A New President in the Midst

Tyler School of Art is fresh with possibilities as
a new president, Ann Weaver Hart, begins her
legacy. Hart was elected as the ninth president
of Temple University and is the fi rst woman ever
to serve in this role. Hart left the University of
New Hampshire, where she served as president
for four years.
Her accomplishments at New Hampshire were numerous
including attracting more than $100 million in outside
research funding and a $38 million dollar grant from NASA.
Hart dramatically improved university-state and universitytown
relationships. She implemented a plan to increase
diversity, helped faculty develop business spin-offs from their
research, improved technology transfer, and organized private
fundraising to support all these new initiatives.
Hart will inherit a university that is in the process of recruiting
more than 300 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and
conducting a $400 million dollar construction program.
Hart reponds to the challenge, “My life was transformed by
having access to a fi rst-rate education at a great urban public
university. Temple has that very same transformative power,
and I embrace it.”
“Having our musicians, artists, and
performers together is going to provide
an energy and inspiration for everyone
involved in the arts at Temple.”
“It’s a very exciting time to be a student at Tyler. In part
because a promised and anticipated move that we have
considered for 20 years is fi nally coming to fruition. The
fi ne and performing arts provide an expression of the
human spirit.”
Hart has been breaking ground every step of her career
and as the Tyler School of Art breaks ground this January,
Ann Weaver Hart will be at the forefront.
Tyler School of Art and Temple University
have received record support from its
faculty and staff as part of the 2006
Together for Temple campaign. The total
amount of gifts and pledges for the
fi scal year ending in July was $3.7 million
dollars from 1,807 faculty/staff donors.
This yields more than $7.5 million total
dollars from employees over the course
of the comprehensive campaign which
started in July 2002.
Response from Tyler’s faculty and staff has
been particularly impressive with records
of $23,990 from 60 faculty/staff donors
towards scholarships, faculty, facilities,
research, and the community. The
participation levels and donations were
up signifi cantly from the year before and
are expected to continue to rise as the
message of investing in Tyler is dispersed
around campus.
The faculty/staff committee consists of
70 leadership members: one faculty
member and one staff member from each
school. Carmina Cianculli, assistant dean
of admissions, and Rochelle Toner, dean
emeritus, have served diligently as Tyler
School of Art’s faculty/staff committee
representatives this past year.
To be able to approach donors,
corporations, and foundations with an
impressive faculty/staff giving percentage
is a powerful persuading point. “We are
thrilled with this response,” says Stuart
Sullivan, vice president for development
and alumni affairs, “This is a tremendous
start for the faculty and staff campaign.”
