Old Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock 

/STAROMÌSTSKÁ RADNICE S ORLOJEM/ Staroměstské 

nám. 1, Prague 1, open Mon 11 am-5 pm, Tue- 

Sun 9 am-5 pm; admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. 

Established as the seat of the Old Town authorities, 

enlarged and reconstructed throughout the 

centuries. The oldest Gothic section, including a 

tower and an oriel chapel, was built in the latter 

half of the 14th century. In the top section of the 

astronomical clock (early 15th century), the 12 

apostles appear every hour from 9 am-9 pm 

Lesser Town Bridge Towers /MALOSTRANSKÉ MOSTECKÉ VÌZ¡ E/ 

Malá Strana, Prague 1; closed until spring, admission 50 Kč, reduced 

40 Kč. The smaller Romanesque tower from the 12th century, is a relic 

from the Judita’s Bridge, the higher Gothic tower was built 200 years 

later (1464) 

Old Town Bridge Tower /STAROMÌSTSKÁ MOSTECKÁ VÌZ¡/ 

Staré Město, Prague 1; open daily 10 am-5 pm, admission 50 Kč, reduced 

40 Kč. The most beautiful gate from Gothic Europe was finished before 

1380. It is richly adorned with sculptures and statues 

St. Nicholas’ Church - the Belfry /ZVONICE CHRÁMU SV. MIKULÁŠE/ 

Malostranské nám., Prague 1, closed until spring, admission 50 Kč, 

reduced 40 Kč. The belfry of the St. Nicolas’ Church is also open to the 

public and offers a beautiful view of the Lesser Town 

Powder Tower /PRAŠNÁ BRÁNA/ Na Příkopě, Prague 1, closed until spring, 

admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. A monumental entrance to the Old 

Town built by Matěj Rejsek in 1475 in the Gothic style 

Petřín Observation Tower 

/PETØÍNSKÁ ROZHLEDNA/ Petřínské sady, Prague 1; open Sat-Sun 10 am- 

5 pm, admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. A sixty-meter iron tower with 299 

steps built for the Jubilee Exhibition in 1891 as a scaled-down copy of the 

Eiffel Tower, last entry at 5 30 pm 

Maze /BLUDIŠTÌ/ Petřínské sady, Prague 1, open Sat-Sun 10 am-5 pm, 

admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. A pavillion built in 1891 for the Jubilee 

Exhibition, later transferred to Petřín. Inside there is a mirror maze

that houses the Upper House of the Czech Parliament. The garden is

VOJAN’S ORCHARDS /VOJANOVY SADY/ U Lužického semináře, Prague 1 

Connection: tram Nos 12, 22, 33 station Malostranské náměstí. Originally 

a part of the Carmelites’ Monastery. From 1782, a property of the 

English Virgins’ Order. The reconstruction in 2001, restored the back terrace 

into a monastery garden in the shape of a cross with a fountain in 

the center. Open from 8 am-7 pm in summer, from 8 am-5 pm in winter 

FRANCISCAN GARDEN /FRANTIŠKÁNSKÁ ZAHRADA/ Jungmannovo nám., 

Prague 1. Connection: subway lines A and B station Můstek. Built as a 

monastery garden of the Franciscan Order. The restoration of the original 

shape was finished in 1992. Open Apr 15-Sep 14 from 7 am- 

10 pm, Sep 15-Oct 14 from 7 am- 8 pm, 15 Oct-14 Apr from 8 am-7 pm

OLD ROYAL PALACE - GOTHIC FLOOR 

The Story of the Prague Castle 

This unique project presents the history of Prague Castle from its prehistory 

to the present. Visitors may examine models of Prague Castle in 

each of the stages it has gone through and discover the many original 

items on display from the Castle's collections. Open daily 9 am-5 pm. 

PRAGUE CASTLE PICTURE GALLERY 

Second Courtyard; open daily 10 am-6 pm 

The Picture Gallery contains the works of celebrated European painters 

from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, arranged according to regional 

schools. Paintings by Tizian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Hans von Achen, 

Spranger, Veronese, Cranach, Holbein and others are among the gallery's 

showpieces. Czech art is represented by the works of artists from the 

Baroque period - Kupecký and Brandl.

ARMOURY - MIHULKA POWDER TOWER open daily 9 am-5 pm 

The Permanent Exhibition presents several stages in the military history 

of Bohemia. The ground and first floors are devoted to the evolution of 

military affairs in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Cathedral from All Sides - Stonemarks 

Result of the international project Stonemarks (supported by the EU) 

that aimed to collect the stonemarks to an international database. 

Admission free with the visit to the cathedral. 

OLD ROYAL PALACE, THE THERESIAN WING 

The Prague Castle in Photographs, until Jul 14 

The exhibition presents photographs of the Castle from the historically 

significant period between 1900 and 1939. It documents above all the 

transformation of the Castle to the President’s seat and the finishing of 

the St. Vitus Cathedral. However, not only documentary photographs are 

going to be presented, there will be also some artistic items by famous 

authors - J. Sudek, F. Drtikol and others. 

PRAGUE CASTLE PICTURE GALLERY 

Fallacy: Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678), until Feb 25 

Another part of the 'Gallery under a Magnifying Glass' cycle, i. e. the 

story of another art work from the collections of the Prague Castle. This 

exhibition presents a phenomenon of the 17th century, the trompe d'oeil 

retirements, through two of Hoogstraten's paintings.

Karine Ponties - Mi non sabir, on Jan 15 at 8 pm 

"Mi non Sabir" is a sensitive picture of uncertainity in which men find 

themselves when trying to live together, when trying to inflect their differences, 

to search for possible complicity. The performance results from 

the cooperation of the Belgian choreographer Karine Ponties and four 

Czech dancers awarded by Czech audience with the 2004 Czech Dance 

Platform Spectator's Prize. 

DOT 504/Lenka Ottová - Homo Sentimentalis 

"Homo sentimentalis can not be defined as a person who feels, but as a 

person who has raised feeling to a virtue." - Milan Kundera. Fantasies, 

feelings and memories- about our "inner fields", from which we draw 

strength and inspiration:feelings, which liberate us and bring us a certain 

feeling of certainty.

Trivium is a new project created by Lucie Holánková, 4th year student at 

the Department of Dance at HAMU (The Academy of Music) in Prague. 

The evening is composed of three choreographies - Carmen pas de deux 

(P. de Sarasate), K.L.L.I. fugue - bachelor graduate choreography (J. S. 

Bach a W. A. Mozart), Te Deum (A. Dvořák).

children's games and loneliness hidden in empty forms, burgeois 

social rituals and blameful relationships..." 

Entre Pasos/Pavlína Černá, Alexeider Abad premiere 

Gonzalez - No Trafico, on Jan 22 at 8 pm. 

"No Trafico" is a dance story of four travellers who find themselves waiting 

together for a bus that is inexplicably delayed. The classical situation 

that many have themselves experienced, however, has a surprise ending. 

Time becomes irrelevant and space for the expression of hidden imaginations, 

wishes and dreams opens. The waiting becomes an opportunity


for getting to know each other and for mutually getting closer to people 

who had never before met and will probably never meet again. The 

moments spent together become full of unexpected situations and incidents 

in which the features and emotions of the characters involved are 

revealed. In the acquired mutual confidence and shared hope the characters 

search for recourse from the situation. 

Artyci/ Zuzana Kozánková - Cocoon Invisible, on Jan 24 at 8 pm 

The solo dance performance Cocoon Invisible tells the story of a woman 

longing to break free from the constraints imposed by society. She lives 

within her own world, from which she wants to step out of in order to 

meet others. She is dissatisfied with isolation; she wants to comunicate. 

Perhaps she is a creature from ancient myths, with the characteristics of 

human, bird, fish, horse or snake. Or perhaps she is a contemporary 

woman who wants to be herself -original, unique. In any case, she is mysterious; 

in her, we find many faces and archetypal symbols. 

Artyci/Milan Kozánek - Omša 

… sin and purity … for mankind - man and woman ... 

A story about sin and purity. A story of a man who in his dream experienced 

both his beginning and his end. Bach's music meets contemporary 

dance. A solo male dance performance set to J. S. Bach's "Mass in b 

minor". 

Jaro Viňarský - The Last Step Before, on Jan 27-28 at 8 pm 

Jaro Viňarský's dance solo tells about a fall and a flight, about the soul's 

desire to strip itself and about the body's desire to unweight itself. The 

hero is a person who keeps thinking about how to fly to an indeterminable 

but essential point. With this choreography, Jaro Viňarský was awarded 

the 2006 SAZKA Prize for "Dance Discovery of the Year" and the 

2006 Czech Dance Platform Spectator's Prize. 

DOT 504/Lenka Ottová - Purity 

Adrenalin alternates with meditation in the new project called Purity. In 

the two extremes many people find their satisfaction, the sensation of 

living 'fully'. For how long is one able to live on the extreme, how serious 

is the dependency on adrenalin and what is its price? Do bodies striving 

for extreme exhaustion belong to their owners or are they completely 

detached from their will? 

Kristýna Celbová - AriaD.N.A, on Jan 30-31 at 8 pm 

Ancient instincts, desires and stories that we all bear inscribed somewhere 

underneath our skins...The new dance opus created by the holder 

of 2003 Sazka prize! We all have our own labyrinth, we all get lost in it 

from time to time only to emerge elsewhere after a while…But are you 

sure that you really are alone in there? Are you trying to escape from it? 

It is useless, it is going to catch you anyway… it rambles inside…and lurks 

for the moment when…

DOT 504/Anton Lachký - "Heaven is the place..." premiere 

For the purpose of creating another of its projects, the ensemble DOT 

504 invited for cooperation the Slovak choreographer working abroad, 

Anton Lachký. Together with the DOT 504 dancers, he will present a 

dance quintet focused on the movement quality and musicality. Many situations 

and questions emerge during the creation and these require reactions 

- do physical impulses depend on the character of the interpretation, 

does movement make new, latent in the past, features of the dancers 

appear, can their bodies become interconnected to such an extent that 

they are interchanged? Are there any physical limits? Another project in 

which dance fulfills a complex cognitive function on both the physical and 

aesthetic level.

PERMANENT COLLECTION - The Stories of Materials 

The Stories of Materials is a rich selection of exhibits from the Antique 

Era to the 20th century. The initial Votive Hall of the exhibition, reviews 

the history and the founders of the museum. A second part is dedicated 

to textile and fashion, named The Story of the Fibre, representing the 

development in secular and lithurgic clothing, fashion accessories, tapestries, 

laces, embrodieries, etc. In the Decorative Arts and Photography 

Hall, resides the Print and Image section. It focuses on book-binding, 

book illustrations, posters, small pieces of applied graphics, sets of photographs 

including some outstanding pieces by J. Sudek and F. Drtikol. In 

the Hall of Glass and Ceramics, there is Born in Fire, that outlines the 

technological progress in glassware, ceramics, and porcelain production. 

Treasury may be found in the Metal Hall where you will learn more about 

the craft that deals with precious metals, ivory, and gems.

Modern Central European Art - the exhibition presents works by important

The artist graduated at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Prague and 

was a member of the Trasa group. She is one of the key personalities of 

Czech art from the 2nd half of the 20th century. Thanks to unconventional 

use of various materials, she considerably extended classical sculpture 

to new areas, overreaching formal aesthetical rules. Her spatial realizations 

made of concrete and plaster and her works on paper remain, in 

spite of the time passed, bewitching sign of life instancies.

Erwin Dubský's Naval Diary, until Apr 15 

The exhibition presents a unique collection of historical photographs of 

Japan from the 1870's that was recently found at the Lysice castle. 158 

Japanese photographs, made using a contemporary popular technique on 

albumose paper, is presented in public for the first time ever. Due to the 

sensitivity of the originals, the exhibition is divided into two parts that 

can be accessed in two thematically equivalent cycles. The images present 

the period of fundamental changes in Japan after it was opened up to 

the rest of the world again. This moment creates a historical parallel with 

the work of Shomei Tomatsu and allows for the historical comparison of 

the dynamics and the depth of the changes with a soft touch of nostalgia 

resulting from the long time passed. 

Prepared in cooperation with the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the 

National Monument Preservation Institute, curated by Filip Suchomel. 

Along with the exhibition, a representative publication is released with a 

detailed description of all the photographs presented. 

Shomei Tomatsu - Skin of the Nation, from Jan 11-Feb 15 

This extensive retrospective of Tomatsu (born in 1930 in Nagoja) is the 

first general overview of his work and it shows not only his position in the 

field of Japanese postwar avant-garde but also his role in the evolution of 

modern Japanese photography. By means of approx. 260 items, the exhibition 

presents all the important areas of Tomatsu's work, e. g. 'Nagasaki 

11.02' - an appalling testimony of the consequences of the explosion of 

the atomic bomb and of lives of those who survived - of 'Chewing Gum and 

Chocolate', which is the author's first attempt to document the far-reaching 

americanisation of postwar Japan that was characterised by the contrast 

between the presence of American soldiers and the influence of 

American pop-culture. 

With Shomei Tomatsu, we are transferred from a traditional Japan to a 

Japan of economic success, where many economic, political and also cultural 

changes are in progress. The father of modern Japanese photography, 

one of the most expressive Japanese artists of the last 50 years, influenced 

the work of Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama as well as (later) 

Seiichi Furuya, Takashi Homma and Yoshiko Seino.

The model (scale 1 : 1000) provides a detailed illustration of the city’s 

appearance and, following Langweill’s model constructed at the beginning 

of the 19th century, is the most comprehensive model showing the 

contemporary state of the city. The exhibition was prepared by the City 

Development Authority Prague.

The exhibition presents a specific type of settlement that has been preserved 

in Prague's suburbs. By means of old photographs, paintings and

Anne-Lise Broyer and Nicolas Comment - Fading, until Feb 18 

At the beginning, there was an attempt to reconstruct the 'feeling plan of 

Prague' by Roger Valliant, published in the 1920's by the Aventinum publishing 

house. Like many others, Valliant spent an 'artistic apprenticeship' 

in Prague as a guest of the Czech poet Richard Weiner, a member of the 

avant-garde review 'Red' that is known as the Prague branch of the 'simplicists 

of Reims', who enthusiastically embraced the work of the Czech 

painter Josef Šíma. 

The photographs presented were collected by the authors while tracing 

Josef Šíma with the aim to set up a cycle of paintings and experiences that 

are diverse but still tied together by a deepwater whirl, like those that 

curl water in the Vltava river… 

The project was established in 2005 at the French Institute in Prague as 

part of the carte-jeune génération Culturesfrance program. 

LITERATURE 

CAFÉ OF THE FRENCH INSTITUTE 

Life, Love, Death, Emptiness and Wind, on Jan 22 at 6 30 pm 

Literary evening devoted to the 'Playing High' group on the occasion of 

the publication of the Czech translation of Roger Gilbert-Lecomt's book 

of poetry, published by the Malvern publishing house. Among the and 

artists in the group, who not only dealt with literary and artistic problems 

but also explored philosophical and existential questions of life, belonged 

Josef Šíma, the Czech painter. In the late 1920's, the group published a 

review, under the same name, and maintained a close but stormy relationship 

with the surrealistic group. A bilingual reading accompanied by 

music as a part of the exhibition program.

today. The texts in French and German are identical and the book offers 

a European vision of the history that runs over national antagonisms. The

How to Create a Luxury Mark? on Jan 31 at 7 pm 

Lecture read by Patrice de Place, the chairman of the Artistic and 

Pedagogical Committee of the Mod'Art Institute. The international institute, 

founded in 1984, prepares its graduates for their professional career 

in all fashion branches: design, fashion craft and management and dress 

accessories. The lecture will be complemented with a photograph exhibition 

in the Štěpánská 35 Gallery.

KONOPIŠTÌ CHATEAU 

Konopiště was founded in 

the 13th century as a gothic 

fortress in the style of 

French castles by Bishop 

Tobiáš z Benešova. It underwent 

several modifications 

over the next centuries until 

it was finally turned into a 

baroque residence in the 

18th century. In the 19th century it was bought by Ferdinand d'Este, 

Austrian Crown Prince, who equipped it with unique furnishings, collections

CATHEDRAL OF ST. BARBARA IN KUTNÁ HORA UNESCO 

Cathedral St. Barbara, the patron of miners, is one of the most valuable 

late gothic sites in the Czech Republic built by the most important architect 

guilds between 1403 and mid 1500s. The complete plan was finally 

completed during the reconstruction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

ÈESKÝ ŠTERNBERK 

The castle was founded in 1241 by 

Zdeslav z Divišova. In 1467, it was 

conquered by the royal army and 

returned to Sternbergs by King Vladislav 

II in 1479. The originally gothic 

castle was rebuilt in the early 

baroque style in the 17th century. email:

ÈESKÝ KRUMLOV UNESCO 

The first records of the castle date from the year 1253 by the Lords of 

Krumlov. From 1302 it belonged to Rosenbergs. The last Rosenberg, Petr 

Vok, sold it to Emperor Rudolph II. The upper castle is from the 1st half 

of the 14th century (in 1394, Bohemian King Wenceslas IV was imprisoned 

there by the opposition) was extended around 1440 and modified in 

the renaissance style in the 16th century. The oldest part is the Small 

Castle with a 76 m tower. It is from the 2nd half of the 13th century. email:

HLUBOKÁ CHATEAU 

On the site of Frohnburg Castle from the 13th century. The castle underwent 

several modifications to change it into a chateau. Major modifications 

took place in the the 16th and 17th centuries when it was rebuilt in 

the late baroque style. Its today’s neogothic Windsor shape comes from 

1841-71. The new chateau project includes park and land-scape arrangements.
