Developmental stages in playChildren developat different ratesand some willmove throughthe differentstages morequickly/slowlythan others.Practitioners working with children will need to be aware ofprogression and stages of development so that they can planappropriate experiences and activities.Children develop at different rates and some will move through thedifferent stages more quickly/slowly than others. It is also importantto be aware that children reach plateaux and will move back andforth along the learning continuum. A great deal will depend on thechildren’s previous experiences.As children learn through exploration and investigation within theirenvironment, they acquire skills and concepts that impact on theirfuture learning and understanding. The different stages of playdevelopment are:solitaryspectatorparallelpartnership/associativecooperative/groupchildren play alone; little interaction with otherchildren, often absorbed in their own activitieschildren observe their peers; usually they just watchand don’t join inthe child plays alongside other children; initially itwill appear that children are playing together buton closer observation it is evident that they areplaying separatelychildren play together, interaction between childrenis developing and they enjoy playing with the sameactivities and equipmentchildren play in group situations and shareoutcomes from their play; often the play will beintricate and detailed.Although children may progress through these stages they willsometimes choose to return to an earlier stage; for example, eventhough children may be playing cooperatively there will still beoccasions when they will need or choose to be involved in solitary play.Play/Active Learning 13
