Venite Adoremus is my arrangement of the well-known 19 th -century carol. It is a
macaronic carol—meaning that it combines Latin and English, as does “Angels we
have heard on high,” for example.
Twas in the Moon of Wintertime (or “Huron Carol”) is a Canadian carol written in
1643 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in
Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron people. The
song’s original Huron title is “Jesous Ahatonhia” (“Jesus, he is born”). The melody
is based on a traditional French folk song, “Une Jeune Pucelle” (“A Young Maid”).
The English lyrics were written in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton The carol uses
native imagery in place of the traditional Nativity story: Jesus is born in a “lodge of
broken bark,” and wrapped in a “robe of rabbit skin.” He is surrounded by hunters
instead of shepherds, and the Magi are portrayed as “chiefs from afar” that bring
him “fox and beaver pelts” instead of the more familiar gold, frankincense, and
myrrh.
Angels and shepherds is a traditional Bohemian carol arranged by C. H. Trevor
(1895-1976). Trevor was an English organist and teacher who held posts at Well
Cathedral, St. Paul’s Cathedral (Calcutta) and St. Peter’s Eaton Square, London.

Ding Dong! Merrily on high is an arrangement by David Willcocks of a 16 th -
century French melody. Willcocks served Director of Music at King’s College,
Cambridge, from 1950 until 1974, when he became Director of the Royal College
of Music. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1971. The text is by George. R.
Woodward (1848-1934), an Anglican priest and linguist who made many
translations from Latin, German and Greek and who also served as editor of
including the influential Cowley Carol Book.
In the Bleak Midwinter is a setting of a well-loved poem by Christina Rossetti
(1830-94). The daughter of an Italian refugee who was a professor at King’s College
London, she grew up in a cultured and artistic family. Her first volume of poems
was published when she was twelve. Another of Rossetti’s Christmas poems, “Love
came down at Christmas” appears in Hymnal 1982. The English composer Harold
Darke (1888-1976) was organist at St. Michael’s, Cornhill (London), for fifty years.
He composed extensively for organ and choir, but is best known for In the Bleak
Midwinter and the hymn tune Cornhill, “Lord Jesus, Son of Righteousness” (Hymn
144).

Messiah is the most successful and best known of Handel’s oratorios. It was
composed in twenty-four days in August and September of 1741. The first
performance was at a concert given to benefit local charities in Dublin, Ireland on
April 13, 1742, with Handel himself conducting. It was not until two years later that
Messiah was premiered in London, where, surprisingly, it was not considered a
success. It was only when it was revived in 1750 for a charitable performance in the
chapel of Thomas Coram’s Foundling Hospital that it received widespread praise.
Thereafter, Handel presented Messiah every year. The entire first section of Messiah
deals with prophecy concerning the advent of the Messiah and the birth and life of
Jesus; and the first five numbers are based on texts from the 40 th chapter of Isaiah.

Children’s Center Offering Tonight
Christmas Eve is one of two days our vestry has designated the loose plate offerings
for the St. James’s Children’s Center. All undesignated contributions in the offering
plates at the 4:00 p.m. service are given directly to the Children’s Center.
Additional gifts from our parishioners, grants from the church budget and ECW,
and our in-kind gifts of space, supplies, utilities and time of church staff make the
Children’s Center the largest outreach ministry of St. James’s. From every dollar
you pledge to St. James’s, a portion goes to the Children’s Center to enable this
miraculous ministry.
