The Stand Al<strong>on</strong>e VXO (<str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g>) is a kit sold by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Four</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>QRP</strong> group and can be obtained at thisweb locati<strong>on</strong>: www.wa0ipt.com/savxo.html. As supplied, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> kit c<strong>on</strong>tains crystals for 40 Meteroperati<strong>on</strong>. However, <strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> goals of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> design was to be able to use <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> any frequencybetween 160 <strong>Meters</strong> and 10 <strong>Meters</strong> directly and higher if heterodyning methods are used. During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>development of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g>, a number of ham band crystals from ESS were tried to assure that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>design worked over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> previously menti<strong>on</strong>ed frequency range. After <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g> development ended, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> set of 18.096 MHz crystals were installed into a prototype<str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g> board with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> though to turning this unit into a <strong>17</strong> Meter transmitter. That unit is shown in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> photo below.Using <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se crystals al<strong>on</strong>g with a 3.9 uH inductor, a tuning range of 18.072 to 18.096+ could beobtained. The next larger value molded inductor, 4.7uH, resulted in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lowest frequency being below<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bottom of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> band, so was not used. The power output from this <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g> was in excess of 200milliwatts, suitable for <strong>QRP</strong>p operati<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> additi<strong>on</strong> of an external low pass filter to make it Part97 legal. However, it was though that a bit more power would be nice to have, so a single transistor (2N2219A)amplifier was designed and built using Manhattan-style c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>. Included with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> amplifier wasa PNP switch that would provide voltage to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g>, so it was being keyed. That would also allowthis <strong>17</strong> Meter transmitter to be used with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> K8IQY MagicBox Solid <strong>State</strong> T/R System, also sold by<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Four</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>QRP</strong> group. That kit can be found here: www.wa0ipt.com/mbmagicbox.html. Below is<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> schematic of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>17</strong> Meter Amplifier and PNP Keying Switch.

The intent is to run it at about ½ watt, to keep <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dissipati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2N2219A at a level <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heatsink can handle. That power level should be fine for CW c<strong>on</strong>tacts <strong>on</strong> <strong>17</strong> <strong>Meters</strong>.

Next is ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r photo is of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <strong>17</strong> Meter Amplifier wired toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r.The final photo is a Spectrum Analyzer plot of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> output into a 50 Ohm dummy load with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> powerlevel set to ½ watt.

The small blip in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> center of this plot is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 3 rd harm<strong>on</strong>ic energy at about 55 dB below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carrier, which is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> big peak <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> left side. This whole effort was directed at dem<strong>on</strong>strating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> utility of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SAVXO</str<strong>on</strong>g> as a building block for o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rdesigns. It is a versatile little board which, with a bit of imaginati<strong>on</strong>, can be used in a variety of ways.An undocumented project also has it being used as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> frequency c<strong>on</strong>trol element in a 10 Meter CWtransmitter.
