This 1941work, which continuesto be assigned reading in western and women’shistory courses, drew high praise from no less keen anobserver <strong>of</strong> the western literary scene than J. Frank Dobiewho considered <strong>Cleaveland</strong>’s memoir to be “not onlythe best book about frontier life on the range ever writtenby a woman, but one <strong>of</strong> the best books concerningrange lands and range people written by anybody.” Withthe publication <strong>of</strong> this biography, readers will gain insightson how this remarkable memoir came to be written.As full as <strong>Cleaveland</strong>’s life on the ranch in theDatil Mountains, it was only a part <strong>of</strong> her existence. Herother life was that <strong>of</strong> a social activist and RepublicanParty supporter, a life centered around her second homein Berkeley, California, and epitomized in her role as theconsummate clubwoman. It is Miller’s contention thatto know and understand <strong>Cleaveland</strong> and her work, it isnecessary to be aware <strong>of</strong> this urban aspect <strong>of</strong> her life.<strong>Cleaveland</strong> was not merely a joiner <strong>of</strong> women’s organizations;rather she was <strong>of</strong>ten an organizer and drivingforce much in demand as a public speaker. Perhaps herlasting achievement as a clubwoman was helping to foundthe California Writer’s Club, an organization that stillexists and honors her memory.By any measure, No <strong>Life</strong> for a Lady was wildlysuccessful. A special Armed Forces Edition sold almost100,000 copies. Such a runaway success can prove less ablessing and more a curse to its author, especially if itcomes with the first book. Unlike novelists such asHarper Lee and Margaret Mitchell, <strong>Cleaveland</strong> did manageto publish a second book, but Satan’s Paradise did notreceive critical acclaim or sales in any way comparable toNo <strong>Life</strong> for a Lady. Miller captures the writer’s angst duringthe long period when she stopped writing, the difficultdecision to return to writing, and the <strong>of</strong>ten painfulprocess <strong>of</strong> revising the manuscript <strong>of</strong> a book everyoneinvolved knew was not going to be as successful as thefirst.76This book is volume 26 in the Oklahoma WesternBiographies series. Volumes in the series do not havescholarly annotation, but the author notes that a fullydocumented version <strong>of</strong> the manuscript is available inthe Darlis A. Miller Papers, Hobson-Huntsinger UniversityArchives in the Archives and Special CollectionsDepartment <strong>of</strong> New Mexico State Library. This slimvolume is gracefully written and richly illustrated. Millerexplores the nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cleaveland</strong>’s difficult marriage toNewton and her relationship with other family members,especially her brother and sister. Miller also discussesthe nature <strong>of</strong> her dealings with editors, publishers,and fellow authors. But this book is also much morethan a conventional bibliography. Miller delves into<strong>Cleaveland</strong>’s creative process with a real appreciation forthe way the writer approached her craft. Now, some fifty years later, theinsider’s view <strong>of</strong> life and values in Atarque is told.Pauline Chávez Bent was born and raised inAtarque. She presents views <strong>of</strong> the community beforeits demise through accounting short vignettes <strong>of</strong> happenings,customs, observations, stories and interviews.She also recounts the history <strong>of</strong> families who settled inthe town and <strong>of</strong> the few institutions serving the communityincluding church, school, post <strong>of</strong>fice and store.Her account is not a linear one told through theyears from the beginning <strong>of</strong> settlement to the abandon-


ment <strong>of</strong> Atarque. Rather it is a reminiscence <strong>of</strong> the village,its people and their lives. She amply documents thehigh value women placed on family and faith and theways in which these values play out in everyday life. Shealso tells <strong>of</strong> the hardships, self-sufficiencies and tragedies<strong>of</strong> life in a remote area <strong>of</strong> western New Mexico asHispanic families try to make a living grazing their sheepand planting their crops and <strong>of</strong> the accommodationsfamilies made to the changing realities <strong>of</strong> a multiculturalenvironment. Ultimately, she is a woman reminiscing,not a male. Thus, her account <strong>of</strong> Atarque does notpresent an in-depth sense <strong>of</strong> how men and boys viewedtheir lives.This book is a must read for those without Hispanicbackgrounds who want to understand what it wasto live in a small Hispanic village at the beginning <strong>of</strong> thelast century. Albuquerque: University <strong>of</strong> New Mexico Press,2009. 978-0-8263-4824-1, $29.95 hardcover, 296 pages,29 halftones, 1 map.Rancher and cowboy Quentin Hulse (1926-2002)had a reputation that extended well beyond the GilaWilderness <strong>of</strong> southwestern New Mexico that he calledhome. Raised in mining towns <strong>of</strong> the southwest untilhis father established a ranch in Canyon Creek, Hulsewas the quiet, iconic Western figure that lived the roughand rowdy life <strong>of</strong> yesteryear. A storyteller, once you gotto know him, he was full <strong>of</strong> observations and histories<strong>of</strong> his family and other characters <strong>of</strong> the Gila.Author Nancy Coggeshall first encounteredHulse in 1991 and visited him a short time later at CanyonCreek. She later lived with him for the last severalyears <strong>of</strong> his life at a home near Reserve. <strong>The</strong>se encountersare the fodder for telling Hulse’s biography, supplementedby interviews with friends and some researchon specific family members or newsworthy incidents—to test the veracity <strong>of</strong> Hulse’s stories.Coggeshall’s personal relationship provides aunique perspective <strong>of</strong> a rural New Mexico rancher, butit also is a factor that gets in the way. <strong>The</strong> first quarter<strong>of</strong> the book or so is a wandering train <strong>of</strong> thought <strong>of</strong>Coggeshall’s perspectives <strong>of</strong> how she met him and herinitial observations. It is enough <strong>of</strong> a distraction that itmay deter some folks from finishing the book or evengetting to the heart <strong>of</strong> the legend—the stories <strong>of</strong> QuentinHulse. Part biography and part history, the final sixtypercent <strong>of</strong> the book actually relates the history <strong>of</strong> CanyonCreek, the Gila at large, and Hulse himself. <strong>The</strong>sestories are loosely organized in topical chapters that havetitles like “Land,” “War,” “Drinking,” “Blizzard,” and“Kissed the Girls.” <strong>The</strong> themes overlap with stories intime but as a whole are generally chronological, concludingwith Hulse’s death and brief assessments <strong>of</strong> the manas are wont to occur at someone’s passing.<strong>The</strong> biographical information and Hulse’s anecdotalstories provide great insight to the nature <strong>of</strong> SouthwesternNew Mexicans <strong>of</strong> the early to mid-twentiethcentury. <strong>The</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ten include a number <strong>of</strong> details <strong>of</strong> namesand places, enough to be received as reliable for purposes<strong>of</strong> research and to be <strong>of</strong> interest to those familiarwith the region or the people. Accessing those stories,though, may be problematic. <strong>The</strong> index is a fair compilation<strong>of</strong> most (not all) <strong>of</strong> the names and places, buttopical references or searches for a particular incidentare difficult, if not impossible. An example <strong>of</strong> the latteris a very compelling story <strong>of</strong> the vigilante “revenge killing”<strong>of</strong> two Mexican sheepherders by members <strong>of</strong>Hulse’s family in the early 1900s after the herders hadambushed and murdered his grandmother. Yet a searchin the index for any terms you could think <strong>of</strong> that mightapply—vigilante, sheepherders, Mexican, murder—yieldsnothing.I fear that while the content is excellent, its valueas a source for research is somewhat compromised dueto the weakness <strong>of</strong> the index and the organization <strong>of</strong>the narrative. Thus, the book largely has to be taken asa whole, on its own merits. On that basis, the wanderingpersonalizations <strong>of</strong> Coggeshall made this, for me, a difficultread. Those with a greater familiarity <strong>of</strong> the regionallandmarks or the Gila Wilderness families or residentswill have more ready access and understanding <strong>of</strong>the contents. If you can make it through everything,though, I think Gila Country Legend does give a thoughtfulportrayal <strong>of</strong> a type <strong>of</strong> cowboy New Mexicans <strong>of</strong> yesteryearthat simply do not exist any longer.Cameron Saffell, DCA77

Gilbert, “I Am the Very Model <strong>of</strong> a ModernMajor-General,” <strong>The</strong> Pirates <strong>of</strong> Penzance<strong>The</strong> characters <strong>of</strong> the Major General Stanley andSir Joseph, the Captain <strong>of</strong> the Queen’s Navy, from thecomic operas <strong>of</strong> Gilbert and Sullivan were some <strong>of</strong> mystrongest impressions during my reading <strong>of</strong> this book.In it, Kevin Adams, Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> History atKent State University, looks at the United States Armyin the western frontier during the same era in which Gilbertand Sullivan were producing their witty satires.Adams’ book methodically renews support for such satires.He sets out his purpose as not so much to write aclassic military history as to look at the culture <strong>of</strong> theUnited States during the Gilded Age using the frontierarmy as a sort <strong>of</strong> laboratory, to open “a new vantagepoint from which to look at longstanding debates overthe meaning <strong>of</strong> immigration, industrialization, and theevolution <strong>of</strong> Gilded Age culture and society.” (p. 10)One <strong>of</strong> the book’s central arguments is that although<strong>of</strong>ficers and enlisted men certainly followed theracist attitudes <strong>of</strong> their society, differences in ethnicitymattered very little among the white men in the army,particularly among the enlisted men. Class divisions weremuch more clearly marked and noticed. In support <strong>of</strong>this thesis Adams presents a mix <strong>of</strong> meticulous analysisand arresting details. Anecdotes from soldiers’ and <strong>of</strong>ficers’memoirs are presented with careful building up<strong>of</strong> contexts. While Adams does extrapolate from individualaccounts, he also takes great care to lay out hispoints and back them up with evidence. If at times herepeats himself it is only a minor distraction and indeedcan serve as a refresher <strong>of</strong> the reader’s memory if workingthe way through the book slowly. For example, thewords “egalitarian” and “communal” appear so frequentlyin describing the world <strong>of</strong> the enlisted men thatAdams seems almost to overstate his case, but the casedoes hold up well to the evidence. Adams is trying to be78thorough and for that, I as a reader can excuse redundancy.<strong>The</strong> main text and the bibliography show his researchto be impressive and ambitious in its extent. Still,some <strong>of</strong> the major sources quickly become evident. Detailsfrom these – individual letters, memoirs and so on– liven up the book considerably. <strong>The</strong>se details are infact what afford the real enjoyment to someone like mewho is not a scholar in military history. Adams is not inthe business <strong>of</strong> painting humorous caricatures, but althoughthe figures he presents studiously lack the fancifulfill-ins that a piece <strong>of</strong> fiction may use they are sometimesall the more amusing for it.<strong>The</strong> book as a whole, together with the author’sparticular discussions on sources, shows practical applicationsto questions that archivists constantly face. Appraisal(whose personal papers are worth keeping, andwhy?), description and reference (how do we alert researchersto the existence <strong>of</strong> helpful sources they mightnot otherwise notice?) are particular parts <strong>of</strong> the archivalmission that bear heavily on the success <strong>of</strong> projectslike this one. It may be my own pr<strong>of</strong>essional perspectivethat brings this to the forefront <strong>of</strong> my mind, but I believethat Adams treats his sources in a way that pointsthese questions out clearly to an engaged reader. Forthat he has this archivist’s appreciation.If a reader engages earnestly with this book thenit will be a rewarding and useful experience. It is notcalculated to gratify romantic curiosity about the WildWest days (on page 9 Adams states: “<strong>The</strong> pages that followcontain very little fighting.”). 79This is an interesting, multi-faceted book withmuch meat on its bones, consisting <strong>of</strong> essays, some longand some short, written by John Baptist Salpointe, Bishop<strong>of</strong> Tucson and second archbishop <strong>of</strong> Santa Fe. Somewere written in Salpointe’s native French, others in English,virtually all are undated. <strong>The</strong> originals are held atthe Fray Angélico Chávez History Library in Santa Fe,collection AC417. <strong>The</strong> three editors have arranged thepapers, had some <strong>of</strong> them translated, worked on chronology,and, above all, provided extensive notes explainingthe text. <strong>The</strong> notes account for Salpointe’s sources,discuss some textual points, and give references to subsequentliterature. <strong>The</strong>y have created a readable and usefultext, with a thorough bibliography (p. 323-361). Thisbook has won a 2011 New Mexico Book award in thecategory <strong>of</strong> History Book—New Mexico Subject.Since much <strong>of</strong> the information in these essays istaken from other written sources or is in need <strong>of</strong> correction,the ethnographic information contained inSalpointe’s accounts is perhaps less useful to the historianthan what these accounts tell us about Salpointe’sattitudes and about the influence <strong>of</strong> contemporaries suchas Adolf Bandelier and Frank Cushing on Salpointe’sattitude about Indians. <strong>The</strong> material in this book alsoprovides a backdrop for studying Salpointe’s own Soldiers<strong>of</strong> the cross: notes on the ecclesiastical history <strong>of</strong> New Mexico,Arizona, and Colorado (1898). .Naturally, there are a few minor difficulties withthe book. <strong>The</strong> index is spotty, and there are occasionswhere one would like more information on a particularanecdote, such as the story <strong>of</strong> Camillo, an older Apachewho wanted to go to hell because the Anglos and Mexicanswho crowded him and his people out everywhereelse did not want to go there (p. 114-116), which has nonote about the source <strong>of</strong> the story or an index entry.More significant, however, are two other flaws.First, there is apparently no numbering <strong>of</strong> the differentessays and fragments, so that it is impossible to tell thesource <strong>of</strong> any given section. <strong>The</strong>re is little discussion <strong>of</strong>the original documents. <strong>The</strong> editors occasionally wovetogether information from two different versions <strong>of</strong> astory (e.g., p. 99, 102), and the reader learns about suchsituations only by reading the “introductions” to the essays.<strong>The</strong> other major problem is stated on p. xii <strong>of</strong> theintroduction, “We found Salpointe’s disrespectful commentstowards native people to be unacceptable and todetract from otherwise valuable descriptions. Consequentlywe have deleted many gratuitous remarks.” Althoughsome <strong>of</strong>fensive comments remain, the action <strong>of</strong>the editors has undoubtedly saved some embarrassmentand stress on the part <strong>of</strong> readers. <strong>The</strong> editors say thatSalpointe modified his attitudes and grew to appreciatenative peoples better over the years, but the bowdlerizingmakes it impossible for the reader to see how thishappened or to what degree. Since some <strong>of</strong> the mostvaluable insights come when a historian is dealing withbeliefs and attitudes that are so different from those <strong>of</strong>the later scholar’s age, a great opportunity has been losthere. More significantly, anyone who wishes to makeserious use <strong>of</strong> Salpointe’s notes will have to redo much<strong>of</strong> the editors’ hard work and consult the original documentsin all their confusion without the help that thisedition/translation could have provided. <strong>The</strong> result isa very interesting book for the serious amateur and animperfect tool for scholars.Laurence S. ISBN-10:0060931906, 256 pages, $5.20A teenage protagonist <strong>of</strong>ten earns a novel thedesignation as a coming-<strong>of</strong>-age story. But Red Sky atMorning <strong>of</strong>fers so much to anyone who ever was a teen,facing for the first time some <strong>of</strong> the realities andresponsibilities <strong>of</strong> life. Full <strong>of</strong> the local color andatmosphere <strong>of</strong> mid-century New Mexico mountaincountry, this book dating from 1968 is very well worth alook.This intimate story <strong>of</strong> a young man’s discovery<strong>of</strong> himself and a small New Mexico mountain townduring World War II serves as an excellent wider view<strong>of</strong> the intersection <strong>of</strong> cultures in New Mexico. JoshArnold had been happily growing up well-to-do in MobileAL, with a good relationship with his ship-builder fatherwho charges him to go with — and watch over — hisSouthern Belle mother to Corazon Sagrado in northernNew Mexico. <strong>The</strong> father has chosen to accept a naval


commission and wants his family out <strong>of</strong> Mobile, withsafety from the war as his expressed motivation. <strong>The</strong>family has had a summer home in New Mexico sinceJosh was very young, but he must now immerse himselfin the town in new ways. Enrolled in the town’s highschool as a senior, Josh encounters differences in cultureand ethnic background as well as great economic andsocial differences. Alcohol abuse and depression fuelhis mother’s deterioration, compounded by the presence<strong>of</strong> Jimbob Buel, a long-time acquaintance who seems tohave made a career <strong>of</strong> being a sour-tempered houseguestJosh doesn’t have the maturity and experience to dealwith for a long time in the story.From the son <strong>of</strong> the local anglo doctor to a pair<strong>of</strong> sex-crazed sisters to the local Mexican sheriff to anartist who works with live nude models, Josh encountersall kinds. His experiences with religious mysticismthrough the transformation after stabbing <strong>of</strong> a local bullyand his devout sister’s tragic encounter with the crazedyoung Mexican who stabbed him provide drama andadventure to the story. <strong>The</strong> couple who act as householdhelp provide Josh stability and wisdom as he tries to liveup to his father’s expectations, and their beautifuldaughter adds a bit <strong>of</strong> love interest from afar.Relationships between his mother and her employeesopens a window on racism for Josh, prompting himeventually to see more clearly what is right, seek help forhis mother, and cope with the death in action <strong>of</strong> hisfather. Seeing his mother safer and more establishedenables him to decide to enlist himself as the book ends.Early in the book we glimpse in person a certainnobility and grace <strong>of</strong> spirit in the father. This sense buildsthroughout the book in his lasting moral presence forJosh, and its true reflection in Josh himself shines throughby the story’s end. Josh’s exposure to an artist’s ability tosee past façade and conceptualize the heart <strong>of</strong> his subjectsinfluences Josh to see more clearly in the clarity <strong>of</strong> NewMexico’s environmental and cultural landscape. Thisoutstanding atmospheric re-creation <strong>of</strong> a mountain townis a window on the physical and social climate, cultures,and style <strong>of</strong> New Mexico.Jane P.
