In the process, they also found what appeared to be an abandoned homeless camp and recovered a Safeway shopping cart. The kids decided to pitch in after reading an article in the Clayton Pioneer about a teen who was injured when he was riding his bike on the trail and hit a piece of pipe. Haley Morucci organized the event, and it was a great success. The class is thinking about planning a larger event that would include the entire school and a bigger area targeted for clean up. After they cleaned up, the kids went to the park above the middle school for pizza and treats. Then they returned to school for a late night of yearbook work. Clayton Rotary goes Venetian for fundraising auction Despite rainy weather and a bad economy, almost two hundred people attended the Clayton Valley/Concord Sunrise Rotary's “Venetian Carnivale” on Nov. 2 at the Walnut Creek Civic Arts Center. November 7, 2008 Clayton Pioneer • www.claytonpioneer.com Page 3 Change MDUSD candidates strike voter chord with election win ANDRÉ GENSBURGER Clayton Pioneer With a strong lead, incumbent Gary Eberhart and newcomer Sherry Whitmarsh, who joined together for a strong campaign run against incumbent April Treece and newcomer Jeff Adams, found solace in the votes that empowered a change within the MDUSD board of education. “I have been so thankful for everyone who has worked so incredibly hard for this campaign,” said Gary Eberhart. “The public wasn’t fooled by the district rhetoric. We have serious problems in this district and it is our hope that we will now be able to address those concerns and focus on the needs of the stakeholders of our district.” “The support has been overwhelming,” said Sherry Whitmarsh. This was her first campaign for public office despite years of experience at a site level and on the superintendent’s parent advisory committee. “Teachers had a lot of input in the direction of this campaign,” said board member Paul Strange. “The public is tired of the status quo and is ready for Mayor, from page 1 Clayton, the City Council gave her a certificate of recognition for voluntary Community Beautification and Litter Removal. This year, there were eight candidates running for three openings. Their platform promises change within the district. At press time both Eberhart and Whitmarsh held 32 percent of the votes compared with 15 percent for Jeff Adams and 19 percent for incumbent April Treece. I got literature on my doorstep from six of the eight candidates and saw signs for seven of them. As I look back, my first fliers were primitive in the extreme. They were a single sheet, printed on one side on pale green paper. I ran them off myself on a copy machine. My signs competed with the fliers for the primitive look. They were 12 by 18 inches, one primary color on white, one-sided and on a stick. The brochures I received from this year’s crop of candidates were a modern marvel. They were multi-color tri-folds on high-grade glossy paper with photos. PIONEER COOKIE CONTEST DEC. 11 The Clayton Pioneer’s annual Christmas Cookie Contest Judging Party is at 6:30 p.m. at the Library. Bring out your favorite Christmas cookie recipe, bake up a batch and join us for the judging and Christmas Party. All will share in the cookie bounty. Clayton’s own Vintage will provide live music and lead the carol sing. There will be games for the kids and it’s rumored that Santa, himself, may stop by. DESSERT WITH MRS. CLAUS DEC. 13 Visit Santa and have dessert with Mrs. Claus from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Clayton Community Library. The event is a family favorite with prizes, goodies and a photo with Santa. A donation is appreciated, but the event is free for children 12 and under. This event is also sponsored by the Clayton Business and Community Association. Enter the Clayton Pioneer’s 2008 Holiday Home Decorating Contest and be part of Clayton’s Parade of Lights Homes’ exteriors will be judged on Originality and creativity, attractive use of light and color, creative use of non-lighting decorations and overall effect. I am sure the signs alone cost more than my first two campaigns. In fact, the cost of the almost mandatory “candidate statement” now costs more than my first two campaigns if only because it has to be printed in English and Spanish. I don’t recall getting any mailers from Clayton City Council candidates, but they would be hard to detect in the flood of other campaign literature. I always believed Clayton did not appreciate candidates who use mass mailings since it got them wondering why the candidate was spending so much money. I am a firm believer in going door to door and meeting the voters. That was a lot easier when the population was 3,000. Now we have 7,979 registered voters and a population of more than 11,000. That’s a lot of doors to be knocked. With the election over, the county clerk has 30 days to verify the election. That means we will swear in the new council members in early December. The new City Council will elect a new mayor and in mid-December a new name will be attached to this column. My next column is the penultimate one. I will get into my years on the council, the rule of law and maybe what I see in the future.
