BARINOC ® INOCULANTISO 9001 ISO 14001 ISO/TS 16949

BARINOC ® INOCULANT• Fade resistant inoculant• Used in grey and ductile iron• Very effective in low S grey iron• Positive effect on slag formation in ductile iron• Effective inoculant for alloyed irons such as Ni-resist• Especially effective as a preconditioner or as first step inoculation• High Si inoculants are more effective than low Si inoculantsBarinoc ® inoculants are 67 – 75% Sibased ferroalloys with defined levelsof barium and calcium. The inoculanthas a silver grey crystalline appearanceand it is especially developedfor inoculation of medium to heavysection castings due to its good faderesistance. The combination of bariumand calcium will give such castings theoptimum inoculation effect.Barinoc ® inoculants are produced tothe following chemical specifications:Barinoc ® Barinoc ® 75Silicon 64 – 70% 72 – 77%Barium 2.0 – 3.0%Calcium 1.0 – 2.0%Aluminium 0.8 –1.5%IronBalanceProduction of Barinoc ® InoculantBarinoc ® inoculant is produced atthe Elkem Bremanger plant in Norwayand the Elkem Chicoutimi plant inCanada, using special pro ductionmethods to ensure maximum uniformityof compo sition and structurethroughout the product. Both Elkemplants have ISO 9001 and ISO 14001accreditations, in addition to ISO/TS16949 certificate for Elkem Bremanger.lead to wide variations in compositionsof different particle sizes after crushingand grading. At the Elkem Bremanger and Chicoutimiplants, Barinoc ® in oculant is castinto thin slabs in iron moulds. Thisproduces a very fine structure andavoids any risk of segre gation occurringduring solidification. The compositionof Barinoc ® inoculant is thereforeconsistent over the entire range ofparticle sizes. The phase compositionis shown in Figure 1.Ferrosilicon alloys that contain elementssuch as calcium, barium andaluminium have complex structuresconsisting of a number of intermetalliccompounds. The solidificationtemperatures of these compoundsvary and this can lead to extensivesegregation if the alloy is allowed tocool slowly during casting. Becausesome of these compounds are morebrittle and crush more readily, this canFeSi 2CaSi 2Si Al(Ba,Ca)Si 4Figure 1: Typical phases in Barinoc ® inoculant.Barinoc ® is a registered trademark of Elkem AS.

Advantages of Barinoc ® InoculantBarinoc ® inoculant is an excellentchill remover in both grey and ductileirons. Due to its fading resistance itwill normally be used for medium toheavy section castings, although it isan excellent inoculant also for smallcastings. Barinoc ® inoculant will alsobe the first choice where long pouringtimes are unavoidable.Barinoc ® inoculant has proven to bean effective inoculant for low sulphurgrey iron where other inoculants havelimited effect. The use of Barinoc ® inoculant, addedtogether with the nodulariser in theproduction of ductile iron, has beenshown to change the phase compositionof slags generated during thenodularising process. In this case, slag tends to remain in the ladle. Lessslag will then be transferred fromthe treatment ladle to the autopourunit and further there is a reducedtendency to clogging of filters. Furtherinformation on this is given in ElkemTechnical Information Sheet No. 24.Barinoc ® inoculant is a very effectivepreconditioner in both grey and ductileirons. Also, as a first step inoculantin a two step inoculation process,Barinoc ® inoculant is the preferredinoculant and gives maximum effect inconjunction with a carefully selectedsecond stage inoculant. Specialistadvice on the best combinations ofinoculants should be sought from yourElkem representative. Compared toSi/Ca- based inoculants the additionof Barinoc ® inoculant can normally bereduced by 20 – 50%.Barinoc ® inoculant helps to reducenodule count and size variations betweenthin and thick section castings,as demonstrated in Figure 2.Figure 2: Comparison of micro structure in thin (6 mm, top) andthick (20 mm, bottom) sections withBarinoc ® inoculant. Application of Barinoc ® InoculantBarinoc ® inoculant can be used bothas ladle and stream inoculant. Additionin the ladle will for grey iron normallybe 0.2 – 0.4% and for ductile iron0.3 – 0.5%.When added to the stream the additionrate will be 0.05 – 0.15% in greyiron and 0.1 – 0.25% in ductile iron.Used as a first step inoculation oras a preconditio ner, the additionwill the addition will be in the range0.1 – 0.5% for both grey and ductileirons. When it is used as a slag conditionerthe addition will be 0.05 – 0.1%added together with the nodulariser.Physical DataStandard SizesStandard PackingApparent Density 3.1– 3.7 g/cm 3In-stream/MSI0.2 – 0.7 mmBig Bag1050 kg on palletBulk Density 1.75 – 2.0 g/cm 3Small Ladle0.7 – 2 mmBig Bag1500 kg on palletMelting Range1300 –1325 °C (liq)Larger Ladle2 – 6 mmBig Bag500 kg on pallet1208 °C (sol)Paper Bag25 kg on palletSteel Drum200 and 220 kgElkem ASFoundry ProductsHoffsveien 65BP.O.
