It’s coming....we really mean it this time. The Neurosurgery Bean Dip-Off 2010Arriving in a conference room near you in the very near future.....Another Summer, Another Group of Fantastic StudentsOur group of students again provides aninvaluable service over their break. As the summer months have come and are now on their retreattowards autumn, they leave with them a few certainties. One is that it will begin to get cooler and the nights will growlonger. The other is that another successful summer was spenthere in Neurosurgery by a group of dedicated summer students. These students worked on a variety of projects to assistour department in various and invaluable ways. The work of our summer students does not stop there, however.Another interesting project that our students engaged involvedour resident alumni and their associated files. Our studentsundertook the arduous task of scanning the photographsof each of our resident alumni, which are currently found in ourUHC offices. Additionally, the students also undertook morescanning by creating digital versions of resident portfolios. Thiswork should make it easier in the future to access and usethese files, and create additional open space in our offices. Our eight students this summer were:• Kaitlin Arnold, Michigan State University• Zack Bekowies, University of Michigan• Wynneth Daywalt, Central Michigan University• Jamie Ding, Princeton University• Kelsey Flynn, Northeastern University• Alex Jones, Michigan State University• Marciela Lewis, Wayne State University• Brian Like, Boston College• Brad VandeVusse, Hope CollegeSo, as autumn approaches, so does the end of our time with anothergroup of great summer student workers. They, as always, have provided invaluable and important work that does muchfor the success of our department. Thanks summer students! The projects the students worked on while here were variedand numerous. One of the main tasks was to work on scanningour medical charts so they could be sent off-site to conservespace. This summer, the students scanned over 4,000 chartsand merged over 8,000 documents. Moreover, just like last summer, it’s been reported that the studentshave been performing this task with alarmingly amazingaccuracy. This attention to detail is essential for a project of thistype and our summer students handled it with the greatest ofease.Brain Food for the MonthObscure Michigan LawsTwo of our summer students, Wynneth Daywalt and Brian Like, gota chance to visit the operating room before their summer work wasover with the department and see some of our neurosurgeons atwork up close and personal.State of Michigan: You cannot be drunk on a train.Birmingham: You may not throw rotten soap into the street.Detroit: You may not loiter in the city morgue.Clawson: Throwing of snowballs is illegal.Grosse Pointe: You are not allowed to disrupt church with laughter.Livonia: You may not send a postcard that will annoy someone.Mt.
