HOW TO USE THIS GUIDEThis guide has been designed to be just that: A guide.How you choose to implement it with your students isup to you. We have provided suggestions and approaches toteaching active citizenship before, during, and after your visitto the National Constitution Center. We understand thatour activities will look different in each classroom, and weencourage you to use them at the museum and in the classroomin a manner that works best for you.Our main goal is to help students discover not only how theConstitution defines our government, but also their role withinit. Introducing students to their rights and responsibilitieswithin the Constitution will help start them on the path toactive citizenship.Prior to your visit we suggest you begin with the Pre-VisitActivity (p. 5) which is designed to be completed within oneclass period. The National Constitution Center is very differentfrom other museums, so we believe that preparing students fora different experience will help them learn more during theirtime here.For teachers who would like a student self-guided experiencewe have provided a Constitutional Notebook (p.14-15) thatcan be photocopied and handed to each student. The notebookgives students specific items and interactives to examine in ourexhibit space. The students are asked a series of questions ateach stop that connect to the theme of active citizenship.After your visit to the National Constitution Center, weencourage you to use the Post-Visit Activity (p. 16) designedto help students use the information they collected to answerthe question: Am I an active citizen?In the Appendix of the Activity Guide you will find a Glossary(p. 19) of terms with which students may be unfamiliar, andthe National Standards for Civics and Government (p. 19).We hope these materials will further enhance the activitiesthey follow, and the ways in which you can use the NationalConstitution Center in your classroom.To assist you should you choose to teach in our museum, andwe hope you do, we have put together an Activity Trail (p. 11)that can be completed in as much time as you have here at theCenter. We recommend an hour and a half to two hours. Thetrail contains seven stops throughout the permanent exhibit. Ateach stop, there is an interactive activity for students and somequestions for you to spark a discussion about active citizenship.The Story of We the People,Permanent Exhibitin DeVos Exhibit Hall2
