BRODSKY “IRON HORSES,” LITHOGRAPH, 41 X 29 INCHES This print is one of a suite of 15 lithographs called “The Meadowlands Strike Back” in which Brodsky uses the industrial landscape of Northern New Jersey for an apocalyptic narrative. As the series progresses, everything starts to go wrong in the environment and eventually goes up in flames. A new Garden of Eden appears in the last image, but there is always evil in Paradise. The new evil are garbage bags falling from the sky, creating new garbage mountains. Brodsky is the founder of the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, newly renamed the Brodsky Center in honor of her contributions to the print world. dean’s message Appreciation to 1987 Design Workshop As promised, Tyler Gestures has undergone a major renovation, though the last design held up well for two decades. The 21st century required the addition of color photography throughout and a new editorial focus directed more towards alumni engagement. Tyler Gestures has taken on a new attitude while holding onto the most important qualities of an art school newsletter—the people and artwork. XX TYLER GESTURES WINTER 2006 DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF TYLER, It has been my pleasure to complete my first year at the Tyler School of Art and I’m happy to report on some significant accomplishments and milestones. Though we continue to plan for the most advanced visual-arts facility in the region, there are more exciting developments at Tyler: • The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania decided to increase their commitment to our new building by an additional $6 million. • Temple University’s new President, Ann Weaver Hart, decided that Tyler will continue to offer both digital and wet-lab photography, reversing a decision by a previous administration. • Substantial improvements have been made to the Elkins Park campus including repairing three roofs on buildings, adding additional lighting around campus, and increasing security. • The Architecture program passed a rigorous review and received accreditation renewal for the next six years. Lindsay Bremner, newly appointed chair for the architecture program, comes to us from South Africa. • Tyler had its biggest fundraising year ever, with more than $1.5 million added to our scholarship endowment alone. Kelli Cavanaugh, director of publications at Tyler, and Jennifer Davison and Scotty Reifsnyder, MFA students in graphic and interactive design, have worked diligently over the past five months to provide Tyler’s alumni and friends with a format that is artistic and straightforward for the reader. The design and editorial staff involved with the new layout of Tyler Gestures want to sincerely thank Frank Baseman, MFA ’83 and his design workshop students, who were the masterminds behind the creative design and production of the first issue in 1987. • Professor Sharyn O’Mara was appointed Interim Associate Dean and Claire Tillman was appointed Assistant Dean of Finance and Human Resources. • Six new tenure faculty appointments were made after extensive international searches, significantly expanding the cultural and international scope of the faculty. • Current faculty accomplishments include Pepón Osorio serving as a sole representative of the United States at the São Paulo Biennial and Tracy Cooper, a professor in the art history department, having her book Palladio’s Venice: Architecture and Society in a Renaissance Republic published. • We have a new academic coordinator, an additional member of the fundraising staff, additional clerical and (for the first time ever) technical staff for each department and an Internet services coordinator. All of the above developments are part of a plan for the School as it moves to a new location and evolves to meet the dramatic changes in the ways we study and create art. I’m looking forward to breaking ground this spring at the newly prepared site for the Tyler School of Art at 12th and Norris Streets in Philadelphia. I’m eager to hear from all of you about the plans for the future. Best wishes, Keith Morrison Dean, Tyler School of Art Baseman was the director of the original Tyler Design Workshop, essentially a publications office for Tyler, working on real-world projects to promote the school. Gestures won a gold medal from the Art Directors Club of Philadelphia, 52nd Annual Competition. Students contributing to the project were: Carol Baxter, Kirsten Engstrom, Peggy Sue Musser, Gary Peterson, Joo Sue, and Sang Yoon.
