A SMALL N SCALESprawling steam locomotiveservicing facilities areimpressive additions alongmainline railroads, but whatabout servicing structureson branches or shortlines?They’re easy to model withjust a few buildings.Outpost or Headquarters?On branch lines thesefacilities were outposts thathandled just a few locos.When engines arrived on thedaily train, they wereserviced and inspected, andmoved inside the enginehouse until their return trip.A switcher or two assignedto service area industriessometimes shared thefacility. Helper terminals,where pushers wereserviced, were similar, butwere located at remote areasalong the mainline, allowingpusher engines to remainnear where they wereneeded.On a shortline, the enginehouse at a small terminalmight be the center ofoperations. On some linesthe building was also hometo all car, loco and trackmaintenance operations. Insome cases a desk along theengine house wall, or a smallseparate office, was home toa clerk or even the presidentof the line!A Compact ComplexA small steam locomotiveservicing complex is easy toadd to your railroad. In thediagram, the Wood CoalingTower and 2-Stall EngineHouse are the heart of thefacility. Other buildingsinclude the Yard Office &Shed. The yard office housesmost of the employees forthe area and the shed handlesspare parts and supplies.Facilities of this sizetypically wouldn’t havemechanical ash handlingequipment. Instead, asheswere frequently dumped onthe ground near a portableconveyor or above a gondolaon a track in a pit. Workersshoveled, or the portableAAsh DumpWoodCoalingTowerconveyor moved, ashes intoa waiting gondola. Waterwas supplied from a steel orwood water tank. Facilitieson railroads using oil-firedsteamers wouldn’t have acoaling tower or ash dump.Steam locos were turned ona nearby wye if available(turntables requiredmaintenance and wereexpensive to install). If spacewas tight, a small turntablewith a 90' or 100' bridge (bigenough for a 2-8-0 or asmall 2-8-2) might bepresent. In the 40s and50s shortlines and a fewcash-strapped roads pickedup steam locos from largermainline roads for littlemore than scrap value andran them a long time. A few,along with facilities to servethem, lasted into the early1960s! On some roadsdiesels and motor cars werealso serviced, so many had atank for diesel fuel placednear the service tracks.
