Book 43: John“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shouldnot perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 (NKJV)Book 43: JohnIntroduction• The Apostle John wrote five of the books included in the New Testament.• This Gospel• The Three Letters of John: I John, II John, and III John• The Book of Revelation.• John lived a long life. These were the last books of the NT (and Bible) to be written.• John contains no parables and only eight miracles or “signs”; five of these are not in the otherGospels.• The Gospel of John contains 897 verses, and 262 of them contain the names “Jesus” and/or“Christ”. This is more than any other book of the Bible. Matthew comes next with 181.• Over 90% of the text of John’s Gospel is unique to John – not duplicated by Matthew, Mark orLuke.• John contains the shortest verse in the Bible: John 11:35, “Jesus wept.”• It also, of course, contains John 3:16, the Bible’s most quoted verse.Book 43: John 7 “I AM” Statements• I am the bread of life 6:35,48• I am the light of the world 8:12, 9:5• I am the door 10:7,9• I am the good shepherd 10:11,14• I am the resurrection and the life 11:25• I am the way, the truth and the life 14:6• I am the true vine 15:1,5

Book 43: John8 “Signs”• Water into wine 2:1-11• Healing the nobleman’s son 4:46-54• Healing the lame man at Bethesda 5:1-9• Feeding the five thousand 6:1-14• Walking on water 6:15-21• Healing the blind man 9:1-41• Raising Lazarus from the dead 11:1-44• The disciples’ large catch of fish 21:1-14• Based on these signs John also gives us his purpose in writing this book in 20:30-31.• And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are notwritten in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.John 17Christ’s High Priestly Prayer• John 17 contains the longest prayer in the New Testament, that of Jesus praying to His Fatherfor His disciples – an actual example of Hebrews 7:25 (NKJV):• “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him,since He always lives to make intercession for them.”• As we study this prayer look for specific points in it that somehow:• Surprise you• Teach you• Encourage you, or• In any way touch your heart• Take specific note of 17:20. John puts it in writing that he heard Jesus pray for you.
