Showstopper Made of pleated silk chiffon and twentyfive<br />

yards of nylon net, the “Butterfly” ball gown (1954)<br />

was a highlight of Chic <strong>Chicago</strong>. It was designed by<br />

Charles James for Mrs. William Randolph Hearst Jr.<br />

Cover: A window onto Chic <strong>Chicago</strong> shows a sample of<br />

the contemporary gowns in the collection. Mrs. William<br />

T. Ylvisaker wore Mori’s gown (foreground) to Gerald<br />

Ford’s inaugural ball in 1974.<br />
