BACCALAUREATE DEGREEAs stated in its philosophy and goals, undergraduate academicprograms at <strong>Immaculata</strong> are based on the liberal arts tradition.The goals for the liberal arts core requirements at <strong>Immaculata</strong>are those listed as essential academic outcomes by the NationalLeadership Council for Liberal Education and America’s Promise[LEAP], a study initiated by the Association of American Collegesand Universities. The LEAP National Leadership Council (2002)outlined the following as essential learning outcomes: Knowledgeof Human Cultures and the Physical and Natural World, Intellectualand Practical Skills, Personal and Social Responsibility, andIntegrative Learning. Linked to these outcomes are the corevalues of <strong>Immaculata</strong>, which provide the foundation for academiclife in the College of <strong>Undergraduate</strong> Studies and the College ofLifeLong Learning: Faith, Caring, Service, Integrity, Learning, andTeamwork. While students in different majors and degree programsmust complete varying core curriculum requirements, all studentsreceive exposure to the four key learning outcomes and <strong>Immaculata</strong>core values listed above.Outcomes proposed by the LEAP National Leadership Councilhave been further defined and adopted as outcomes for the<strong>Immaculata</strong> liberal arts core courses.Knowledge of Human Cultures and the Physical and NaturalWorld: Through study in the sciences and mathematics, socialsciences, humanities, histories, languages, and the arts (LEAP).Through courses required by the liberal arts core, in addition tocourses required by their majors, students will:• develop the tools of critical thinking and inquiry• demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method• exhibit competence in everyday applications of mathematics• articulate an understanding of the Catholic intellectualtradition• appreciate the humanities as a way to enrich personalunderstanding• demonstrate the ability to communicate in a second languageIntellectual and Practical Skills, including: Inquiry and analysis,critical and creative thinking, written and oral communication,quantitative literacy, information literacy, teamwork and problemsolving (LEAP).
