Spotlight on ProjectsWEST SUSSEX COUNCILWASTE ENERGY PLANTDornan Engineering has been awarded the M&E services on a£1bn plus Biffa project for West Sussex County Council.Biffa is to construct an MBT facility next to its Brookhurst Woodlandfill site near Horsham, in the north of the County. The companysaid the new facility will divert up to 80% of the residual waste fromlandfill and will save the Council around £300 million over the life ofthe Contract. It will also significantly reduce the carbon footprint of householdwaste management in the County. Additionally, the mechanicalsorting plant will extract any remaining metals from the waste forrecycling, helping to boost West Sussex’s recycling rates. The mechanically separated biodegradable fraction will be treatedusing anaerobic digestion technology. The resultant biogas willinitially be used to generate renewable energy and may in the futurebe harnessed to produce fuel for vehicles. When operating at fullcapacity the facility will produce up to 3.5 MW of renewable energy, enough to power around 7,000 homes. In addition, the facility’s mechanical sorting plant will produce aRefuse Derived Fuel (RDF). Subject to a joint exercise by Biffa andWest Sussex County Council to find a long-term sustainable marketfor the RDF, it will either be sent to a third party outlet or used tofuel a thermal treatment facility that will produce energy in the formof electricity and heat. Subject to planning and operating consents, the thermal treatment facility would, if required, be constructed atthe Brookhurst Wood site.Dornan Engineering Services was awarded the M&E Servicescontract for this project in August 2011.The Waste to Energy Sector is a new and exciting one for Dornanto enter. We hope to develop relationships with both Biffa & M+WGroup by demonstrating our ability to complete major Industrial6 DORNAN DIGEST JULY - DECEMBER 2011

PeopleDornan Engineering is delighted to announcethat we had been awarded the prestigious‘CPD Accreditation Employer Status’ byEngineers Ireland. This is a significant achievement for the company as the accreditationrecognises good organisational practice in the area of professionaldevelopment for engineers and technical staff and receives theformal backing of the Department of Education & Skills.Throughout the preceding months the CPD committee werecontinually working hard to attain the accreditation. The introductionof our CPD policies and practices, which encourages careersatisfaction and progression through training and acquisition of newskills, was an essential starting point on our route to accreditation. The addition of a new member to the committee James Dougan(Project Engineer for Dornan) further strengthened our crossfunctional committee which is an essential component for thecommunication and implementation of CPD throughout the company. With everyone committed to succeeding, the preparation for the auditwas well under way.On 9th August, representatives from Engineers Ireland conductedan audit into our CPD policies and procedures. It was necessary forthe committee to demonstrate to the panel how we met a set of eightcriteria including our CPD Policy, CPD Committee, PerformanceManagement Systems and Knowledge Sharing Activities. News ofour accreditation success was proudly welcomed throughout thecompany.Managing Director Oliver Lonergan was presented with the CPDAccredited Employer parchment by John Power, Director GeneralEngineers Ireland at the Engineers Ireland Company of the YearAwards (pictured). This year the eventtook place from Thursday 8th - Sunday 11thSeptember.This was the first year that Dornan participatedas a host and despite our race rankings(ahem!), crew members had a fantastic time atsea over the 3 days we were there. In the week of the event, the weather lookedominous with forecasts of rain and grey clouds, which might have made for an interestingregatta. But mother nature looked kindly onus and what we had instead was fine drysunshine days. We had 3 crew groups over theThursday, Friday and Saturday racing days.Amongst them were some veteran sailorsand some novices; with the novices slightlyout numbering the veterans! Nevertheless, allcrew members gave it their all once onboardour yacht the Beaufort Venture. The opening race on Thursday afternoonwas an indication of how we might fair forthe following races- fully engaged and readyfor action to take that number one spot! Wehad a smaller team on the opening day so itwas almost a given that perhaps we may notbe as quick as the other boats in the race.Maybe a lot slower. Ok, so we came last inthe ranking but we all know it’s the taking partthat counts right?! Our other races on thefollowing two days with other crew memberswere just as enviable. We had the enthusiasm, the competitive spirit, the eagerness to try andclinch that number one spot again...but alas,we came last, in the all the races!A special thanks must be given to skipper NickRussell, of Mace. His experience at the helmcoupled with that of our Operations DirectorDerek Duffy meant we remained competitiveand in high spirits. We’ll come back fightingnext year!16 DORNAN DIGEST JULY - DECEMBER 2011
