Mr.Hyatt has fond memories of theminyan’s early days, especially underthe spiritual direction of Rabbi Dr.Samuel Rosenblatt z’l, Beth Tfiloh’sfounding rabbi..Beth Tfiloh president Dr. MarcLeavey, joined the Minyannairesfor a joyous milestone – his son’sBar Mitzvah. “I brought him to theminyan on the Thursday before theceremony to have his first aliyah.” Dr.Leavey recounts that although he hadno formal Jewish education, he “wasproud to be there, for the first time, tosee him have his aliyah. “Dr. Leavey didn’t return to theminyan until after his father’s passingin 1992. Although unfamiliar with thekaddish prayer, he persisted. “But Icame every day, and tried my best tolearn and, after a few months, I wascomfortable with the service, even ifI did not understand it, and could saythe kaddish.”After a few years’ hiatus, Dr. Leaveyreturned in 1997, determined to learn– and understand -- the full morningservice, in honor of his father-in-law,who had just passed.“With the help of men like SiggyYaffee, Irv Hyatt, and many others,I listened, and I learned,” he reflects. After his brother-in-law’s death, hisfellow minyannaires convinced himto learn—and lead—the minchaservice. “They told me that I knewthe Shemona Esrei, and that withAshrei and Aleynu, that was the wholeservice. So I began.”Now, Dr. Leavey is a Minyannaireregular, helping newcomers acclimateto the service. “Every once in a while,a father brings a son for his firstaliyah,” he says. “And I look, and Ismile, because I was that father, andmy son is now a father, himself, whoreturned to the minyan a few yearsago to name his daughter. That’s whatthe minyan, and Beth Tfiloh, means tome.”FIRST ALIYAH - A Bar Mitzvah boy has his firstalliyah at the BT morning minyan.New Membersohtcv ohfurcWe would like to welcome to Edand JoAnne (Nonny) Kelly and theirchildren, Jonathan (Yoni) and Rina.Ed and Nonny both work for the U.S.Department of Homeland Security,Yoni is in Kindergarten at Beth Tfiloh, and Rina is also at Beth Tfiloh in the 3’s.We would like to welcome toHerbert and Betsy Wolk.
