<strong>Book</strong> <strong>43</strong>: <strong>John</strong>“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes <strong>in</strong> Him shouldnot perish but have everlast<strong>in</strong>g life.” – <strong>John</strong> 3:16 (NKJV)<strong>Book</strong> <strong>43</strong>: <strong>John</strong>Introduction• The Apostle <strong>John</strong> wrote five of the books <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the New Testament.• This Gospel• The Three Letters of <strong>John</strong>: I <strong>John</strong>, II <strong>John</strong>, and III <strong>John</strong>• The <strong>Book</strong> of Revelation.• <strong>John</strong> lived a long life. These were the last books of the NT (and Bible) <strong>to</strong> be written.• <strong>John</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>s no parables and only eight miracles or “signs”; five of these are not <strong>in</strong> the otherGospels.• The Gospel of <strong>John</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>s 897 verses, and 262 of them conta<strong>in</strong> the names “Jesus” and/or“<strong>Christ</strong>”. This is more than any other book of the Bible. <strong>Book</strong> <strong>43</strong>: <strong>John</strong>8 “Signs”• Water <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e 2:1-11• Heal<strong>in</strong>g the nobleman’s son 4:46-54• Heal<strong>in</strong>g the lame man at Bethesda 5:1-9• Feed<strong>in</strong>g the five thousand 6:1-14• Walk<strong>in</strong>g on water 6:15-21• Heal<strong>in</strong>g the bl<strong>in</strong>d man 9:1-41• Rais<strong>in</strong>g Lazarus from the dead 11:1-44• The disciples’ large catch of fish 21:1-14• Based on these signs <strong>John</strong> also gives us his purpose <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g this book <strong>in</strong> 20:30-31.• And truly Jesus did many other signs <strong>in</strong> the presence of His disciples, which are notwritten <strong>in</strong> this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the <strong>Christ</strong>,the Son of God, and that believ<strong>in</strong>g you may have life <strong>in</strong> His name.<strong>John</strong> 17<strong>Christ</strong>’s High Priestly Prayer• <strong>John</strong> 17 conta<strong>in</strong>s the longest prayer <strong>in</strong> the New Testament, that of Jesus pray<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> His Father<strong>for</strong> His disciples – an actual example of Hebrews 7:25 (NKJV):• “There<strong>for</strong>e He is also able <strong>to</strong> save <strong>to</strong> the uttermost those who come <strong>to</strong> God through Him,s<strong>in</strong>ce He always lives <strong>to</strong> make <strong>in</strong>tercession <strong>for</strong> them.”• As we study this prayer look <strong>for</strong> specific po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> it that somehow:• Surprise you• Teach you• Encourage you, or• In any way <strong>to</strong>uch your heart• Take specific note of 17:20. <strong>John</strong> puts it <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g that he heard Jesus pray <strong>for</strong> you.
