F<strong>in</strong>al, January 3 2011surround<strong>in</strong>g neighbourhoods. “Canada’s ambassadors <strong>of</strong> musical diversity”, Sultans <strong>of</strong> Str<strong>in</strong>g, have been nom<strong>in</strong>ated thisyear for a 2010 JUNO Award, and also for Favourite World Music Band at Canadian Music Week’s 2010 Indie Awards.Their brand new CD, Yalla Yalla!, received a triple nom<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canadian Folk Music Awards, w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g InstrumentalGroup <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year. Sultans <strong>of</strong> Str<strong>in</strong>g were also voted Best Variety Act by Festivals & Events Ontario, and just won <strong>the</strong>International Songwrit<strong>in</strong>g Competition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Instrumental category out <strong>of</strong> 15,000 entries. Their performance is madepossible <strong>in</strong> part by a grant <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ontario Arts Council’s National Tour<strong>in</strong>g program.You can be sure that <strong>the</strong>y will encourage participation and movement by <strong>the</strong> younger audience members and that everyonewill f<strong>in</strong>d someth<strong>in</strong>g to connect to <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir stories and music. This free 1.5 hour event will <strong>in</strong>clude a 45 m<strong>in</strong>ute concert,followed by a mural creation art activity and social time, where bannock, fruit and dr<strong>in</strong>ks will be provided (at no charge).Warm Your Spirit with Street Spirits and Artist Director, Andrew BurtonWarm Your Spirits Theatre <strong>Workshop</strong> will take place <strong>the</strong> Connaught Youth Centre (1491 – 17 th Avenue) Friday January 28<strong>from</strong> 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The <strong>in</strong>ternationally-acclaimed Street Spirits Theatre Company actors, lead by Artistic DirectorAndrew Burton, will guide participants through a dynamic act<strong>in</strong>g process where topics such as racism, <strong>in</strong>clusion,multiculturalism and diversity will be tackled. This 5-hour workshop is open to everyone however people with an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>act<strong>in</strong>g may f<strong>in</strong>d it especially engag<strong>in</strong>g although no act<strong>in</strong>g experience is necessary! Normally provided at a cost <strong>of</strong> $200 perparticipant, we are very pleased to provide <strong>the</strong> workshop (and hot lunch) at no cost. Led by <strong>in</strong>ternational performers, Donne Roberts and Tom Landa ( <strong>of</strong> The Paperboys)as well as local musician Neda Jalali, stories and songs will be shared to stimulate conversation about <strong>in</strong>clusion,multiculturalism, diversity and racism. With microphones available to <strong>the</strong> audience, <strong>the</strong>re will be space for those present toexpress <strong>the</strong>ir views as well. This event will <strong>in</strong>clude an open<strong>in</strong>gsong by Leonard Ward, a Cree Elder and Pipe Carrier; performances by David Wilcox and The Paperboys, anda performance by <strong>the</strong> Street Spirits Theatre Company.
