The information is provided by personnel from ACER (the testdevelopers).

This is NOT a preparation course. The UMAT consortium and its members do not endorse anypreparation courses.Due to limited spaces, parents will not be able to attend this session. To book a seat (bookings essential) click here. After booking a seat, you will be sent emailconfirmation. Please bring a copy of the email confirmation to the information session.http://www.meddent.uwa.edu.au/students/information-session for further informationUMAT Registration opens on 1 April and closes Friday 7 June at 5pm AEST. Registration iscompleted via the webpage http://www.umat.acer.edu.auUMAT will be held on Wednesday 31 July. Students who are interested in applying forundergraduate Medicine or Dentistry interstate will need to register as well as WA students who thinkthey may be eligible for the guaranteed pathway into Medicine at UWA. At present UWA are advisingstudents who will have an estimated ATAR of 99 and are interested in Medicine to sit the UMAT. Inorder to gain entry into the post graduate Doctor of Medicine, they will need to maintain a grade pointaverage of 5.5 which equivalent to 75% and above in each year of their undergraduate degree.Students who aspire to Medicine, but who do not gain an ATAR of 99 can still sit the GAMSAT inorder to be considered for the post graduate course. Science is a recommended pathway (first-yearlevel Chemistry and Biology are recommended, as is Year 12 level Physic) although other degreegraduates can still apply for the Doctor of Medicine. See,http://www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/undergraduate/admission/assured-entry-yr12 for more details.UMAT PREPARATION COURSESThere is no clear evidence that these courses help, and they are not cheap! The price variesdepending on the number of add-on extras you choose. The official word from ACER is: It is possiblethat some commercial preparation courses might provide misleading information or advice tocandidates. Some clients sitting UMAT, have said they benefitted from the coaching course, whilstothers said it didn’t really help that much.If you visit the UMAT preparation sites you will notice that they are offering coaching for interviews aswell as for UMAT. Students should be discouraged from doing the interview coaching. It may work forgraduate entry programmes, but there is well-documented evidence to show that coaching has anegative effect on interview performance for undergraduate entry. A better idea would be for studentsto purchase the books of practice questions available from ACER: http://www.umat.acer.edu.au/ andthen select Practice material.Once students have sat the test, they will need to submit their Prediction of ATAR form to JanineHead in the Counsellors area. This form gives permission for the school to send UWA predictedresults. The UMAT is still very relevant for entry into courses at a variety of Universities these are:The University of Western Australia’s Assured pathway into:Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).A quota of approximately 40 Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) is available for domesticschool leavers for the MD and approximately 5 CSPs are available for domestic school leaverapplicants for the DMD.Selection for the Assured Pathway (High Academic Achievement) will be based on:Performance in UMAT;ATAR or equivalent school-leaving result (minimum ATAR of 99.00 or equivalent required);Interview.

Students gaining entry to the Assured Pathway must complete one of UWA’s five undergraduatebachelor degrees (Arts, Commerce, Design, Philosophy* or Science). Taking up an assured place inthe graduate program is conditional on applicants obtaining a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA)of 5.50 in their initial UWA degree. Applicants wishing to progress to the DMD will also need tosatisfactorily complete a manual dexterity and a spatial awareness admission test at the time ofinterview.New South Wales The University of New South Wales – Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor ofArts, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Optometry Bachelor ofScience.
