Cast members from stage musical ‘We WillRock You’ entertain corporate guestsSharmila Nicollet from IndiaLocal golfer Martina Eberl soaksthe tournament winner Anne-LiseCaudal in celebratory champagnePernilla LindbergIt is not just the world class golf thatattracts so many spectators, but therelaxed, party atmosphere which organisershave created to create a fun and familyfriendlyenvironment. With a beer garden,on-stage entertainment in the largepublic area and sporting celebrities inattendance, each year the organisers setout to break preconceptions about golf’straditional, stiff and stuffy image. There is something for everyone: speciallydesigned play areas for children, livestreaming and information for their parentswhether they are relaxing on the weekendor enjoying a business lunch in the VIParea, good food, golf clinics and shopping.Little wonder that the tournamenthas established itself nationally andinternationally with an enviable reputationamongst the players. Over the last fiveyears, the event has attracted some of theworld’s most recognisable faces includingAmerican stars Michelle Wie and LexiThompson as well as US-based Germanheroine Sandra Gal.This unique tournament offers no end ofoutside the ropes activities built aroundthe golf to entertain the amateurs andmake the professionals feel special. Therespected luxury car manufacturer Audi isa key partner and a gleaming red Audi R8Spyder is a highly desirable hole in oneprize parked on the 15th tee. In addition tothe 52,500 euro first prize, there is also anAudi A5 Cabriolet for the winner.Several players take the opportunity to testdrive an Audi R8 Spyder down the nearbyopen country roads and autobahns duringthe tournament week. Meanwhile there is ahighly exclusive Sponsor and Players’ Nightat HypoVereinsbank Forum in downtownMunich, where last year members of the castof the West End musical ‘We Will Rock You!’delivered a private on stage performance. In terms of the level of detail andorganisation of the event with the oncourse banners, marquees, balloons andpublic area, the marshalls and crowds, theevent is in a league of its own.The Pro Ams always attract a host ofGerman celebrities, such as the formerinternational footballer Olli Khan andoffer a mixture of modern and traditionalentertainment with loud music, largejugs of beer, country flags waving andblunderbuss shotgun start. To completethe effect, the hosts don Tracht dress, withlederhosen for men and dirndl dresses forwomen!Aside from the outside the ropesentertainment the golf is sensational withthe warm weather and wide open parklandstyle course conducive to low scoring. Overthe past five years, the lowest winningtotal score has been 24 under par 264 byDiana Luna in 2011.In the first year of the tournament in 2008,the event champion Amy Yang from SouthKorea set the precedent for low scoringwith a winning total of 267, 21 under par.She also set the course record with a 63in the third round. This was equalled byVirginie Lagoutte Clement in the secondround in 2011.In 2009 it was Jade Schaeffer from Francewho took the honours after a play-offbattle against Spain’s Paula Marti, whilehome favourite Martina Eberl-Ellis, whohas a large role in the tournament’sorganisation ended tied third, her besttournament placing. There were emotional scenes in 2012 whenthe Bavarian announced that it would beher last competitive year, but she willcontinue her role as consultant and allround cheer-leader.England’s Laura Davies proved that shehad the ideal game for the course whenshe collected one of five titles in Germanyduring a tremendous 2010 season.Meanwhile Italian Diana Luna had an extraspecial week in 2011 when she becamethe first Ladies European Tour player in 34years to win a 72-hole tournament withoutrecording a single bogey! It was French player Anne-Lise Caudalwho emerged the victor in 2012 after shedefeated Davies with a birdie at the secondextra hole of a sudden-death play-off.Both players began the final round twostrokes behind the third round leader andended tied on 13 under par. In the play-off,Davies’s birdie putt from four metres felljust short and low of the hole, beforeCaudal made a three-metre birdie putt onthe 519 yard par-five 18th hole, raising herarms into the air in jubilation at collectingher second LET title and first in four yearssince the 2008 Portugal Ladies Open.Almost lost for words, Caudal’s reactionwas: “I can’t believe it; a lot of emotion!”Meanwhile Davies looked devastated asshe pondered the loss on a nearby golfbuggy and commented: “It’s a cruel playoffto lose really, because not only do you losethe money, you lose the sub prize of a carwhich is very unusual on the European Tourso for whoever wins this tournament, it’s areally special win. It’s like a double hit, butAnne-Lise deserves it.”So will the tradition of a new winner eachyear continue? Tournament organiserswould love to see a German winner andCaroline Masson, Sandra Gal and AnjaMonke are clear candidates, as are LETrookies Nina Holleder, Leigh Whittaker,Ann-Kathrin Lindner and Isabell Gabsa.Masson had an incredible season in 2012collecting her first LET title at the SouthAfrican Women’s Open in July and finishingsecond on the ISPS Handa Order of Meritafter six additional top ten finishes duringthe season, including four second places,in Slovakia, Switzerland, Spain and China. With The Solheim Cup being played inAmerica in August, this will be a keytournament for the Europeans to collectimportant points, which are doubled inSolheim Cup years.Masson led the European Solheim Cupstandings going into 2013 and will bekeen to follow in the footsteps of hercompatriots Elisabeth Esterl and SandraGal who played on the winning Europeanteams in 2003 and 2011 respectively. With The 2015 Solheim Cup taking placeat St Leon Rot in Germany, Masson willbe even keener to gain experience on theteam this year and the UniCredit LadiesGerman Open will give her a fantasticopportunity to show her class. Her careerbest finish in the tournament was tiedfourth in 2011, which she can easilyimprove upon.Whether or not a new winner is crowned, theUniCredit Ladies German Open is guaranteedto provide a wonderful experience for theplayers and public and will give us a taste ofwhat to expect when the country hosts TheSolheim Cup in two years.3233

The 2013 Solheim Cup:Let battle commence!Captains Liselotte Neumann and Meg Mallonare ready for action in Denver, Colorado. The wait is nearly over… the 13th Solheim Cup is almost upon us and while in some waysit seems like only yesterday that Europe staged their brilliant fight back in Ireland, it hasbeen a long time coming, simply because it is such a mouth watering prospect. There is a special feel to the latestinstalment of the biannual Europe versusAmerica clash with Europe being the holdersand the match being held in America. There is the tantalising prospect that CaptainLiselotte Neumann and her team could endEurope’s search for a win on American soiland retain The Solheim Cup at Colorado GolfClub in Parker, a suburb of Denver. Can our ladies emulate the achievements ofthe men who retained the Ryder Cup in suchextraordinary circumstances in Chicago ayear earlier? The over riding feeling after a marvellousweek at Killeen Castle in Ireland is that yes,the gargantuan feat can be achieved if eachand every member of the 12-woman Europeanteam believes strongly enough. The US Team lead the series 8-4 and hasnever lost on home soil, so the experiencedall Swedish trio of Neumann and her vicecaptains Annika Sorenstam and Carin Kochwill have a huge bearing on the outcome.Neumann, a veteran of six Solheim Cups, marked her debut year on the LPGA tour bywinning the US Open way back in 1988. Allthree European captains are world classgolfers and great friends with tremendousexperience of playing in The Solheim Cup,having played a combined total of 18 times. The Swedish trio featured in the winningEuropean team of 2000, while Sorenstam andKoch proved to be a great combination assuccessful foursomes and four ball partners2002 and then again when they won theirfoursomes match together in 2003. It willtake all of their experience and guile to winthis time in Colorado. However, if anyone can,it is those three. Standing in between themand the Cup will be US Captain Meg Mallon, one of the most respected and popularAmerican players and a former vice captain in2009, who sank the winning putt for the USteam in 2005.She has chosen the patriotic Dottie Pepperas one of her vice captains. Pepper wasa mainstay of the American team whichdominated the early contests in the 1990sand since retiring from the LPGA in 2004, shehas worked as a regular commentator for TheGolf Channel, with an extensive knowledgeof the US golfers, which could help theAmerican team. The fact that Pepper slipped up and calledthe American team ‘Choking freaking dogs’when she thought that The Golf Channel hadcut to a commercial during live coverage ofThe 2007 Solheim Cup in Halmstad, Sweden, will have zero impact on the matches fromAugust 16-18 according to Captain Mallon. The ‘Dottie’ she knows bleeds red, white andblue and US team standout Paula Creamer haseven said that she’s looking forward to pickingher brain on how it is to be so competitiveand feisty and learn from her. It will be aninteresting team room! It will also be intriguingto see who comes out on top in the captaincystakes, but ultimately the performance of the12 players on each team will decide the result. Both teams will be announced on Sunday4th August after the conclusion of the RicohWomen’s British Open at the Old Course in StAndrews, Scotland. The fourth major championship of the seasonwill serve as the final chance for Americanand European players to earn points for The2013 Solheim Cup after two years of battlingfor a place amongst the top 24 players fromEurope and America and both Captains willbe on hand to announce their teams onSunday evening.5051

St Andrews, the Home of Golf, will bea fitting location as it hosts its secondRicoh Women’s British Open. It wasthe site of former world number oneLorena Ochoa’s first major triumph in2007 before she retired fromthe game.“It is great and very fitting that I willannounce the European Solheim CupTeam at St. Andrews, the Home ofGolf, after the completion of the RicohWomen’s British Open,” said Neumann.Mallon said of St. Andrews: “It’s oneof my favourite places to play on theplanet. Seeing the tournament finishthere and having the teams finalisedthere will be very special. It’s goingto be an intense hour or so around thefinish of the tournament.”Players earn points for top-20 finishesat official LPGA Tour events, and onlyU.S.-born players are eligible for theU.S. team. U.S. players began earningpoints for the 2013 Solheim Cup atthe 2011 CN Canadian Women’s Open, and all players will earn 1.5 times thepoints in 2013, with points doubledat majors. The top eight players inthe U.S. Solheim Cup standings willautomatically qualify for the team, two more will qualify based on theirposition in the Rolex Women’s WorldGolf Rankings, and Mallon will selectthe final two team members. On the Ladies European Tour, pointshave been available since the 2011Lacoste Ladies Open de France.Four players will qualify through theEuropean Solheim Cup points, fourmore through their Rolex ranking andthe final four will be captain’s picksby Neumann. While it’s too early to guess at thepicks, it is almost certain that SuzannPettersen will line up in Colorado. The feisty Norwegian who was ateam leader at Killeen Castle in 2011,inspiring the European team fightback after a pep talk with CarolineHedwall and Azahara Munoz on a golfbuggy after a weather delay. The highest ranked European player,Pettersen earned three pointsincluding a crucial singles victoryin the third last match on Sunday. One down with three holes to play,Pettersen birdied the last threeholes to earn a one-hole victoryover Michelle Wie. However, it washer words which were so powerfuland inspired the two young rookies,Caroline Hedwall and Azahara Munoz,in the last two singles matches. In the second last singles, CarolineHedwall, two down two to play againstRyann O’Toole, won the last two holesfor a vital half point. Azahara Munozthen had the honour of clinching thevital point in the final match with aone-hole win over Angela Stanford. BothMunoz and Hedwall must be prospectsfor selection this year along with theever reliable Catriona Matthew. On the American side, Stacy Lewis,Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer andAngela Stanford look to be shoe-ins,while experienced Solheim Cup starsMorgan Pressel and Michelle Wie willbe hoping to secure their spots withimproved results this season. In addition to the star studded list ofplayers competing, almost anyonewho is anyone in the world of golfon both sides of the Atlantic willbe there. Former European captainssuch as Alison Nicholas, CatrinNilsmark, Dale Reid, Pia Nilssonand Mickey Walker are likely to becheering on the teams along withpast US Captains such as NancyLopez, Beth Daniel, Rosie Jones andPattie Sheehan. The American fans’ support will roararound the Rocky Mountains andEurope may need to employ winningCaptain Alison Nicholas’ tacticsif they are to be successful. In1997 the diminutive English playerpulled off one of the great Europeanvictories when she went head tohead against the home favouriteNancy Lopez to clinch the USWomen’s Open.“I used to pretend they wereshouting for me! In fact, I used thecrowd as a great motivational tool.In the end, they didn’t bother me atall”, revealed Nicholas, the captainin 2009 and 2011. “Obviously I wasup against their great favourite butevery time there was a cheer I saidto myself it was for me!”The chants of ‘USA, All The Way’,will only be silenced if Europe canwin the Cup and fitness could provea key factor in Denver, known as theMile High City because it truly is amile above sea level. With its inland location on the HighPlains in the south western UnitedStates, Denver has more than 300days of sunshine a year. The climate, and closeness to the mountains, earned Denver a reputation as anactive, outdoor oriented city. Forinstance, many residents spend thewinter skiing and in summer theygo hiking, climbing, kayaking andcamping. It also means that touristscan easily take advantage of oneday excursions to the gold rushtowns in the Rocky Mountains tospend time shopping, exploring andtaking in the amazing scenery.Staged within some of the moststunning landscape in America, the Bill Coore and Ben Crenshawdesigned Colorado Golf Club, whichopened in 2007, will be a fabulousvenue to showcase the talent ofEurope and America and crowdstotalling around 100,000 areexpected over the three days. This match will be watched bymillions all over the world ontelevision and with Sky Sports’ livecoverage UK based fans of women’sgolf will not miss a shot from thefirst tee until the last putt. While the question on everyone’slips will be: ‘Can Europe win forthe first time in America?’ there’s afirst time for everything a messageEuropean Solheim Cup captainLiselotte Neumann might want torelay to her team on the eve of the2013 tournament. This will be the 13th edition ofthe Solheim Cup and, one way oranother, it’ll be unlucky for some butfor the next few months Neumannwill have designs only on makinghistory for Europe.5253

Kinesis Personal is the version designedspecifically for the home. How does Kinesis Personal benefitwomen in general? (e.g. As analternative to lifting weights?)Instead of the body following the machine,Kinesis follows the body, allowing for freerange of movement with no compromise to theresistance load. In effect, Kinesis Personalfuses aerobic and anaerobic exercise. It’s notpumping iron, running miles or doing yoga. It’s easyto set up, and suits all levels of ability. Thereare many resources available, even coursesspecifically designed to improve golfingtechnique and strength.Different muscles can be trained by simplychanging the exercise position. The FullGravity technology allows the handles toautomatically adapt to each user size, withoutany required adjustment. It really encourages use of the often talkedabout core muscles – the central part of yourbody and all related spine-stabilising muscles. The golf swing requires a great deal ofathleticism from a golfer’s body at any level.A golfer needs a whole host of attributes;strength, power, flexibility, balance, corestability, muscular endurance, co-ordination,mobility, good body awareness and of coursetechnique.Through training and conditioning a golfer candevelop and improve these physical attributesto better their golf specific fitness, theiroverall game and also reduce their risk of injury. In order to improve performance in any sporttraining must be specific to the demands ofthe game involved and golf is no different. Therefore, Technogym have, in conjunctionwith The PGA, designed a general conditioningprogramme which addresses the key areas ofimportance specific to the game of golf andthe golf swing:• Flexibility and stability• Core strengthening• Rotation• Lower body strength, power and mobility• Upper body mobility and stabilityvisit www.technogym.com for moreinformation.67

PuttingFeel like you’ve done everything you can to lower your handicapbut it’s just not happening? Two-time Ladies European Tourtournament champion Carly Booth from Scotland talks us throughher approach to the key aspects of the game. It’s making sure that putter face is flat on the ground and for me that’sfeeling my hands a little bit lower at address.34Once I’ve done that it’s focusing on a spot on the ball and hitting that spotand then looking.I am trying to get the same tempo on the green, no matter what length ofputt. I have the same tempo throughout.1 2The set-up for me, first of all, I use the line on the ball to help my putter faceline up with the line on the ball.685I’m working on keeping my head still by finding a spot on the ball and reallyfocusing on that. It doesn’t matter what part of the ball, probably better tobe top or back. I try to keep the putting stroke the same on the way backand the way through. I keep it the same tempo throughout the putt, a nicetempo back and the same tempo through towards the hole.6I probably move the putter head ever so slightly in to in, but in to in orstraight, as long as you see the line on the ball rolling straight towards thehole you know you’ve hit a correct putt.69

THE short BUNKER SHOTGet Back Intothe Swingof Things1For a short bunker, for me, it’s all about feel. For set-up, the ball is forward, the stance is open, the club face is open and you swing across the line ofyour feet. You just have to try and picture your shot before you hit it; try andimagine the shot you want to play.2My feet are always slightly open, maybe 45 degrees at most. I set up like adriver with the ball at the left heel. Our specialists provideexpert management for allorthopaedic and sports relatedconditions, including:Hand and Wrist, Hip, Knee, Groin,Shoulder, and Spinal injuriesCall ourteam todayThe swing depends on the distance but I think I’m a little wristy in thebunkers. I’m an aggressive bunker player so I tend to be quite speedythrough the ball.3It’s like a touch of sand before the ball but just focus on the very back ofthe ball.470www.thewellingtonhospital.com0203 627 4660

THE long BUNKER SHOTI think the key aspect of hitting a long bunker shot is keeping your bodystill as long as possible. You just want to touch the sand. You want thecleanest strike you can get to ensure you get the ball coming out of thebunker and flying the correct distance.12It’s very easy to catch a bunker shot fat so that’s why keeping your body stillis very important, so you’re not going to come down on it. You’re almost goingto sweep the shot. I put the ball normal to forward in the stance. If the bunkerhas a lip, you want to get the height as soon as possible so you put the ballslightly forwards in the stance.Sometimes it’s better to club it down, aim for the front of the green andtwo-putt from there or chip and putt from there.Carly’s Top Tip!"I’ve played with a lot ofamateurs and there area million tips I could give. You need to try and turn!Sometimes it’s all arms sotry and turn the body. It’slike a one motion shot."5 6I would hit a five or a three-wood as long as the lip is not going tobother me.3The most important thing is to get the ball out of the bunker and from thereyou can make up and down.4There are times when it can be a bit risky to take a six-iron when there isdecent sized lip. Maybe a six is the right distance to the hole but if you don’tcatch it correctly you could hit the lip so you could be a lot worse off.7273

Hazel Irvine is one of the most recognisable sporting presenters in the United Kingdom who playeda key role in the BBC’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games.Over a 21 year career in broadcasting she hascovered sporting events from The Summerand Winter Olympics to Football World Cups,Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon, WorldSnooker Championships as well as multiplegolf tournaments such as The Masters, OpenChampionship and The Solheim Cup.Speaking ahead of a packed 2013 season,Hazel discussed her incredible broadcastingcareer and lifelong passion for the gameof golf.Hazel: You were born and educated in theHome of Golf: St Andrews. How much hasthe game been a part of your life? It’s pretty much in my blood when youconsider I was born in St. Andrews and wentback to study there at the university for fouryears! These days my work takes me backon a number of occasions and every time Ireturn it’s a thrill both professionally andpersonally. Clearly, I have great memoriesfrom my Uni days where I met my best friends.Indeed, around every street corner there isa memory for me which is associated with atime half-my-life ago. Also in a professionalsense, it’s where some of my earliest sportingmemories were formed through watchingthe Open. I’ve also galloped around the OldCourse as a spectator many times and thesedays, I’m involved in bringing the pictures toeveryone else. I led the TV presentation in StAndrews the year Louis Oosthuizen won theJug and was in the chair when Lorena Ochoabecame the first woman professional to winan event at the Home of Golf. That was a veryspecial and significant week. So there aresome amazing milestones, both professionaland personal, wrapped up in St Andrewsand to think about going back there in 2013absolutely thrilling.Who are your golfing heroes? That’s easy! Nancy Lopez and SeveBallesteros. Those two really formed a lotof my early golfing memories. Nancy Lopezwas an icon for me from a very early age. When she was coming on the scene in 1977I was 10 or 11 and starting the game aboutthen. A bit later Seve came on the scenewith an incredible freshness of talent. Forme, Nancy was a really force of nature andI had the great privilege of interviewing herwhen I was in the early part of my workinglife – boy, was I nervous! It was a programmefor Five Live called “Playing Through” andit touched on the external events that hadshaped certain people’s careers and impingedupon the decisions they made. Nancy’s lifeis obviously very interesting especially withthe early tragedy of losing her Mum and thenheading, almost immediately thereafter, on tothe LPGA tour. There, of course, she won thatincredible number of tournies in a row fromthe get-go. I just thought she was the mostamazing breath of fresh air. I guess in a waythat sort of freshness was mirrored by theteenage Seve. I just loved the spirit and theattitude they both had.Sandy Lyle also made a big impression on me.When he won the Open at Royal St George’s in’85, I was actually helping to run St AndrewsUni’s golf holiday programme that summer.I remember so vividly the final round andcelebrating in the town that day. Believe it ornot, my friends and I got up and watched theSaltire being hoisted in his honour at the OldCourse Hotel as the sun rose the followingmorning! But so many golfers have shapedmy love of the game and those are just a fewof them.Bespoke glazing solutionsin timber aluminium & compositeKloeber’s advanced glazing solutions are available in bespoke or set sizes, with low U values and double or triple glazing options. Hazel has a lot of time for Ryder Cup hero Ian PoulterWho has been the best interviewee andwhy?Probably the one I mentioned with NancyLopez. We headed out to Delaware to theLPGA Championship and had managed tosecure about 40 minutes of her time. I’dhad to do a lot of background research toundertake such an in-depth interview asthis one and we knew her story intimatelyby the time she actually sat down in thechair. But this was also a great opportunityfor me, on a personal level, to ask hersome of the questions I’d always wantedto since I was a little girl. I think it waspretty clear to her from the outset thatwe had done an awful lot of homework soshe immediately relaxed and several timesshe said, ‘Wow, what a question! I don’tknow how to answer that!’ At the end of it,she said, ‘I just want to thank you. I really, really enjoyed that,’ which, of course,is just the most amazing reward youcan have on our side of the microphone! Then she sat there for another half anhour and chewed the fat with us. It wasjust amazing! We came away thinking,‘She’s marvellous, isn’t she?’ Then, abouta year later she came across to play inthe Women’s Open at Sunningdale andI remember walking the course during apractice round with my co-commentatorBev Lewis. She said, ‘That’s Nancy Lopezup ahead,’ and I thought, ‘I wonder if she’llremember.’ Well, she caught sight of usand immediately came across and said‘Hello Hazel, how nice to see you!’ I wasjust absolutely blown away it!Nick Price was always a favouriteinterviewee for me too. No matter what youask him, he’ll always give you a consideredand insightful answer. I really have a lot oftime for Nick.Amongst the current crop I’m pleased tosay that I enjoy speaking to most of theguys and the girls. I don’t see the womenas much as I see the men because of ourbroadcasting schedules, but the BritishWomen’s Open remains one of my mostfavourite events each year. You’re alwaysguaranteed a very good interview withthese women because they appreciateand understand the value of the coverageand the value of promoting themselvesand their sport. I’m also very lucky to workon events like The Masters and the OpenChampionship. I’ve spent a lot of time doingpost-round interviews over the years but it’salso a real treat when I get the chance totalk to the players live in our studio for 5 or6 minutes in a more relaxed setting.Standout interviewees from the currentcrop would include Ernie Els, always a joyto interview, Rory, always fresh and honest;I’ve a lot of time for Ian Poulter, LeeWestwood, very honest, self-deprecatingand humorous. Luke Donald: totallygenuine and a real gentleman. Isn’t itgreat that so many of these guys are fromour shores? We’ve got an embarrassmentof riches right now so it’s a special time tobe involved in golf. How often do you get to play golf?I’ve been very lapse about the whole thingfor one very good, but very small, reason:my daughter, who’s nearly four. I figure thathaving played golf since I was nine or ten, toa reasonable standard, I won’t lose my gamecompletely. Visits to the course are sadly fewand far between right now, although I do getto the driving range. But, frankly, if I’m notworking, or preparing to work, then my timeis devoted to our daughter. My husband andI have already given her a wee rescue clubwhich she swishes about and we’re trying toencourage her all we can. When she gets toschool, I’ll have a bit more time to play again!Would you like to play golf withyour daughter one day? That would be a real ambitionbecause I think it’s something we canall do as a family and it’s somethingthat I have great memories of as achild with my family. Golf is not justa sporting education. It’s very much acharacter-building experience as welland you learn a lot about yourself, your strengths and your weaknesseswhen you learn golf. I think it wouldbe a very handy thing for my daughterto learn for many reasons. You have presented at everysummer Olympics bar one since1988. What was your favouritemoment from London 2012?It is amazing when I think back atit all. The Olympics have given methe most amazing chances to traveland it’s been a huge privilege tohave been to 12 Games, summer andwinter. London was the 12th andobviously one of the very best therehas ever been. It was magnificent andI’m sitting here with a framed pictureon my wall of various highlights fromlast July and August. If you ask anypresenter what was their favouritemoment they’ll probably default toan occasion where they were liveand presenting a programme onair. It’s the same for me. The firstThursday afternoon, in a 90 minutespell, Team GB got the Canoe Slalomgold and silver, a Shooting gold forPeter Wilson and a superb judo silverfor Gemma Gibbons. Absolutelyextraordinary! It was one of the mostexciting afternoons I have ever hadin any television studio any place, anywhere, any time. The wholeproduction team was just buzzing! Iwas also on shift when the Brownleebrothers won their gold and bronze. That, too, was a cherished moment. And on Super Saturday night, whenMo and Jess and Greg Rutherfordwon their golds, I was in my hotelroom trying to prepare for a very earlymorning breakfast shift the next day.I remember trying to peel myself offthe ceiling to try and get some sleepbecause I was up at 3.30 the nextmorning! However, for me, the thing thatloomed largest in the build-up to theGames was the Opening Ceremonyand it is that night that will live withme forever. I was commentating onit alongside Huw Edwards and theresearch for months beforehandhad been a gargantuan task, whatwith 205 nations to talk about in theAthletes Parade. But all the work andthe worry about the responsibilitywas worth it when I think back tomoments like the forging of theOlympic rings during that incredibleIndustrial Revolution scene. Then,Thomas Heatherwick’s remarkablybeautiful cauldron and its idea ofbringing together all of these nationsin such an elemental, intense butfleeing moment of time. It was reallyinspired. I don’t think that OlympicCauldron will ever be beaten forbeauty and ambition. Those are thethings that I will cherish.Do you feel that Team GB can toptheir haul of 65 medals in Rio in2016?I think they will. With the governmenthaving guaranteed elite sport fundingat the same level going into the nextRio cycle, I don’t think the ambitionsof UK Sport and the British OlympicAssociation will dim whatsoever. I’mnot sure whether they think they cantrump 29 gold medals but I wouldexpect they’ll be targeting just asmany medals in total. I don’t thinkthey will back off at all, which is aremarkable thought in itself, is itnot? You might think that becausewe had “home advantage” in London,we’ll never have it so good again, butI have had the pleasure of workingwith people within UK Sport for someyears and they are an extremelyimpressive bunch of people. Ourcoaching system for elite sport isnow the envy of the world. We havesuperb coaches in place, we havesuperb systems in place and I don’tthink they’ll back off one little bitnow. Perhaps we may not top Londonin terms of gold medal performancesbut you can bet that it will still rainmedals in Rio and, who knows, wecould get a few in Sochi next year.76Hazel describes Lee Westwood as, ‘very honest,self-deprecating and humorous’ 77

MotoringDiscover a newdriving experienceNancy Lopez was an icon for Hazel from an early ageWhat does this mean for golf going into the Summer OlympicGames in 2016?Isn’t it exciting! I think it’s marvellous. This will be quite anopportunity, just as it was when tennis was re-introduced, forsome of the greatest sportsmen and women in the world to takepart a multi-sport environment for the first time. That Olympicexperience could be so valuable to them – just look at what itdid for Andy Murray last summer. It’ll be interesting to see howmany countries will send golfers to take part in the Olympicsin Rio and to watch how many take part thereafter in Gamesbeyond Brazil. I also think that it’s great that the men’s andwomen’s events have equal billing at the Olympics. They’ll takepart, side by side, and that is another very important statementnot just for women’s golf, but for the whole game generally. Iwelcome it.Do you think it will raise the profile of women golfers?I think it will. It’s a good showcase and it may also underlinejust how far women’s professional golf has come. Golf is nowa positive, extremely viable and rewarding career for a lot offorward-thinking young women. It is a career. And as a workingmother, myself, it’s great to see that it’s a career that can nowoffer some longevity. You see a lot of mothers on the tour now;they’ve got crèche and childcare facilities in place and a lotof infrastructure supporting these women in sport. It’s hardto juggle things when you’re a working mother but I’m veryimpressed at the growing opportunities that golf affords towomen right across the age ranges now. There are a bamboozling number ofdifferent cars to choose from in the world, each offering their own benefits and eachwith their own ‘va va voom’ appeal. Thereare bubble cars, luxury cars, sports cars, grand tourers, convertibles, mini MPVs,large MPVs and SUVs, to name just a few.And between them they answer nearlyevery conceivable need, from those whowant more space, to those who want betterfuel consumption, to those who feel theneed for speed. There’s a car out there foreveryone, choosing the right one for youthough is never that easy.Cars have come a long way since Karl Benzunveiled the first gas-powered car in thelate 1800s. Each year manufacturers revealclever new designs and gadgets that keepour driving experience moving forward. Thisyear looks set to be no different with manyfocusing on new technology. Self-drivingtechnology, parking guidance and lanedeparture warnings are just some of thosethat are expected to feature in cars moreand more this year, and the competitionto differentiate one car from the next isexpected to be fierce. We have pickedthree that are at the forefront of all thisinnovation and change: the Lexus RX, thenew Honda CR-V and the Peugeot RCZ.As you get into the Lexus RX, the steeringwheel extends to meet you and the driver’sseat moves into place. How’s that foran impressive opener. Futuristic designis at the heart of this car, and technicaladvances combine with impressive insidespace and plush upholstery throughout. No less than ten airbags and seatbelt pretensionershelp to protect passengers andthe driver, plus a Pre-Crash Safety systemnot only warns of any potential hazards, but will also actually help take evasiveaction if necessary. Long before any driveris even allowed to take the car for a testride though, each new RX is put througha series of stringent tests that includespending time in a storm chamber thatsimulates the ferocity of a natural typhoon. It goes without saying the Lexus RX ismade for all conditions.First impressions count, and that iscertainly the case with the new-lookPeugeot RCZ unveiled at the Paris MotorShow to much applause. Coupes are allabout style and the RCZ delivers that inabundance. Auto Express described theRCZ when it first came out as “classleadingfor mid-corner poise and stability,as well as responsive steering. Great tolook at and just as impressive to drive”.The latest version has a new distinctivenose with a front grille that’s split into twoparts, with the lower wider wing-shapedintake having daytime running lights in itsouter edges. Add in some angular, modernlookingheadlights and the RCZ is a realhead turner. The RCZ is available in Sportor GT spec. And despite the incredibleoutput of more than 160bhp per litre, technical advances means CO2 emissionsare pegged at just 155g/km.The third of our shortlist is the Honda CR-V.Although it is classified as an SUV, andhas the boot and inside space to warrantthat, it drives more like a road car, thanks tosome painstaking engineering. As well asbrake-force distribution, electronic stabilityprogram, traction control, trailer stabilitycontrol and emergency-stop braking, there’s also optional active cruise controland a lane-keeping assistant. What Carmagazine described it as having “masses ofspace, great versatility and relaxed drivingmanners. Add in robust build quality, andyou’re looking at a very accomplishedfamily car”.Technology has infiltrated every otheraspect of our daily lives, and technologyis what is driving good car design. But justlike anything else, there are good designsand bad ones. We believe these three areshining examples of how to do it well.I know these are straightened times in financial terms but evenso, there’s clearly a lot of growth in the women’s game whenyou look at the LET, the LGPA and the Far Eastern andAustralasian tours. Things seem to be positive.7879

The latestgeneration of the car, launched in2012, brings cutting-edge styling tothe SUV market, and features theLexus signature spindle grille for animposing face on the road.On board, RX is finished to the higheststandards, with a luxurious cabinfinished in premium leather, brushedmetal and chrome detailing. Newtechnology includes a revised satellitenavigation system, operated using anintuitive remote touch interface. But RX doesn’t just deliver luxuriousstyle and performance. It also givesdrivers significant savings on runningcosts. So significant it could pay fora year’s membership at your localgolf course. When compared to other premiumSUVs, RX can save drivers up to£10,424 in tax over three years. Thanks to a CO2 emissions figure ofjust 145g/km, the car qualifies forBenefit In Kind company car tax of 21per cent. That’s more than enough topay for your membership, and maybeeven indulge in a new set of clubs.Tax costs are not the only area wheredrivers can save by choosing RX 450h.Equipped with Lexus Hybrid Drive, thecar returns astonishing fuel economyof 44.8 mpg on the combined cycle, saving more money at the pumps. Thisfuel economy doesn’t compromiseperformance; RX 450h is capable ofa 0-60 dash in just 7.8 seconds, and atop speed of 124mph.Lexus Hybrid Drive works byharnessing the power of a 3.5-litreV6 petrol engine with an efficientelectric motor and high performancebattery. GREAT DRIVESTHE NEW PEUGEOT RCZ SPORTS COUPEBY Nat BarnesHow do you like to get your thrills? Death-defying bungee-jumps?Heart-stopping roller coasters? Or something slightly less fearinducing, yet just as exciting – moshing to your favourite band orsimply going on the holiday of a lifetime.RCZ is the first of a new line of ‘Haute Series’cars by Peugeot, designed to be a ‘special’vehicle and identified with letters, rather thanthe traditional numbered sequence with thecharacteristic central ‘0’, like the 208, or 308.Practicality perfect for everyday use isanother mantra of the RCZ, which has agenerous boot volume for its category, with acapacity of 384 litres (a couple of golf clubbags) with the further possibility to foldthe rear seat back to expand the maximumcarrying capacity to 760 litres. The RCZcontinues to be very well specified with arange of trims including cloth and halfleatheroptions on Sport and luxury leatheron GT. Plus, there’s two new body colours tochoose from – Bistre and Moroccan Red.While the standard spec may be full to thebrim, buyers will also be able to personalisetheir RCZ to higher levels than ever before.Choose from a host of alloy wheel designs, three roof arch colours, three different typesof bodywork transfers, and two carbon roofoptions in matt or satin finish. Other add-onsto pick from include a Sports Pack on theSport model with the THP 200 petrol enginethat includes a smaller steering wheel andsporty short-throw gear lever. The 200 THPversion also gets some mild suspensionmodifications to make it more agile andfurther aid its stability when cornering.Developed for the road from a racing classwinningpedigree specification, the circleof development comes full circle from a carthat was also true to its original conceptdesign, from which it was inspired. Adaptedfor competition from 2010 with a 200bhpHDi FAP diesel engine, it has twice won theD1T category (1700 to 2000cc diesel) at theformidable 24 Hours Nürburgring race.In development for 2014 is an even morepowerful, race-bred RCZ ‘R’ that with 260bhpfrom its modest-capacity 1.6-litre engine andit is the most powerful production Peugeotever made and with CO2 emissions ofapproximately 155g/km, it positions RCZ in arange of new high efficiency vehicles. So, the RCZ ‘R’ has a powerful engine, specialsuspension and wheels combined with aTorsen® limited slip differential promisedynamic and effective sensations at a veryhigh level. A special exterior signature andinterior treatment will perfect this versionwith a high level of performance assured tooffer intense driving sensations. From the distinctive double-bubble roof to thedynamic engine performance to the incredibleroad handling – all you need to do is capturethe thrill…When it comes to four wheels, however,Peugeot prescribes the very essence ofthrilling. From the classic 205 GTi to thesleek 307 CC , to the current drop-deadgorgeous RCZ coupé, the iconic lionbadge graces many a car that puts asmile on your face. The RCZ thrills in both style andsubstance, with its sleek silhouette,a state of the art engine combiningdynamic performance, responsivehandling and a superb road-holdingand an iconic double-bubble roof. Thiselegant roofline has evolved from racecars and a recent Peugeot Le Mans racer. The benefits of the design are not justbeautiful, as it divides the air that flowsover the body into two contra-rotatingair flows (vortices) which can also meanthat the rear window stays cleaner. The roofline is dressed with a pair ofdistinctive aluminium roof arches –beautifully crafted by a Company inCheltenham - and with their polishedpure metal finish they are most probablythe largest pieces of ‘automotivedecoration’.The sensual shape of this car, it tends togenerate a response with regular headturningmoments wherever it goes, andthe driving experience matches itsexterior design.8283

AnotherRound WinningPerformanceby HondaBy Richard SimpsonHow do you improve a car that has wonover 140 awards worldwide since it firsttook to the roads in 1995? The answer isnever to put the brakes on innovation andconstantly look for new ways to improve thedriving experience. And that is exactly whatHonda has done in its 4th generation CR-Vmodel. Practicality, refinement and qualityremain at the core in this next chapter ofthe CR-V’s success story, while significantimprovements in efficiency mean lowerrunning costs and fewer CO2 emissionsthan ever before. With five million SUV sales to its name,Honda has real pedigree in its class butis always looking for ways to stay aheadof the field. For the first time the CR-Vis offered with a choice of both two andfour-wheel drive to cater for everyone’sneeds. The hip point of the rear passengerseats has been lowered by a carefullycalculated 38mm for optimum comfort andheadroom, and its one-action 60/40 easyfold down rear seats gives it a Tardis-likeinterior. On the top of the range EX modelsmart keyless entry and start system andpower tailgate are useful standard features. It now offers a whopping 1,669 litres ofboot capacity, with enough room for twomountain bikes and four sets of golf clubs. But it’s not all about the practicalities thatmakes this new generation such a crowdpleaser. The car, which is made in Britain, has a distinctive rugged new look withdeeply sculpted sides and a bolder nosethat gives it an added air of confidence. It also has LED daytime running lightsfitted and LED tail lights for extra sparkle. The length and height of the car hasbeen reduced slightly to make it moreaerodynamic, giving greater fuel efficiency(drag coefficiency is reduced by 6.5%), butalso to make it more manoeuvrable andagile, without compromisinginterior space. The interior of the CR-V oozes quality andhas been cleverly designed to give it afeeling of openness. The position of thewindscreen has been brought forward by60mm, for example, and the size of theengine compartment reduced. The majorcontrols are grouped into two logical areasto make for an intuitive driving environment, with a 5-inch Multi-Information Displaywhich controls the audio, telephone andHDD navigation systems. Also now fitted asstandard is Honda’s acclaimed ECON mode, which optimises throttle response andengine programming for fuel efficiency, andthe innovative Eco Assist system, whichadvises drivers on how their driving style isimpacting fuel economy. For the team behind the new design, function though was as important asform. So beneath that striking exterior liea host of new technologies that reduceengine friction and improve efficiency. TheCR-V’s 2.0 litre i-VTEC petrol engine andthe 2.2 litre i-DTEC version both benefitfrom intelligent optimization, which incombination with Idle Stop technology, has improved fuel efficiency and cut CO2emissions by 12%. The Real Time AWDsystem is lighter and offers faster responsetime than before and cuts internal frictionby 59%. The system can also detect whenthe new CR-V is climbing a hill and sendadditional torque to the rear wheels incooperation with the Hill Start Assistfeature; it maintains brake pressure brieflyafter the brake pedal is released, giving thedriver time to accelerate smoothly away.Conversely, a new Hill Descent Control isavailable on automatic models to help itdescend difficult terrain. The new CR-V range also sets anincredibly high bar for safety standards. Itshighly-evolved construction techniques, suspension and braking systems areboosted by a comprehensive range ofelectronic safety systems. An AdvancedDriver Assist System makes its appearanceon the CR-V for the first time employing aCollision Mitigation Braking System, LaneKeeping Assist System and an AdaptiveCruise Control to ensure you keep a safedistance from everything else on theroad. Each system scans the road ahead, applying the brakes or correcting steeringwhilst maintaining a safe distance betweenyou and the car ahead. It also has a VehicleStability Assist with Traction Control,Trailer Stability Assist, Anti-lock brakeswith Emergency Stop System, a WhiplashMitigation System and a next generationMotion-Adaptive Electric Power Steeringthat helps to reduce instability when thedriver is braking hard on road surfaces withdifferent friction coefficients (such as aroad that is only partially covered with dirtor snow). This 4th generation CR-V, with its deepsculpted body lines, has a bold new-lookthat can sit proudly alongside any othersin its class. It combines exceptionalperformance with the agility of a saloon, and its cleverly thought-out designs makefor a great driving experience, be that atrip down to the shops, a holiday in themountains or a drive down to your localgolf club.8485

By Richard SimpsonGolf clothing has come a long way since the days when a long skirt and buttoned up shirt werepart of the standard kit. Preserving one’s modesty far outweighed the importance for any practicalbenefits, and you can’t help but wonder why any ladies would ever have wanted to play golf sincethe tight fitting a la mode blouses back then made it neigh on impossible to take a proper swing ata ball. Today, golf clothing is as much about feeling good as it is about looking good, and fashion hasbecome a hot topic for discussion on fairways the world over8687

Tennis set the trend a few years backfor fusing fashion and sport, with someof the ladies on the pro circuit perhapsbetter known for what they did off courtthan what they did on it: Anna Kournikovasprings to mind. Her status as a fashionicon made her one of the best-knowntennis stars worldwide, despite her neveractually winning a WTA singles title.Golf too now has its stars that add thatextra bit of sparkle to the game and whoshine not just for their brilliant playingskills, but also their style. On the men’sside, a defining moment was when JesperParnevik stepped out at Royal St George’sduring the 2003 Open wearing a pair oftight pink trousers. To say it caused astir is an understatement. On the ladiescircuit Belem Mozo, Beatriz Recari andMaria Verchenova are just some of thenames who have brought ladies golf tothe attention of the non-golf media. Thisclamour for glamour by the media hashelped spark an interest in golf clothingand fashion like never before. One of the designers who has been at thecutting edge of this change in culture andcouture is Chris Mattsson, from AbacusSportswear. She has been the inspirationand one of the driving forces behindthe Swedish company that has seen itgrow, in the last 10 years, from being afledgling local brand to one of the majorplayers on the global stage. Besidesbeing the official clothing partner of theEuropean Tour and the Asian Tour, AbacusSportswear has also been responsible fordressing the European Solheim Cup Teamsince 2007 – one of the highlights of Chris’career. ”Without doubt the best momentwas when the European Team won the cupin our clothes at Killeen Castle in 2011.That beat everything,” she says. ObviouslyChris, along with plenty of others onthis side of the Atlantic, is hoping theexperience is repeated when the twoteams battle it out in Colorado this year. The advances in technical fabrics and thedevelopment of traditional materials havehad a huge impact on the way golf apparelis designed and crafted to handle thevaried weather conditions that are part andparcel of the game. As well as providinghigher levels of functionality, these newfibres and textiles also offer designersthe freedom to be a bit more expressive inhow garments look. Nowadays, materialsare not only breathable, wind proof andwaterproof, but they are also amazinglystretchy which makes them incrediblypractical and comfortable to wear – a farcry from the unyielding cottons, heavywools and bulky tweeds of former years.Golfers play in all weathers, as Chrisexplains, with each presenting differentchallenges. “While we all like playing inthe sunshine, spending too much time inthe sun can offer up its own problems –particularly with the increasing concernsof skin cancer. This is something we havereally focused on in our latest Spring/Summer collection, creating clothing thatoffers protection against UV rays. We haveused, for example, the natural fibrefound in coconut shells –Cocona® – which contains activecarbon and protects against UVradiation. By combining bamboocarbon and microfibre, wehave successfully wovenanother wonderful fabricthat protects against UV raysand also reduces the risk ofunpleasant perspirationodours. So now you can enjoy the lovely weatherand fully focus your attention on otherthings, like how to get out of the bunker!”Abacus Sportswear has also introduceda patented StretchLite material thatis highly breathable and keeps youcompletely dry, but also, as its namesuggests, is incredibly lightweight andstretchy. This means you can swingunhindered even when it’s pouring down.“Finding solutions that offer suchfreedom of motion is what lies atthe heart of any good golf clothingbrand,” explains Chris. “So it isimportant to listen to the players,to what they want, what they findgood about the clothes and how thegarments are performing… or not.”Fortunately for Chris, she is able toget lots of insights from some of theworld’s best. Abacus Sportswearhas been a partner to England Golf, and to the German, Norwegian andDanish national teams for severalyears. “I listen to what the playershave to say, their comments aboutthe clothes, and find their feedbackreally useful. The input we get fromthe officials we also design for isalso very valuable.” One exampleshe cites is the new jackets for theR&A referees which have “lots ofpockets for all their equipment andparaphernalia. The feedback fromthem and the players has been reallygood, which makes me think we can’tbe doing too bad a job.”There’s little doubt Chris’ loveand passion for what she doesis reflected in the popularity ofher designs. But has this passionfor fashion always been there? She actually started off studyingeconomics because of concerns overwhat the future of an arts careermight bring. The lure of fashion wasjust too great and, thankfully, shetook the plunge to follow her dreams.“My grandmother was a seamstressand my mother a buyer for H&M.Fashion and textiles is in my bloodand I quickly realised that economicsjust wasn’t my cup of tea.” And we’llall drink to that. What does she attribute the brand’ssuccess to? “In terms of our ‘look’, wecombine timeless Scandinavian designwith the highest level of functionality –aspects that have become our trademark. We strive for boldness in colour andexpression, and are not afraid to challengetraditions,” adds Chris. “The success of theabacus® brand stems from our attention todetail. It is in such detail where the qualityof our garments and the love and care ofour craftsmanship really shines through –adding that little bit extra to each item ofclothing we produce.8889

Royal Oak Quartz - 33 mmThis dainty 33 mm-diameter model represents a returnto roots, meaning to the pure aesthetic and powerfullines of the original Royal Oak. It successfully unitesall the design codes that forged the success of theworld’s first prestige sports watch. The case middle, thebezel set with 40 brilliant-cut diamonds, the crown, the bracelet and the folding clasp are all made ofsteel. The subtle interplay of alternating satin-brushedand polished surfaces characterising the first RoyalOak watches accentuate the clear-cut lines of this 33mm model; while the eight hexagonal screws on theoctagonal bezel are in white gold, just as they were onthe original watch in 1972. The case is water-resistantto 50 metres and fitted with a glareproofed sapphirecrystal. The bracelet is seamlessly integrated withthe case and features the collection’s unmistakableaesthetic, characterised by perfectly assembled linksand studs arranged in progressively diminishing order ofsize. This motif is crafted byAudemars Piguet using historical machines accordingto the ramolayé or pounced ornament technique. Thisprocess enables simultaneous cutting of squaresinterspersed with a gridwork pattern of fine grooves. The superimposition of two decorations, which is aunique feature of Royal Oak dials, endows them withincomparable radiance. The discreet applied AP initialsappear just above the logo, leaving space at 12 o’clockfor a double hour-marker inspired by the first Royal Oakwatches launched in 1972.This new 33 mm-diameter Royal Oak houses quartzCalibre 2713 driving hour and minute hands as well as awindow-type date display. This Royal Oak Quartz watch is also available in steelwith a black or white leather strap, or in a pink goldversion with a white or brown rubber strap or a pinkgold bracelet.ADVERTGregory Moreau, founder of the houseValgrine realized his dream by creating themost exceptional putters. ByAndrewMarshallDuring the last decade, golf courses havebeen growing in the Caribbean faster thanthe island’s lush tropical vegetation. FromBarbados to the Bahamas, top-drawer layoutsbear the stamps of noted architects such asRobert Trent Jones, Pete Dye and Tom Fazio. All the key ingredients are here; sugary sand beaches, turquoise waters,cheek-caressing trade winds and golf sunny-side up. No two islands arealike and the mix of cultures and races give the Caribbean a unique style incuisine, music, architecture and language. You can almost choose a golfing destination by your cultural preferences, and with around 50 top-quality layouts, the Caribbean presents a delightfuldilemma. Many courses are linked to luxury resorts where you’re guaranteedthe ultimate beach vacation lifestyle with romantic sunsets, pamperedservice and gourmet dining. Here’s five of the best:JAMAICA - Ritz CarltonPicture this: You are at one of the Caribbean’s most stunninggolf courses, carved out of 600 acres of lush greenery and rollingcountryside, with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea from 16 of the18 holes. Golf clubs, balls, scorecard, tees, beverages and snacks areneatly arranged in your cart as your survey the surrounding landscape. This is the eye-opening 500-metre, par-5 first hole at The White Witchgolf course at Jamaica’s Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort. The par-71, 6,113-metre course was so named by its creators, golfcourse architects Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril, in reference toAnnie Palmer, the notorious ‘White Witch,’ who was mistress of RoseHall Plantation in the early 19th Century on which the course is built. She was purported to be beautiful and beguiling and to have done awaywith three unsuspecting husbands.Says co-designer Rick Baril: “We have tried to create a course that willgive you a different experience each time you play. We have done thatat The White Witch by creating multiple tees throughout. Whereasthe low handicapper might have to carry a yawning ravine to reachthe green, there are also tees allowing the shorter hitter to get thereas well. The topography is unique, making each hole memorable anddistinctive in its own right.”From pewter golf bag tags inscribed with each player’s name, to theelegant dining veranda of the clubhouse, to the luxurious changingrooms and well-trained white-suited caddies called golf “concierges”,everything about the White Witch is decidedly top-drawer.The golf concierges are a unique service offered exclusively at TheWhite Witch, that provides traditional caddie services in addition toother services such as restaurant reservations, ordering flowers forloved ones or making spa appointments. “Their knowledge of the golfcourse includes everything needed to negotiate the gusty winds, drastic elevation changes, and deceptive greens,” says head golfprofessional Mike Cole. “All of our guests needs are attended to,leaving them to just swing the club.”DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Casa De CampoA tempting-trio of Peter Dye designed courses await golfers staying atCasa de Campo- one of the Caribbean’s most luxurious resorts. Dye saidthat he actually only created eleven holes on the Teeth of the Dog, Godcreated the seven skirting the Caribbean Sea. Usually appearing in theworld’s top 100 courses Pete Dye’s masterpiece skirts a jagged, rockycoastline, so close you can feel the salt spray. The first of the coastal holes, the 143-metre 5th, is a par-3 to rememberand one scary looking hole. The only option is to hit the green becauseshort, left or long is definite shark food. The signature holes on theback nine are nos. 15 and 16, a medium length par 4 and long par 3. Indirect contrast to the front nine, these holes are lined along the entireright side by the Caribbean and are elevated above a coral cliff.Inland lies the designer’s clever, lake-studded Links Course, and histhird track, Dye Fore is a 6,943-metre monster that marches along aplateau perched 150-metres above the mesmerising Chavron River. With a collection of forced carries over yawning chasms, plus the speedand severity of many of the putting surfaces, Dye Fore is a real testeven from the front markers.Casa de Campo is so extensive that guests are provided with a mapand golf cart to help them get around. Besides the golf, there’s tennis, clay pigeon shooting, a marina, horseback riding, charter fishing, ninerestaurants and the remarkable Altos de Chavron. Built entirely by handin the 1970s, it’s an exact recreation of a 15th-century Mediterraneanvillage, complete with cobbled streets. A collection of fine restaurantswith enviable settings, add to the plethora of options.142143

BAHAMAS - The Abaco ClubWhen you first glimpse the The Abaco Club’s golf course, nestledin a Garden of Eden setting called Winding Bay on Great AbacoIsland (the biggest of a chain of Bahamian islands known as theAbacos), it provides an unforgettable sight with lush emeraldgreen fairways skirting pristine beaches and the deep-bluebackdrop of ocean. Billed as the world’s first “tropical links” golfcourse, without the sun-drenched weather and swaying palms youcould easily be excused for thinking you’re on a seaside course inIreland or Scotland. This spectacular layout is the centrepiece of a $250 million (U.S)resort built by British tycoon Peter de Savary (and now a Ritz-Carlton managed club), who hired two of the world’s best golfcourse architects, Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie to bring a sliceof Scotland to the tropics. They have incorporated classic linksingredients - swales, humps and hollows, small pot bunkers andundulating greens into the design. Add in the unpredictable natureof coastal winds and you have a demanding test. The gin-clear waters of Winding Bay are in view on the first14 holes, while the final four traverse a coral cliff above theAtlantic. On the 18th tee block, you are greeted by the sound ofwaves crashing against the rocky cliffs and a rolling carpet oflush landscape that stretches from tee to green. For the golfconnoisseur it does not get much better than this. After your round, recount every moment over a frosty beverage ortwo on the veranda of the club’s main restaurant, which overlooksthe bay and golf course, relax in the world-class spa nearby orretreat to one of the 75 tastefully furnished Bahamian cottages.BARBADOS - Sandy LaneThe exclusive Sandy Lane resort is home to two championship golfcourses (and a 9-holer), and the place where Tiger Woods famouslyreserved all 112 rooms when he tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at areported cost of almost $3 million U.S.Like everything at Sandy Lane, the golf courses have been landscapedto a high standard. The Country Club is a parkland course, featuringseveral man-made lakes and some challenging approach shots togreens well protected by water and sand. Holes 6 and 7 are particularlysweet, and it has nothing to do with the fact that plumes of smoke canbe seen rising from a nearby distillery busily converting cane juice intorum, the islanders’ tipple of choice.Sandy Lane’s other course ‘the Green Monkey’ has so far remainedhidden from the golfing public. It’s like the Mona Lisa of golf -enigmatic, untouchable and only available for Sandy Lane guests toplay. Some people will pay any price to play, and stories abound ofpeople tossing their room keys to their caddie after a round.“The vision of the owners,” says course architect Tom Fazio, “was tocreate a place as dramatic as any there is in the world.” Created andsculpted from what was once a working limestone quarry, Fazio slowlybuilds drama through the first eight parkland-style holes, and thenstartles golfers with a rapid descent into an abandoned quarry, where27-metre high coral walls dwarf the fairways. From the remarkable 578-metre 9th where you drive from a high tee toa fairway 150 feet below, bordered by the quarry wall, to the flags thatfeature a green monkey with an extended curled tail that flutters in thebreeze - everything at the Green Monkey is about grandeur and detail. The signature hole, the 206-metre par 3 16th, has become one of theworld’s most photographed golf holes. Players hit down into the oldquarry to a green edged by a massive bunker featuring a grass islandcarved in the shape of a Bajan green monkey, a species introduced tothe island from West Africa more than 350 years ago and the inspirationfor the course name.NEVIS - Four SeasonsNevis - this speck of an island south-east of PuertoRico, was thrust into the forefront of world travelin 1991 when Four Seasons Nevis opened as theCaribbean’s first AAA Five Diamond Resort. Over theyears it has compiled a list of awards and accoladesas lengthy as the dining room wine list.Adding to the appeal of the property is the 18-holechampionship golf course designed by Robert TrentJones Jnr. The 6,080-metre layout is a roller-coasterride along the flanks of a cloud-capped volcano, with dramatic views at every turn. The course windsgently up the slope of Nevis Peak to the signaturehole, the par-5 15th that is set some 150-metresabove sea level with magnificent views of nearby StKitts and neighbouring islands. The hole measuresa whopping 603-metres from the back tees andrequires a 218-plus carry over a dramatic gorge toreach the shallow fairway. The 18th, a straightforward par-4 played towardsthe ocean may well be the best hole on the course. If you time it just right (teeing off around 2.00pm),you can finish holing out on the green with abeautiful sunset cresting the crystal blue water ofthe Caribbean Sea. This is tropical island golf at it’svery best.WHERE TO STAY & PLAYJAMAICARitz Carlton(White Witch)www.ritzcarlton.comwww.whitewitchgolf.comDOMINICAN REPUBLICCasa De Campo(Teeth Of The Dog, Dye Fore & The Links)www.casadecampo.com.doBAHAMASThe Abaco Club & Tropical Links(A Ritz-Carlton Managed Club)www.ritzcarlton.comBARBADOSSandy Lane (The Green Monkey & Country Club)www.sandylane.comNEVISFour Seasons Resort(Robert Trent Jones Jr.championship course)www.fourseasons.com/nevis/144145
