Some of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Cherwell</strong>’swordsmiths were on fineform at the annual literarycompetition ‘A Question ofWords’. Following a seriesof word-based challengeswithin schools, studentsfrom across Oxford werechosen to write and performtheir own pieces at theNorth Wall Arts Centre inJune. All our teams werebrilliant, but particular mentionmust go to the Year 8team – Hannah McNally, IndiaMarsden and <strong>The</strong>odoraLonsdale – who won firstprize for two outstanding poems.Year 12 <strong>Cherwell</strong> studentshave been shortlistedfor a prestigious national poetrycompetition spearheadedby Poet Laureate Carol AnnDuffy. ‘Anthologise’ waslaunched by HRH <strong>The</strong> Duchessof Cornwall in September2011and invited school studentsaged 11-18 to createtheir own anthologies of poetry.<strong>The</strong> judges comprised CarolAnn Duffy; National Poet forWales, Gillian Clarke; poetJohn Agard; poet Grace Nichols;and Cambridge Professorof Children’s Poetry, MoragStyles. Carol Ann Duffy comments,“<strong>The</strong> judges were unanimousin their admiration – the bestanthologies show that theculture of the school, communityand family allow the pupilsto see their own lives insidetheir chosen poems andtheir own experience spokenin the words of great poetry.”It is a testament to our studentsthat two <strong>Cherwell</strong>groups part of a final shortlistof seven entries.<strong>The</strong> winning school, whoseanthology will be publishedby Picador in 2013, will beannounced on 31 <strong>July</strong>.
