As the Chicago Shakespeare Theater Chair, I have spent a great
deal of time attending exploratory meetings with the Theater’s
artistic directorate and staff leaders. You quickly learn to admire the
complex orchestration of parts – some predictable, many not – in
running such a demanding operation. The depth of artistic talent is
simply remarkable, as the costs for sustaining and expanding operations
are significant.
This year’s report provides a perspective on the breadth of CST’s
efforts – with productions for Shakespeare lovers, arts enthusiasts,
students and families, as well as intensive training for actors, classroom
teachers and aspiring arts managers.
There can be no doubt whatsoever that CST has made an enormous
contribution to our city.
Last season alone, CST offered 634 performances; reached 46,708
students and teachers; engaged 20,500 subscribers; hosted guest
artists from Russia, South Africa and Italy; and sent our first production
to the Royal Shakespeare Company. Yes, CST is a complex
organization. Hard working. Awe inspiring.
I’m energized by the leadership vision and will encourage emerging
plans for the next chapter in the life of Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
We will make “no small plans.”

support. And to you who have not joined us at a performance
recently, I encourage you to visit and see just how magical Chicago
Shakespeare’s brand of theater can be.
