He supervisedthe design and construction ofCNN’s original headquarters inAtlanta, the conversion of theOmni complex into CNN Center,and the consequent master planfor TBS and CNN. He was involvedin the design of the 1996Olympic Stadium and its laterconversion to Turner Field aswell as the construction of PhillipsArena in Atlanta. He was alsoan avid yachtsman and sailingcoach. Mr. Helfrich is also survivedby his wife, Andrea CarterHelfrich, and two daughters.Retired Marine Col. John Ripley,father of <strong>Woodberry</strong> alumniSteve Ripley ’84, Tom Ripley ’89,and John Ripley ’92, died on October28, 2008. During the 1972Easter Offensive of the VietnamWar, he “was credited with stoppinga column of North Vietnamesetanks by blowing up a pair ofbridges” (according to the WashingtonPost), thereby saving manyAmerican and South Vietnameselives. His heroism is the subjectof The Bridge at Dong Ha by JohnGrider Miller. Col. Ripley, whoearned the Navy Cross and SilverStar for his service in Vietnam,was a 1962 graduate of the U. S.Naval Academy. In retirement,he served as president andchancellor of Southern VirginiaCollege in Lexington, Virginia.Col. Ripley is also survived byhis wife, Molin B. Ripley; hisdaughter, Mary Ripley; andeight grandchildren.Residential and commercialreal estate developer Kermit G.Phillips of Greensboro, NorthCarolina, grandfather of KevinPhilips ’06, died on August 30,2008. Mr. Phillips was the founderand president of Phillips ManagementGroup in Greensboroand ATC Development Corporationin Augusta Georgia, and hewas involved in other businessventures as well. He is survivedby his wife, Monica D. Phillips;two children; four step-children;a brother and a sister; and nineother grandchildren. His sister,Anne Gilchrist, is married to PeterGilchrist ’58.Malcolm Upshur Pitt, Jr., thefirst president of the Collegiate<strong>School</strong>s in Richmond, died onNovember 4, 2008. Mr. Pitt, anoutstanding athlete and a graduateof the University of Richmond(B.A.) and Harvard University(M.Ed.), began his teaching careerat <strong>Woodberry</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>.
