Old Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock 

/STAROMÌSTSKÁ RADNICE S ORLOJEM/ Staroměstské 

nám. 1, Prague 1, open Mon 11 am-5 pm, Tue-Sun 

9 am-5 pm; admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. 

Established as the seat of the Old Town authorities, 

enlarged and reconstructed throughout the 

centuries. The oldest Gothic section, including a 

tower and an oriel chapel, was built in the latter 

half of the 14th century. In the top section of the 

astronomical clock (early 15th century), the 12 

apostles appear every hour from 9 am-9 pm 

Lesser Town Bridge Towers /MALOSTRANSKÉ MOSTECKÉ VÌZ¡ E/ 

Malá Strana, Prague 1; closed until spring, admission 50 Kč, reduced 

40 Kč. The smaller Romanesque tower from the 12th century, is a relic 

from the Judita’s Bridge, the higher Gothic tower was built 200 years 

later (1464) 

Old Town Bridge Tower /STAROMÌSTSKÁ MOSTECKÁ VÌZ¡/ 

Staré Město, Prague 1; open daily 10 am-5 pm, admission 50 Kč, reduced 

40 Kč. The most beautiful gate from Gothic Europe was built before 

1380. It is richly adorned with sculptures and statues 

St. Nicholas’ Church - the Belfry /ZVONICE CHRÁMU SV. MIKULÁŠE/

reduced 40 Kč. The belfry of the St. Nicolas’ Church is also open to the 

public and offers a beautiful view of the Lesser Town 

Powder Tower /PRAŠNÁ BRÁNA/ Na Příkopě, Prague 1, closed until 

spring, admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. A monumental entrance to the 

Old Town built by Matěj Rejsek in 1475 in the Gothic style 

Petřín Observation Tower 

/PETØÍNSKÁ ROZHLEDNA/ Petřínské sady, Prague 1; open Sat-Sun 10 am- 

5 pm, admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. A sixty-meter iron tower with 

299 steps built for the Jubilee Exhibition in 1891 as a scaled-down copy 

of the Eiffel Tower, last entry at 5 30 pm 

Maze /BLUDIŠTÌ/ Petřínské sady, Prague 1, open Sat-Sun 10 am-5 pm, 

admission 50 Kč, reduced 40 Kč. A pavillion built in 1891 for the Jubilee 

Exhibition, later transferred to Petřín. Inside there is a mirror maze

Palace that houses the Upper House of the Czech Parliament. The garden

VOJAN’S ORCHARDS /VOJANOVY SADY/ U Lužického semináře, Prague 1 

Connection: tram Nos 12, 22, 33 station Malostranské náměstí. Originally 

a part of the Carmelites’ Monastery. From 1782, a property of the English 

Virgins’ Order. The reconstruction in 2001, restored the back terrace into 

a monastery garden in the shape of a cross with a fountain in the center. 

Open from 8 am-7 pm in summer, from 8 am-5 pm in winter 

FRANCISCAN GARDEN /FRANTIŠKÁNSKÁ ZAHRADA/ Jungmannovo nám., 

Prague 1. Connection: subway lines A and B station Můstek. Built as a 

monastery garden of the Franciscan Order. The restoration of the original 

shape was finished in 1992. Open Apr 15-Sep 14 from 7 am- 

10 pm, Sep 15-Oct 14 from 7 am- 8 pm, 15 Oct-14 Apr from 8 am-7 pm

OLD ROYAL PALACE - GOTHIC FLOOR 

The Story of the Prague Castle 

This unique project presents the history of Prague Castle from its prehistory 

to the present. Visitors may examine models of Prague Castle in 

each of the stages it has gone through and discover the many original 

items on display from the Castle's collections. Open daily 9 am-6 pm. 

PRAGUE CASTLE PICTURE GALLERY 

Second Courtyard; open daily 9 am-6 pm 

The Picture Gallery contains the works of celebrated European painters 

from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, arranged according to region-al 

schools. Paintings by Tizian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Hans von Achen, 

Spranger, Veronese, Cranach, Holbein and others are among the gallery- 

's showpieces. Czech art is represented by the works of artists from the 

Baroque period - Kupecký and Brandl. 

ARMOURY - MIHULKA POWDER TOWER open daily 9 am-5 pm 

The Permanent Exhibition presents several stages in the military history 

of Bohemia. The ground and first floors are devoted to the evolution 

of military affairs in the 17th and 18th centuries.

EXHIBITIONS 

PRAGUE CASTLE PICTURE GALLERY 

Rudolphine Beauty - Recently Found Works 

by Emperor Rudolph's Courtly Artists, until Mar 30 

The exhibition returns back to the oldest roots of Prague Castle collections 

and it will present, for the first time, found items from the private 

collection for the first time. As yet unknown works on mythological and 

religious topics created by major artists of the Court such as Hans von 

Aachen, Bartholomeus Spranger and Adrian de Vries. 

RIDING SCHOOL 

Mikoláš Aleš (1852–1913), until Apr 20 

Today’s exhibition seeks not only to present Mikoláš Aleš’s artwork, but 

also to follow the Aleš legend that has been an inextricable part of his 

work’s reception. Respect for Aleš and his renown stemmed from the 

artistic qualities of his work and equally, or perhaps even more so, from 

other extra-artistic aspects. For example, young Art Nouveau artists 

from the Mánes society, modernists from the Group of Artists, the local 

branch of the Umělecká Beseda association and members of the creative 

group Máj 57 all gradually claimed to be his followers. Aleš’s artistic 

legacy and moral example were updated when an independent 

Czechoslovakia was declared and updated again in the late 1930s under 

the Nazi threat, during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, in the 

years of post-war reconstruction and then by the nationalist-conservative 

stream of socialist realism. 

THE IMPERIAL STABLES 

František Vláčil - Struggles, from Feb 7-May 18 

This exhibition presents three major works by the important film director, 

artist, and visual poet, František Vláčil (1924-1999), all of which deal 

with topics related to the Bohemian Lands in the Middle Ages. The exhibition 

concentrates on the special style of Vláčil's work and its importance 

to the development of Czech cinematography and the depiction of 

the Czech past in the medium of film. Apart from film clips and screen 

plays, the exhibition will also include film stills, drawings, set designs, 

and original props.

In a new original František Kratochvíl’s approach to the black theatre, you 

will experience a common day and maybe a bit usual life. The performance 

connects several principles of black theatre into one non-verbal performance. 

It is a mixture of basic three-dimensional black theatre, comics, 

dance and pantomime. You will see humorous and grotesc parts and also 

poetry of drawn black theatre, contemporary dance pieces alternate with 

classical ballet and this all is tied together by the performance of the main 

characters. The performance is interactive and the spectators are welcome 

to take part in the show.

The Stories of Materials is a rich selection of exhibits from the Antique

The exhibition presents one of the most important collections 

of this pioneer in abstract art. It includes works from his 

student days to his most important era and further on.

The exhibition presents works by important Czech, Slovak, 

Polish, Hungarian and Yugoslavian artists mainly from

Aija Zarina - My Path

This exhibition will present several artworks by this Latvian 

artist, including a very interesting floor painting which will 

cover the floor of the exhibition area. 

Her art began with classical Modernism - a synthesis of Cubism 

and Fauvism that in the first decade of her work could be seen 

as a schematically formed geometrified figurative drawing in the 

plane coupled with clean, bright and contrasting local colours. 

Her drawing is interesting with its double image and meaning 

and the coding of symbolic signs in the details of the figures. 

In the main these signs manifested female sexuality.

In collaboration with Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo 

(Norway). Curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Gallery, 

London), Daniel Birnbaum (Städelschule, Porticus, Frankfurt) and 

Gunnar Kvaran (AFM Oslo). Uncertain States offers an expanded look 

at contemporary young American art. The exhibition is the result of an 

extensive, two-year research project of the curators. Their selections 

of the more than 40 artists reflect an astute, yet contentious, assessment 

of the current state of American art and culture

Opening of the gaaleriie.net Project, on Feb 20 at 6 pm 

Video screening. Zollverein School of Management and Design is the 

first building constructed in former black coal mine in Zollverein, which 

was registered in the UNESCO world heritage list in 2002. It is also the 

first European project by famous Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and 

Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA). The mysterious cube does not reveal what is 

happening inside… The 45 min video is based on various points of view 

of this building and on statements of people who experience the daily 

life there.

Eleonora Hummel, Lucie Koutková and Tomáš Dimter discuss the topic 

of 'Literature and migration' and the influence of the authors presented 

on contemporary German written literature. E. Hummel, born in 

Kazakhstan, lives in Dresden and was awarded the Adelbert-von- 

Chamisso-Förderpreis Prize in 2006 for her book 'Die Fische von 

Berlin'. L. Koutková, a Germanist, participated in the concept of the 'My 

Books Are Expensive' exhibition devoted to Libuše Moníková (from Jan 

24 at the National Literature Archive). T. Dimter is a translator, publisher 

and lector; in 2007, his translation of Terezia Mory's novel 'Day by 

Day' was released; these days he is preparing for publication an anthology 

of migrating authors' literature.

CATHEDRAL OF ST. BARBARA IN KUTNÁ HORA UNESCO 

Cathedral St. Barbara, the patron of miners, is one of the most valuable 

late gothic sites in the Czech Republic built by the most important architect 

guilds between 1403 and mid 1500s. The complete plan was finally 

completed during the reconstruction at the turn of the 19th and 20th

ÈESKÝ ŠTERNBERK 

The castle was founded in 1241 by 

Zdeslav z Divišova. In 1467, it was 

conquered by the royal army and 

returned to Sternbergs by King

Petr Vok, sold it to Emperor Rudolph II. The upper castle is from the 1st 

half of the 14th century (in 1394, Bohemian King Wenceslas IV was imprisoned 

there by the opposition) was extended around 1440 and modified 

in the renaissance style in the 16th century. The oldest part is the Small 

Castle with a 76 m tower. It is from the 2nd half of the 13th century. email:

HLUBOKÁ CHATEAU 

On the site of Frohnburg Castle from the 13th century. The castle underwent 

several modifications to change it into a chateau. Major modifications 

took place in the the 16th and 17th centuries when it was rebuilt 

in the late baroque style. Its today’s neogothic Windsor shape comes 

from 1841-71. The new chateau project includes park and land-scape
