‘Floating’ Validation Code Provides Protection
For Retailer, Player
Keeping Scratchers secure is a priority of the Missouri Lottery, and ensuring they remain protected in retail
locations before they are sold usually is up to retailers. But the Missouri Lottery is taking steps to help retailers
keep tickets secure and prevent financial loss.
Beginning with game 673, “100 Million Dollar Blockbuster,” the three-digit validation number is now being
boxed and placed in various areas within the play region of the Scratchers tickets. Prior to game 673, the three
validation numbers were located within the VIRN (Void If Removed Number) at the bottom of the ticket and
were identified with a line above them. Now the three numbers will be boxed and “floated” to various areas of
the ticket.
“Floating the validation numbers will better protect retailers and players,” said Daryl Backes, security
specialist with the Missouri Lottery. “It might require a little more scratching of the ticket and add a few more
seconds to the transaction, but the advantages will outweigh any disadvantages.”
Backes said the lottery industry is beginning to “float” or move the validation code to better protect retailers
and players against dishonest clerks. He said the Missouri Lottery has been involved in cases where retail
employees have been scratching or “pin pricking” Scratchers tickets just enough to see the validation code.
The winning Scratchers tickets are then validated and the prizes paid out, and the non-winning tickets are sold
to unsuspecting players.
“Retailers can lose thousands of dollars, and of course, players are denied the chance to
purchase a winning ticket,” Backes said.
Mike Cavender, the Lottery’s sales management analyst, said there will be a
transition period when the older tickets will still have the validation code located at
the bottom of the ticket within the VIRN, while the newer ones will have the floating
boxed numbers.
“It will be a little difficult during the transitional period
to determine where the validation code might be, but it’s also been
difficult teaching new store employees about the over-lined three
numbers,” Cavender said.
“Boxing the numbers should make it easier to teach new employees
about validating tickets, and moving the boxed numbers around on the
ticket will make it a lot more difficult for unscrupulous employees to pin
prick the tickets without getting caught,” he continued.
New Mega Game Is A Blockbuster
The red carpet is down, and crowds are eagerly awaiting the latest blockbuster, the Missouri
Lottery’s “100 Million Dollar Blockbuster” Scratchers game. With 10 $1 million prizes and
more than $100 million in cash prizes, this new $10 game is expected to be a crowd favorite.
“100 Million Dollar Blockbuster” is the fourth mega Scratchers game issued by the
Missouri Lottery.
“We pack a lot of winners into our mega games, and this game is no exception,” said Bill
Burton, instant product manager for the Missouri Lottery. “In this newest game, there are more
than 180,000 prizes from $100 to $500 and more than 4,800 prizes from $1,000 to $20,000.”
Top prize winners will have the option of collecting their prize in annual payments of
$50,000 for 20 years or a cash payment equal to the cost of the $1 million annuity.
$3 Billion To The State And Growing!
Congratulations Missouri Lottery players! Because of you, the Missouri Lottery
has exceeded $3 billion in proceeds to the state of Missouri and public education
with its August revenue transfer.
The $3 billion in transfers represents the total amount in proceeds that the Missouri
Lottery has contributed since it began selling tickets on Jan. 20, 1986. Through
fiscal year 1993, the Lottery’s proceeds of $542,540,033 went to the state’s General
Revenue Fund. In August 1992, Missouri voters approved an amendment to direct
all Lottery proceeds to public education, and since July 1993, when the law took
effect, the Lottery has contributed $2.5 billion to the state’s public education system.
A complete list of how Lottery proceeds are being used in fiscal year 2008 is
included in the fall issue of the Winning Times.

Play Pick 3, Get Second Chance To Win
Grab your chance to win with Pick 3 and get a second chance to win for free.
Pick 3 players will have a second chance to win up to $600 with the “Pick 3 Midday Bonus Numbers”
promotion Sept. 30 through Oct. 27. The four-week promotion will give Midday Pick 3 players the
opportunity to double their chances of winning.
During the Midday drawing, conducted at 12:45 p.m. daily, a second drawing will be conducted from
three white balls and one orange ball. If the orange ball is drawn, a bonus set of Pick 3 numbers will then
be drawn, giving players two sets of winning numbers. With two sets of winning numbers, there will be
twice as many winners.
If the orange ball isn’t drawn at least four times during the
promotion, the “Pick 3 Midday Bonus Numbers” promotion
will continue until the orange ball is drawn a fourth time.
Pick 3 Promotion Makes Retailers Winners
Your chance to win one of 18 $1,000 prizes is happening
now. From Sept. 30 through Oct. 27, while Pick 3 players
promotion, retailers have the chance to win one of the $1,000 prizes or a Pick 3 Fun Box with T-shirts and
jumbo clip pens.
Three retailers in each of the six sales districts – each of the three sales regions has two sales districts
– with the highest dollar increases in sales will each win $1,000.
Weekly prizes of the Pick 3 Fun Box will be awarded to the top-selling Pick 3 retailer in each of the 39
sales routes in the state. Four weekly prizes will be awarded in each sales route during the promotion.
The Pick 3 Fun Boxes include 20 T-shirts and 20 jumbo clip pens.
Retailers Win Big Prizes In Pull-Tab Promotion
Big Pull-Tab prizes in “$1,000 Blazin’ Bucks” and “$500 Cash Dash” mean big prizes for retailers,
too. The Lottery’s two newest Pull-Tab games went on sale on Sept. 19, kicking off the retailer
promotion “Blazin’ Cash Bash,” which awards retailers the same top prize that their customers
win playing the two promotional games.
Throughout the promotion, every time a player wins either the $500 prize in “$500 Cash
Dash” or $1,000 playing “$1,000 Blazin’ Bucks,” the retail location that sold the winning
ticket also will receive a cash prize that equals the top prize sold.
