signed off’, the Age Manager collects
their caps at which time the juniors may return to their parents and enjoy
the ‘sausage sizzle’ and a drink.
Remember - be “SUNSMART”
Wear a hat, “rashie” or T-shirt, bathers & sunscreen.
Club Rashies available from the Uniform Officer
 Bring a water bottle.
 Remove or tape jewellery.
 Sunglasses are a good idea.
 Swimming goggles are recommended .
Do not forget to reapply sunscreen.
Club bathers are necessary for Under 11 - Under 14 as these age groups can
compete at local and state carnivals. Bathers are available from the club’s
Uniform Officer.
5

Juniors are welcome to use boards and equipment outside junior activities but
remain the responsibility of their parent when not wearing a cap or in the care
of an Age Manager. Any borrowed equipment should be rinsed and returned
to the trailers.
Senior surf lifesavers patrol the beach from 9.00am to 1.00pm each Sunday
from November to March and Public Holidays from 9.30 to 11.30am.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
REMEMBER to
‘SWIM WITH A BUDDY’
and
‘SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS’.
Champion Bay SLSC is entering its eleventh season at Champion Beach, off
Forrest Street. Getting involved in Surf Life Saving can become a life style and
can be very rewarding. Learning new skills, making new friends and having fun
are priorities.
It is a requirement that a parent/guardian becomes a member when their
child/children join as juniors. This assists the Club when parents/guardians get
involved with activities or wish to undertake life saving training.
It is great to see that over the years parents/guardians are becoming more involved
and we welcome their involvement this season. We believe surf lifesaving
is for the whole family and our junior program relies on parents providing
assistance in whatever way they can.
We encourage parents/guardians to take an active role in the junior program.
There are opportunities to -
participate in life saving training in the form of resuscitation and rescue tech-
niques.
 help set up equipment.
help Age Managers to organise and record events.
become an Age Manager - training is provided.
help with water safety during water based sessions.
help pack up at the end of the day.
Maybe there is an aspect of the junior program in which you would like to be
6

involved – being involved and participating is what will make our club a fun
place. Please feel free to join in.
WATER SAFETY
Another way for parents to be involved is through water safety. It is a national
lifesaving requirement that there be one (1) water safety officer for every five
(5) children in the water.
Resources of the volunteer surf life savers are usually stretched during junior
activities, therefore parents and/or guardians are encouraged to help with water
safety during this time. Water safety officers must be proficient in either the
Surf Rescue Certificate or the Bronze Medallion.
This first involves obtaining a Surf Rescue Certificate. This is a very practical and
worthwhile course and within the capabilities of most adults (over 13 years of
age). The only prerequisite is to have completed a 200 metre swim in 5 minutes
or less (1min 15sec per 50m lap of a pool) prior to beginning the course. The
course consists of learning units in surf awareness, emergency care, basic first
aid, rescue techniques, carries and supports, surf skills, and patrols.
If interested, please contact our Education Officer, Debra Silver, to give your
details and ask any questions about the training program. You will then be notified
of the next SRC training sessions.
Total course duration is approximately 12 hours.
AGE MANAGER
We also run an age managers course to ensure those looking after our juniors
are suitably qualified. Parents are encouraged to consider becoming an age
manager to assist with group supervision and management. Surf skills are not
essential as youth members are available to assist with surf techniques and
demonstrations.
Many hands make light work
AGE GROUPS
In junior surf life saving, the age group a junior participates in is determined by
their age at midnight on 30 th September.
For example: if a child has turned 10 years of age by midnight on the 30th September
2011 they will participate in Under 11’s. If a child turns 10 in 2011 after
30 September they will participate in Under 10’s.
Children under the age of 7 years are to accompanied by a parent or guardian
at all times, including in the water, during junior activities.
NIPPER CAPS
A coloured cap must be worn by all juniors when participating in junior activities.
Your cap must be tied on your head. This is for your protection so we
know you are part of an age group. Each age group has its own coloured cap.
Under 6 purple Under 11 light blue
Under 7 purple Under 12 maroon
Under 8 yellow Under 13 light green
