Research PlanAs an FYI – you should take some pictures during your experiment. Think of 3 times it would begood to take pictures, and write the dates down. Remember to record who took the pictures(even if it was you). Remember to show that you are taking the proper safety precautions inthe pictures (goggles, gloves, lab coat, etc.) if you are dealing with ANY sort of chemical- thisincludes water.Do this while you experiment NOT in your Research plan!!!Requirements:● Initial Proposal – this would be your Problem/Question, Hypothesis, and Variablescorrectly identified. It is strongly suggested that you get this typed. If you changed from●●●●your proposal you need to redo this so it is related to your procedureMaterials List – this needs to be DETAILED you should identify the sizes of the materialsyou are using. Remember to use METRICS!!!Procedure – this needs to be done IN DETAIL. Make sure you are clear and EXACTLYdescribe what you are doing and how you are doing it.Preliminary data/observations –Turn in a SAMPLE data chart of how you will recordyour data and observations as you experiment (there will be no numbers in this – youhaven’t started experimenting yet). Keep in mind that you need to repeat it severaltimes (at least 3 before mid- November). What types of things might you be observing?Define what data you will be collecting.9 TH GRADE ONLY – You need to fill out the appropriate forms and checklists. You arerequired to have the two attached turned in with your research plan, but you may haveto get some other forms signed for your project, depending on what you are doing. Seeme if you have questions about other forms. This will DEFINITELY be needed if you aredoing human or any other type of vertebrate study.Outline the overall procedures for your experiment in VERY SPECIFIC DETAIL. Your proceduresshould be written so that I can understand HOW you are going to attempt to do yourexperiment. Your procedures should be written so that anyone could repeat your experimentin exactly the same way you did it. Leave no question as to what you are doing. Write in a stepby-stepformat.Example of great detail:THIS:Place a 500 ml beaker, filled with 400 ml of water, on the hot plate.NOT THIS:Place a beaker of water on the hot plate.

Example of step-by-step format:Step #1: Gather the following supplies for the experiment. (Then list supplies.)Step #2: Place 250 ml of vinegar in a 500 ml beaker.Step #3: Add 3 grams of powder A to the beaker with the vinegar and stir until powderdissolves.Step #4: Observe what happens when you mix powder A and the vinegar and record yourresults.Step #5: Place 250 ml of water in a 500 ml beaker.Step #6: Add 3 grams of powder B to the beaker with the water and stir until powderdissolves.Step #7: …Step #8: …Grading RubricProposal – Copy ofthe Problem,Hypothesis, andVariableIdentificationMaterials ListProcedureDataGrammar, Spelling,Punctuation,Neatness9 th GradersONLY!!!!Excellent4 pointsInitial proposalturned in AGAINwith all errorscorrectedAll materials andthe setup used inthe experimentare clearly andaccurately listed.Procedures arelisted in clearsteps.
