Our city is alive with joyous
celebrations, acts of courage and
redemption, intrigue and betrayal, and
always, always love.
A place Shakespeare could call home.
Four hundred years ago, Shakespeare
wrote plays filled with the same joy,
courage and love.
Today, Shakespeare lives in Chicago.
Only the players have changed.

For more than twenty years,
Chicago Shakespeare Theater has
created unforgettable productions
of his timeless works – scorching with
honesty, bursting with humor, pulsing
with humanity – that speak to audiences
in a way they have never heard
Shakespeare before.
Kings whisper to school teachers.
Beggars hold court with politicians.
Soldiers inspire grandmothers.
Lovers confide in bankers.
And it’s that moment.
That intimate moment.
When the actors overstep the
stage and speak right into the
hearts of the audience.
That’s when Shakespeare
comes alive in Chicago.

A Shakespeare moment is a rich one, and
creates an appetite for bold, compelling
theater experiences. The kind of theater that
demands the most from its actors. And keeps
audiences coming back.
Chicago Shakespeare Theater has
emerged as an important performing arts
center, providing audiences with classic
and innovative theater.
Living up to the legacy of its name.
Audiences embrace international
productions from our World’s Stage Series.
Families celebrate their first theater
experience through CST Family Series.
More than 50,000 high school students
and teachers annually discover the
power of our playwright through Team
Shakespeare. While loyal patrons continue
to cheer our newly commissioned works
by the gifted artists of our time – just like
Globe audiences centuries before.
Look what Shakespeare started.

By coupling the talents of our producing team with
an international roster of distinguished actors, CST
aims to give theatergoers the means to explore the
dramatic works of William Shakespeare and other
classics, while providing important counterpoint
through newly commissioned plays and the presentation
of acclaimed guest artists.
Two very different, complementary performance
spaces in our theater on Navy Pier provide a perfect
home for artists and audiences alike. The thrust stage
of the 500-seat Jentes Family Auditorium (inspired by
the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre) necessitates
an intimate, immediate relationship between
the actors and their audience, who sit around three
sides of the stage. By contrast, The Carl and Marilynn
Thoma Theater, a 200-seat black box, offers practically
limitless versatility to suit the creative choices of an
artistic team.
Through a 50-week season encompassing more than
600 performances, CST leads the community as the
largest employer of Chicago actors. CST attracts
225,000 audience members annually, including 20,500
subscribers and nearly 50,000 students and teachers.
Dear FrIeND
As the Chicago Shakespeare Theater Chair, I have spent a great
deal of time attending exploratory meetings with the Theater’s
artistic directorate and staff leaders. You quickly learn to admire the
complex orchestration of parts – some predictable, many not – in
running such a demanding operation. The depth of artistic talent is
simply remarkable, as the costs for sustaining and expanding operations
are significant.
This year’s report provides a perspective on the breadth of CST’s
efforts – with productions for Shakespeare lovers, arts enthusiasts,
students and families, as well as intensive training for actors, classroom
teachers and aspiring arts managers.
There can be no doubt whatsoever that CST has made an enormous
contribution to our city.
Last season alone, CST offered 634 performances; reached 46,708
students and teachers; engaged 20,500 subscribers; hosted guest
artists from Russia, South Africa and Italy; and sent our first production
to the Royal Shakespeare Company. Yes, CST is a complex
organization. Hard working. Awe inspiring.
I’m energized by the leadership vision and will encourage emerging
plans for the next chapter in the life of Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
We will make “no small plans.”
Many of you have given generously to CST. Thank you for your
support. And to you who have not joined us at a performance
recently, I encourage you to visit and see just how magical Chicago
Shakespeare’s brand of theater can be.
M. Hill Hammock
“the depth of artistic talent is
simply remarkable. i am eager to
be a part of emerging plans at
from the artistic &
eXecutiVe directors
A few weeks before our company announced its move to Navy
Pier, we sat on a park bench overlooking the future site of Chicago
Shakespeare Theater. At the time, we were not sure exactly what
lay ahead for the company, but we could see clearly that our work
would need to embrace the vigorous energy of the city and our new
lakefront location. We would need to embody the notion “Everybody’s
Shakespeare,” making ours a home for audiences from all
walks of life and from around the world.
In the pages of this report, we see our vision coming into focus.
The Subscription Series has never been stronger, our producing
knowledge growing each year through ambitious undertakings,
world premieres and collaborations. The World’s Stage Series
astounds us – both the privilege of welcoming such distinguished
artists and the great variety of audiences they attract. Still another
terrific accomplishment looms over the horizon, as our Team
Shakespeare arts-in-education program will soon serve its one
millionth student.
The time has come again for us to push forward. Our broad, accessible
programming and the tremendous support we’ve received
from philanthropic and civic leadership inspires us to take this
company to still a higher level – from a cherished staple of the local
community to an internationally-recognized and iconic American
theater company. This is the goal.
In the coming year we will be announcing bold plans for moving
ahead, for supporting the mandates of our growing programs and
building an incomparable platform for showcasing the very best
theater artists. To remain in top form requires inspired change.
We hope you will take a minute to browse these pages. Look at all
Chicago Shakespeare Theater has become. We will ask each of you
to join us in the challenges and rewarding discoveries that lay ahead.
The centerpiece of our performance season at
Chicago Shakespeare Theater is the annual Subscription
Series. It is the engine that drives our theater,
with featured selections from Shakespeare’s canon,
complemented by other dramatic works of both the
past and present that resonate with Shakespeare’s
timeless insights into the human condition.
We are known at CST for our devotion to preserving
the integrity of Shakespeare’s language, while at the
same time making the work clear and understandable
to a modern American audience. When we choose
the lineup for a season, we look for plays that run the
gamut of emotion and cover a range of voice, tone
and style.
Our loyal audience base, numbering 20,500 annual
subscribers, comes back to support us year after year,
eager to visit our stages and experience with us the
joys of live performance.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s World’s Stage Series
affords local theatergoers prime opportunities to
experience different cultural traditions and must-see
touring shows without ever leaving Chicago city limits.
In curating the World’s Stage, CST takes its cue from
Shakespeare’s high mark of quality and from Europe’s
freewheeling touring circuit. We have had occasion to
host many of our globe’s iconic troupes: The Abbey
Theatre from Dublin, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
from London, the Chekhov International Theatre
Festival from Moscow, La Comédie Française from
Paris, The Farber Foundry from South Africa... the list
grows more impressive with each passing year.
Local theater professionals, working on our
city’s stages, benefit tremendously from personal
interactions with their international counterparts,
including rare chances to attend master classes and
forums featuring our esteemed guest artists. We
delight, too, in the honor of presenting our own CST
touring productions before discerning audiences in the
world’s great theater cities, earning praise for Chicago
and our own wonderful artists.
Ours is a landmark commitment, cementing
a new theater tradition in Chicago with a
distinctly international focus.
Through the commissioning of new stagings and the
re-illumination of classical plays, our New Classics
initiative stretches artistic boundaries.
New Classics commissions are concrete additions
to the American theater canon, and always wrought
of the same high standards we bring to our major
Shakespeare productions. Our published New Classics
scripts bring a sustained viability to these efforts, and
an open call for producers and artistic directors across
the country to try their hand at these glorious works.
As a living art form, theater by its nature demands that
we approach it not as a collection to be dusted off and
exhibited, but as an ever-growing, ever-evolving opus.
We view New Classics as a means to redouble the range
of opportunities we can present to artists, directors
and designers – pushing artists and audiences into
uncharted territory.

Our CST Family Series presents a convergence
of abridged Shakespeare productions, timeless
fables and fairy tales, interactive music concerts
and musical theater created with families in mind. For
the tens of thousands of families who visit Navy Pier
every year – each in search of an assortment of sights,
sounds and entertainment – Chicago Shakespeare
Theater can offer a significant experience, introducing
the classics and the performing arts to young people.
Family theater is a shared experience where children
engage actively and viscerally in story-making. When
stories express something meaningful about one’s
emotional landscape or the horizons of a world the
child is coming to know, the experience can be deeply
illuminating and enriching.
One need not wait until adulthood to begin a discovery
of Shakespeare’s works or other timeless tales. At CST,
we believe the classics exist for the benefit of all, and
as a guide throughout our lives. For parent and for
child, these relationships can take root through our
CST Family Series.

For the past 16 years, our Team Shakespeare artsin-education
program has been uniting the skills of
theater artists and teachers to bring Shakespeare to
life in the school curriculum.
Two central tenets guide all Team Shakespeare act-
ivities: (1) a belief that Shakespeare’s plays are best
understood as active storytelling on the theater stage;
and (2) that the skills of theater practitioners – voice,
fluency, imagination, intent – link directly to best
practices in literacy. Just as actors do when developing
characters, strong readers break down words, scan for
clues, imagine scenes and formulate opinions.
Our classroom handbooks and free workshops give
educators a battery of engaging classroom study
methods, with emphasis on active wordplay, open
discussion and dramatic reenactment of Shakespeare’s
texts. To underscore this commitment, more than
100 Chicago Shakespeare Theater matinees each
season are reserved exclusively for student audiences,
with deep ticket subsidies to ensure broad access for
all schools.
The study of Shakespeare’s plays exists as a “rite of
passage” for American students, an activity through
which it is hoped different generations, countries and
cultures may be bridged. CST views it as a privilege and
a responsibility to support this annual academic pursuit.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater seeks to be a learning
institution as well as a performing arts center, with
opportunities for our community members to delve
deep into the nuances of art and the business of theater.
CST operates three education-based programs that
invite our community into a dialogue with us to widen
understanding and build expertise.
Open DOOr at CSt
Audiences can obtain insight into the plays they see on
our stages through pre- and post-performance talks
dealing with the historical context surrounding the
play, and relevant social and political issues. Scholars
from across the country are invited to participate in
these lectures.
CSt ClaSSiCal training prOjeCt
Artistic Director Barbara Gaines founded CST through
a series of First Folio Shakespeare Workshops with a
group of young Chicago actors. Twenty years later, our
core of actors continues this tradition, spearheading
a regimen of training sessions to help expand the
range of any actor’s repertoire. We look to support a
new generation of classical actors, so that our city will
have a strong pool of thriving talent for years to come.
artS leaDerShip prOgram
CST, in partnership with The Theater School at DePaul
University, has developed a two-year Master of Fine
Arts degree program combining full-time employment
at CST with graduate-level coursework. Participants
get the best of two worlds – cutting-edge theoretical
work in the classroom and the opportunity to apply it
through hands-on, real-world training at CST. A fast
track to the highest levels of not-for-profit manage-
ment, the Arts Leadership Program is cultivating a
generation of individuals who, in the years ahead, will
guide the business of art to new heights.
