Want a taste <strong>of</strong> college life?<br />

This five-week residential program <strong>of</strong>fers advanced<br />

rising high school seniors a real college experience.<br />

Students who successfully complete the Rising Star<br />

program earn college credit, which may be applied<br />

toward a baccalaureate degree at SCAD or another<br />

college or university. (Course credits are applied<br />

to d e gre e re q u i re m e nts at t h e d i s c re t i o n o f t h e<br />

accepting institution.)<br />

Application Requirements<br />

• Completed online application <strong>and</strong> $25 application fee. The<br />

application is available at www.scad.edu/applynow. These may<br />

be submitted prior to submission <strong>of</strong> supporting documents. Be<br />

sure to select Summer <strong>2010</strong> as intended entry term.<br />

• Official report <strong>of</strong> SAT or ACT scores<br />

• Visual portfolio<br />

• Three recommendations (forms available online at www.scad.<br />

Portfolio<br />

Portfolios are reviewed on the following qualitative measures:<br />

a e s t h e t i c awareness, composition, d r awing, d e s i gn, color<br />

p e r c e p t i o n , s p a t i a l p e r c e p t i o n , q u a l i t y o f p r e s e n t a t i o n ,<br />

technique <strong>and</strong> originality. Strong 2-D <strong>and</strong> 3-D work that shows<br />

attention to technique, drawing, scale <strong>and</strong> original design are<br />

favorably considered. For examples <strong>of</strong> suggested exercises,<br />

see the Rising Star application requirements online at www.<br />

scad.edu/summer.<br />

Admission Criteria<br />

Admission to the Rising Star program is highly selective <strong>and</strong><br />

preference is given to applicants with a grade point average<br />

<strong>of</strong> 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, SAT or AC T scores at or above<br />

the national average, strong portfolio, <strong>and</strong> demonstration <strong>of</strong><br />

maturity, leadership <strong>and</strong> responsibility.<br />

Scholarship Opportunities<br />

S t u d e n t s w h o w o u l d l i k e t o b e r e v i e w e d f o r R i s i n g S t a r<br />

scholarships should indicate this on the application <strong>and</strong> submit<br />

all documentation by April 15, <strong>2010</strong>. Funding is limited <strong>and</strong><br />

is awarded to the earliest qualifiers. Scholarship awards are<br />

available to both U.S. citizens <strong>and</strong> international students.<br />

Instruction <strong>and</strong> Class Size<br />

A l l c o u r s e s a r e t a u g h t b y S C A D f a c u l t y m e m b e r s . L e v e l<br />

<strong>of</strong> instruc tion is challenging <strong>and</strong> class size is small, with a<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 20 students per class.<br />

Credit/Evaluation<br />

Upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> the program, each student<br />

earns 10 quarter hours <strong>of</strong> college credit that may be applied<br />

toward a baccalaureate degree at SCAD or another college or<br />

university. (Course credits are applied to degree requirements<br />

at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the accepting institution.) Evaluations <strong>of</strong><br />

a c a d e m i c p e r fo r m a n c e a n d a r t i s t i c p rogress a re m a d e b y<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essors at the conclusion <strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

Rising Star Alumni Procedures<br />

for Full-time Enrollment<br />

S t u d e n t s w h o s a t i s f a c t o r i l y c o m p l e t e R i s i n g S t a r w i t h a<br />

c u m u l a t i v e g r a d e p o i n t a v e r a g e o f 3 . 0 o r h i g h e r m a y b e<br />

automatically admitted to SCAD for fur ther undergraduate<br />

study. These students also may be invited to continue their<br />

Rising Star experience as eLearning students. Through eStars,<br />

s t u d e n t s t a k e o n e o n l i n e c o u r s e e a c h q u a r t e r w i t h o t h e r<br />

freshmen; eligible students may earn up to 25 quarter hours <strong>of</strong><br />

credit. Students who wish to be considered for early admission<br />

should contact the admission department.


Student Life<br />

Housing<br />

R i s i n g Star s t u d e nts re ceive t r i p l e o ccupanc y h o u s i n g fo r<br />

five weeks in a college residence hall. Rooms are furnished<br />

with beds, drafting tables <strong>and</strong> private baths. Every student is<br />

assigned a roommate; no exceptions are made.<br />

A pr<strong>of</strong>essional residence direc tor <strong>and</strong> residence assistants<br />

supervise the students in the residence hall. A security guard<br />

is posted at each residence hall 24 hours a day.<br />

Dining<br />

Students have their meals in SCAD dining halls. The Rising Star<br />

program includes three meals per day, Monday through Friday,<br />

<strong>and</strong> two meals (brunch <strong>and</strong> dinner) on Saturday <strong>and</strong> Sunday.<br />

Activities/Curfew<br />

Rising Star students have free time daily before <strong>and</strong> after class<br />

sessions. At 11 p.m., students are required to be in the residence<br />

hall for the evening. After midnight on class nights <strong>and</strong> after<br />

1 a.m. on non-class nights, students are required to be in their<br />

assigned rooms.<br />

Residence assistants plan <strong>and</strong> coordinate ac tivities to build<br />

community among Rising Star students <strong>and</strong> to help participants<br />

become familiar with SCAD <strong>and</strong> community resources.<br />

Visitors<br />

Only family members <strong>and</strong> Rising Star students are permitted<br />

to visit in the residence hall.<br />

Overnight Guests<br />

Overnight guests are not permitted.<br />

Automobiles/Transportation<br />

Rising Star students are permitted to bring cars, but are not<br />

permitted to drive them during the program. Transportation is<br />

provided to <strong>and</strong> from class <strong>and</strong> to all SCAD activities.<br />

A complimentar y shuttle ser vice to <strong>and</strong> from the <strong>Savannah</strong>/<br />

H i l t o n H e a d I n t e r n a t i o n a l A i r p o r t a n d S C A D S a v a n n a h i s<br />

available on check-in <strong>and</strong> checkout days during specific hours.<br />

Smoking<br />

Smoking is prohibited at Rising Star <strong>and</strong> in all college facilities,<br />

including classroom buildings <strong>and</strong> residence hall rooms/hallways.<br />

Parent Information<br />

P r i o r t o t h e s t a r t o f t h e p r o g r a m , p a r e n t s a r e m a i l e d a n<br />

information packet including frequently asked questions <strong>and</strong><br />

contact information. Parents who accompany their students<br />

to check-in attend a parent information session.<br />

Extra Credit–Parent Workshop<br />

Parents can experience SCAD for themselves by participating<br />

in a SCAD tour <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s-on workshop Friday, July 23, from<br />

1:30-4:30 p.m. The fee for this enter taining <strong>and</strong> informative<br />

opportunity is $20. To register, parents should send e-mail to<br />

savextracredit@scad.edu.<br />

Supervision/Security<br />

All students are assigned a residence assistant at check-in.<br />

Each RA is responsible for a group <strong>of</strong> students <strong>and</strong> reports to<br />

a pr<strong>of</strong>essional residence director. Security guards are posted<br />

at the residence hall entrance 24 hours a day <strong>and</strong> at all SCAD<br />

buildings during hours <strong>of</strong> operation. A current SCAD ID card<br />

is required to access any SCAD building/residence hall.<br />

Course Selection<br />

Foundation studies courses are required for all students earning<br />

an undergraduate degree at SCAD. Rising Star students find<br />

that the foundation studies courses are invaluable in helping<br />

them prepare a por tfolio prior to finalizing their enrollment<br />

after high school graduation.<br />

R i s i n g S t a r s t u d e n t s g e n e r a l l y e n r o l l i n t w o f o u n d a t i o n<br />

studies courses or one foundation studies course <strong>and</strong> one<br />

introductory course.<br />

Upon acceptance to the R ising Star program, students are<br />

asked to indicate their preference <strong>of</strong> courses. Students are<br />

placed in courses based upon receipt <strong>of</strong> the $250 program<br />

deposit <strong>and</strong> space availability. Placement in the student’s top<br />

two course selections is not guaranteed.<br />

Supplies<br />

R i s i n g S t a r s t u d e n t s a re responsible fo r p u rchasing t h e i r<br />

own class supplies. Supply expenses var y by course. A list <strong>of</strong><br />

supplies is provided with course schedule. Supplies may be<br />

purchased at the SCAD bookstore upon arrival. Photography<br />

students must bring a digital camera, preferably with at least<br />

6.1 megapixels.<br />

Students should not purchase supplies for any class until they<br />

have been admitted to the program <strong>and</strong> receive their course<br />

schedule, as classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis<br />

based on receipt <strong>of</strong> the $250 nonrefundable program deposit<br />

(due May 15, <strong>2010</strong>).<br />

Course Offerings<br />

Foundation Studies<br />

Foundation studies classes consist <strong>of</strong> studio work<br />

augmented by slide lectures, demonstrations, field<br />

trips <strong>and</strong> critiques. Students exp<strong>and</strong> their critical<br />

thinking abilities <strong>and</strong> deepen their underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong><br />

visual language, which can be applied to concepts<br />

<strong>and</strong> materials encountered in major programs <strong>and</strong><br />

in the pr<strong>of</strong>essional world.<br />

DRAW 100 Drawing I<br />

This introductor y studio course teaches students basic skills<br />

<strong>and</strong> techniques in drawing from direc t obser vation. Direc t<br />

obser vation for this course is defined as drawing from still<br />

l i fe, l a n d s c a p e a n d a rc h i tec t u re. The p r i m a r y g o a l s a re to<br />

learn to judge proportion <strong>and</strong> to depict those observations in<br />

drawings that demonstrate an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> depth, form<br />

<strong>and</strong> space. Verbal sk ills are developed through critique <strong>and</strong><br />

class discussion.<br />

DSGN 100 2-D <strong>Design</strong><br />

Utilizing the elements <strong>and</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> design, <strong>and</strong> working<br />

in various black-<strong>and</strong>-white <strong>and</strong> color media, students in this<br />

course develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the various organizational<br />

possibilities available in designing for the flat sur face. Along<br />

with learning <strong>and</strong> applying pr<strong>of</strong>essional presentation skills <strong>and</strong><br />

craf tsmanship, the development <strong>of</strong> ideas, problem-solving<br />

sk ills <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing design concepts are the focus <strong>of</strong><br />

this course.


Major/Elective Courses<br />

The following courses <strong>of</strong>fer students the opportunity<br />

to develop creative problem-solving sk ills <strong>and</strong> to<br />

communicate their own sensibility <strong>and</strong> vision. These<br />

courses fulfill introductory course requirements in<br />

each respective major. They also may fulfill a studio<br />

elective requirement. Placement is dependent on<br />

portfolio <strong>and</strong> transcript evaluation.<br />

ARCH 101 Introduction to Architecture<br />

This lecture/seminar course introduces students to the theories<br />

<strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> architecture <strong>and</strong> encourages creative <strong>and</strong><br />

analytical thought. B y considering the entire scope <strong>of</strong> the<br />

discipline <strong>and</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession, the course focuses on developing<br />

an ability to ask appropriate questions in relation to decision-<br />

making regarding the built environment. Students explore the<br />

abstract, spatial, social/cultural, environmental <strong>and</strong> tectonic<br />

concepts that affect the built environment.<br />

FASH 100 Fashion Technology<br />

In this studio course, students are introduced to pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

s t a n d a r d s e w i n g t e c h n i q u e s a n d a p p a r e l c o n s t r u c t i o n .<br />

Through assignments, the techniques are applied to produce<br />

finished garments.<br />

FILM 101 Introduction to Video Production<br />

This course introduces students to basic video produc tion<br />

techniques <strong>and</strong> provides an over view <strong>of</strong> film <strong>and</strong> television<br />

t h e o r y a n d c r i t i c i s m . B y c o m b i n i n g t h e o r y a n d h a n d s - o n<br />

exercises, students develop the technical, analytical <strong>and</strong> critical<br />

foundations necessary in the video preproduction, production<br />

<strong>and</strong> postproduction phases. Students acquire the conceptual<br />

abilities needed to plan <strong>and</strong> execute a variety <strong>of</strong> video projects.<br />

PHOT 113 Photographic Foundations I<br />

T h r o u g h a c o m b i n a t i o n o f l e c t u r e s , d e m o n s t r a t i o n s ,<br />

a s s i g n m e n t s a n d c r i t i q u e s , s t u d e n t s l e a r n t o s e e<br />

photographically through an exploration <strong>of</strong> the basic tools,<br />

techniques <strong>and</strong> aesthetics <strong>of</strong> digital photography, with an<br />

emphasis on creative use <strong>of</strong> camera controls, exposure, digital<br />

imaging s<strong>of</strong>tware, <strong>and</strong> an awareness <strong>of</strong> the critical issues in<br />

contemporary photography.<br />

VSFX 101 Survey <strong>of</strong> Visual Effects<br />

This course introduces students to the history <strong>and</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> visual effects through lectures, readings <strong>and</strong> screenings <strong>of</strong><br />

important works. Students examine the various ways in which<br />

a r t i s t i c a n d technological tools h ave b e e n u s e d to c reate<br />

convincing visual effects for film, television <strong>and</strong> games. Studies<br />

focus on how visual effects techniques have evolved to stay<br />

current with increasingly discerning audiences.<br />
