This course would examine the cross-national <strong>and</strong> cross-cultural <strong>tou</strong>rismmanifestations <strong>and</strong> examine opportunities for a sub regional (West African) <strong>tou</strong>r package for<strong>tou</strong>rists. It would include practical sessions to familiarise students to some selected locations.CAT 254: Introduction to Tour Guiding (T2 P1 C2)The main objective of this course is to train students in the essentials of <strong>tou</strong>r guiding. The <strong>tou</strong>rguide as an intermediary between <strong>tou</strong>rists <strong>and</strong> attractions; itinerary planning; trip planning; the<strong>tou</strong>r underst<strong>and</strong>ing the l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>and</strong> significant manifestations on route. Organized <strong>tou</strong>rs.Dynamics of group behaviour <strong>and</strong> methods of sustaining group interest. Students would havepractical sessions both on campus <strong>and</strong> off campus to horn in skills in <strong>tou</strong>r guiding. Arrangementswould also be established with industry for practical sessions.CAT 256: Contemporary African Art (T2 P1 C2)This is an introductory <strong>and</strong> a theoretical study of the Art <strong>and</strong> Art industry of the various regionsof Africa, from the prehistoric to the end of the nineteenth Century. <strong>and</strong> economic aspects of the people’s art <strong>and</strong> discusses the purposes, functions, role, importance<strong>and</strong> symbolic significance of Art in African societies. Identification, classification <strong>and</strong> forms arealso treated. Problems that militate against art <strong>and</strong> the art industry <strong>and</strong> solutions <strong>and</strong> the role ofart <strong>and</strong> the art industry in the civilization of Africa are studied.CAT 258: Government <strong>and</strong> Politics in Ghana. (T2 P1 C2)The course aims to develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the key factors underlying, <strong>and</strong> determine thestructures <strong>and</strong> processes of Ghana’s post independence politics. In particular, it examines, interalia, colonialism <strong>and</strong> its impact on policy, state, society <strong>and</strong> various strategies of development inGhana. It also looks at the various strategies of development in Ghana, political parties, systemof administration <strong>and</strong> the role of the military in Ghanaian politics.CAT 260: African Music Appreciation II (T2 P1 C2)This course aims at a deeper underst<strong>and</strong>ing of African music through music appreciation.Students are guided to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> give a more critical analysis of music through listening toa wide range of classical, popular as well as traditional music.ECON 254: Economy of Ghana II (T2 P1 C2)In the second semester the following topics are treated: growth <strong>and</strong> development; monetary <strong>and</strong>financial institutions; inflation; government <strong>and</strong> the economy; external trade relations <strong>and</strong>implications; regional integration <strong>and</strong> interregional activities; relevance <strong>and</strong> impact of majorinternational economic institutions (IBRD, IMF, WTO, ADB).ENGL 264: Literature in English II (T2 P1 C2)Students would be introduced to literature as narrative, traditional (19 th century) narrative,contemporary narrative <strong>and</strong> the African novel. Texts to be studied include one African novel <strong>and</strong>one English novel.GEOG 154: Introduction to Human Geography II (T2 P1 C2)This course introduces students to some of the human activities in space <strong>and</strong> time, <strong>and</strong> how theseactivities satisfy the needs of humankind. Specific issues of concern are urbanisation, culture <strong>and</strong>perception of natural resources <strong>and</strong> resource extracting techniques <strong>and</strong> international bodies. Theglobalization of production, markets <strong>and</strong> cultures would be treated.LAW 258: Legal Systems II (T2 P1 C2)Students would be introduced to the following aspects of law: Judicial Precedent; Interpretationof Statutes; Internal conflicts of Law; Formation of contact (outline), Trespass <strong>and</strong> Negligence(outline), Fundamental Human Rights, Acquisition <strong>and</strong> Alienation of Family/Stool L<strong>and</strong>.Practical work includes, at least, two moot courts <strong>and</strong> two visits to the courts.DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM KNUST 2009/2010 Page 2


MGT 254: Principles of Marketing II (T2 P0 C2)This course takes students through the basic principles necessary to achieve marketingobjectives.
