Over three hundredregistered for the three days of presentations, vendor displays, and networkingopportunities. This will be a year of change for IWEA. Earlier this year, Dennis Priewe relinquishedthe treasurer duties to Deb Ness, and Mary Johnson is handing the secretary dutiesto Lauri Riotte, both of Fox Metro. IWEA, and the Executive Board in particular, appreciate the hard work and organizational skills that Dennis and Mary have giventhe organization.WEFTEC is in Chicago,Kendra Sveum are busyThe Local ArrangementsPerkovich is also preparhavemany opportunitiesWEFTEC.With the many volunteeropportunities available, all members have achance to get involved . . .and Greg Cargill andpreparing for WEFTEACH.commitee headed by Brianing for the event. DIRECTOR’S CORNERT AKING IT TO THE MAXBy Theodore Denning, Director ‘10 and Charles Corley, Director ‘08Ted Denning attended the local WEFMAX meeting inMinneapolis-St. Paul the week prior to the IllinoisAnnual Conference. WEFMAX, for those of you whoare unfamiliar with these meetings, is a series of regionalconferences held around the country roughly 6 monthsfrom the annual WEFTEC conference. The session started with a meeting for House of Delegates(HOD) members on Thursday afternoon, and the discussionscontinued on how to make the HOD relevant andmeaningful. The House is still in an organizational mode, and the input from WEF and the Board of Directors is that,in addition to minimal constitutional duties, the Delegatesare important in communicating the wants, needs anddesires of the MAs to WEF and vice-versa. In that vein, please contact Ted, Chuck or Lou (see the executive committeelist) with issues you may have concerning WEF.The main part of WEFMAX, which is directed at MA leadersbut is open to any interested member of WEF, includedpresentations on where and how WEF is heading. Therewere major presentations on Water for People and theactivities of the government affairs committee promotingdiscussions on the future of, and changes to, the CleanWater Act. An interesting statistic: by the year 2025, thetreated BOD loadings to the nation’s waterways will exceedthe total BOD loadings during 1972 due to the increasedvolume of the discharges. WEF representatives alsoemphasized their partnering with other organizations, especially AWWA and NACWA, on specific projects whichsegued into the One Voice for Water theme. WEF VicePresident Paul Freedman, Michigan and WEF House ofDelegates Speaker Tom Helgeson, Florida spoke on theissues they see facing the future of WEF and MAs, and areinteresting individuals with a great sense of humor. Amajor part of Ted’s presentation to the group raised theongoing issues of apparent lack respect/recognition ofMAs without professional staff, and recognized the needfor all volunteer MAs to maintain a higher profile withWEF. This is just a brief summary of an intense series ofpresentations from WEF and 15 MAs that were representedat the WEFMAX. Individual MA presentations (from thegreat ideas exchange) and Ted’s photos from the event canbe seen at wef.org (search for WEFMAX).The origin of Water Environment Federation as a creationof (albeit under a different name) the MembersAssociations is now in transition. WEF wants, and indeedneeds, the members of every MA to take an active part inthe work and leadership of the Federation. The term ‘Federation,’ which lent itself to a more literalinterpretation in an earlier era, is now interpreted in anentirely different sense. WEF now, through its officers andExecutives, sees itself as the lead organization to which weas individuals and we as a MA belong. Categories of membershipand status and representation have changed sincethe adoption of the new WEF Bylaws in October 2006.Nonetheless, without the members, no organizationstands alone regardless of origin or intended direction.Ted’s visit to and participation in the Spring WEFMAXpoints out the dual role we as an MA and we as individualshave in our memberships in IWEA and WEF. With responsibilitycomes status. IWEA needs your involvement. Togain status in IWEA, we as members need to participate;IWEA and WEF succeed by your taking part. Connection toIWEA and WEF is the route to gain that individual andorganizational status. Why? That’s simple. You have a talentthat both can use. IWEA and WEF have a means foryou to display that talent and gain status both professionallyand individually. And of equal import, the time to startthat quest is now. It is never too early, but with time passing,it might become too late.IWEA and WEF are the Water Pollution profession’s equivalentto “dancing with the (water pollution profession’s)stars!” Our latest very successful “dance” was the AnnualConference. Check your dance card; see the calendar inthis issue for our next dance. Make a date. You can tangowith some of Illinois’ best. This year’s Annual Conference was one of the best by anymeasure. Thanks to all who brought it to us!We were honored by the visit of Past President MohamedDahab to this year’s Annual Conference. Mohamed madehis own impact as well by greeting and talking to many inattendance. Hopefully you got your own chance for a conversationwith him, however brief. His sincere and goodnatured presence was appreciated. Thank you, Mohamed.IWEA CALENDAR: FEBRUARY - MARCH 2008Date Meeting/Activity LocationJune 17 IWEA/CSWEA Laboratory Seminar City of Crystal Lake Training CenterJune 20 Fifth Annual Golf Outing Cinder Ridge Golf Course, Willimington3

2008 IWEA CONFERENCE H IGHLIGHTSPROGRAM AN “OVERFLOWING” SUCCESSBy Eric Cockerill, Program Committee ChairThis year’s Annual Conference program continued tobuild on recent successes. Over 55 technical sessionswere presented by members of our industry, including representatives from public agencies, manufacturers, consultants, and others. Attendance was excellentwith an average of over 40 people per session andseveral sessions that overflowed their rooms. Luckily, wehave a long term control plan to alleviate that problemand ensure added space for next year. The technical program was again anchored by the effortsof several IWEA committees including the Biosolids andLaboratory Committees, which continued their traditionof hosting full technical sessions, and two newer sessionsled by the Water Resources Committee and YoungProfessionals Committee. For the first time, the WaterResources Committee hosted a half-day WatershedSymposium on the last day of the conference that wasvery well received. The Young Professionals also hosted atechnical session on Wednesday afternoon that focusedon issues of particular interest to students and young professionals. It was certainly good to see that older professionalsalso attended that session, proving that one canalways learn new things.A special thanks goes to all those who gave presentationsat the conference. Without your time, effort, and support, the technical program would not have been the success itwas. All who are interested in the opportunity to presentat next year’s Conference are encouraged to submit anabstract for consideration. It is an excellent avenue tocollaborate with colleagues, raise awareness of issues ofimport to our industry, and communicate with an audienceof professionals directly related to your field.Next year, we will continue to improve the program. Wealready plan more committee-driven technical sessions, such as one led by the newly formed Electrical Power andProcess Control Committee. In addition, other improvementsare in the works, including making all the presentationsavailable as PDF documents on the IWEA websitefollowing the Conference. If you have any suggestions orideas for improvements, the Program Committee welcomesyour input.Look for the 2009 Call for Abstracts to be released in earlyMay of this year. The Call for Abstracts will be mailed tomembers and can be found at www.iweasite.org. Pleasenote that electronic abstract submittals will be due bySeptember 2nd, 2008.If you are interested in joining the Program Committeefor the 2008-2009 year or have suggestions for the technicalprogram, please contact me at (312) 373-6678 oreric.cockerill@cte.aecom.com.SHOVELERS WELCOME THREE NEW MEMBERSBy Gregory Brunst, pH7The Illinois Select Society of Sanitary SludgeShovelers, known as the “I5S,” inducted three newmembers into its elite ranks during the IWEAConference in March.Al Hollenbeck, President and CEO of RJN Group, KamLaw of CTE/Aecom Engineers and Mohamed Dahab,WEF Past President were all welcomed into the Shovelers’ranks. Kam turned the tables on the “old pH7” by correctingall of his ill-gotten biographical data. It seems youjust cannot find good co-conspirators anymore! Mr.Hollenbeck attempted to add to my troubles by wantingto shovel the biosolids into my outstretchedhands…NOT! Professor Dahab used his ingenuity toshorten our motto during his shoveling exercise to “I5S”from the traditional “Illinois Select Society of SanitarySludge Shovelers.” We presented him a shovel anyway. All three of these individuals were elevated to the"highest pinnacle on the sludge bed" and were eachawarded a golden shovel and a membership certificatefor their unselfish contribution of service to both theAssociation and the Federation.Greg Brunst, PH7, presents the new inductees to theIllinois Select Society of Sanitary Shovelers.5

Therefore, we arelooking at the new Embassy Suites Hotel & ConferenceCenter in East Peoria as a possibility for 2010 and 2012. Itjust opened in January 2008 and is a gorgeous and welllaid out facility which would allow our Conference togrow even larger over the next several years. With thepossibility of wastewater operator continuing educationunits (CEU’s) in the near future and ever-increasingattendance at our Annual Conferences, a conference centerseemed like the next logical step.If you would like to give your input or have questionsabout the future of the IWEA Annual Conference, feel freeto email me at awithers@cmtengr.com.7

YOUNG PROFESSIONALSTOUR SHEDD AQUARIUMBy Brandon J. Celaya,Young Professionals Committee ChairOn April 19, the Young Professionals Committeehosted a “behind the scenes” tour of the SheddAquarium. Allen LaPointe, director of water systemsand analysis, was willing to take time out of his dayto show us some of the things that make the SheddAquarium one of the best in the country. Water treatmentis a high priority as nine out of 10 deaths at theaquarium can be contributed to problems with waterquality. Our very entertaining tour started with the facilitiesfor small creature care, followed by the Shedd’s testinglaboratories. The last part of the tour showed thewater treatment facilities. The Shedd’s treatmentprocess currently operates at a high level of reuse with agoal of 100 percent reuse in 10 years. At the conclusionof the tour, YPs were given the opportunity to visit theAquarium. After a morning on their feet, a group of YPsmet at Kroll’s South Loop for a pizza lunch. This eventhad excellent attendance, and the YP Committee wouldlike to thank those of you who took time out of yourSaturday to attend. from the SHED . . . promoting the understanding ofnonpoint source issues, including storm water and watershed managementBy Dan Bounds, Watershed Management Committee ChairThe Watershed Management Committee hosted itsWatershed Management Symposium at the IWEAAnnual Conference on Thursday, March 20, 2008.Approximately 40 people attended to discuss timelywatershed management topics, including funding, regulations, and new available tools and resources. Lunchwas served as Dan Bounds kicked off the symposium withan overview of Illinois’ organized watershed groups andcurrent water quality challenges. More than 90 organizedwatershed groups and ecosystem partnerships exist inIllinois, with some common goals but unique characteristicsand challenges.Christine Urban, USEPA Region 5, provided an extensiveoverview of available watershed management tools, resources, and funding opportunities at the federal level.Christine gave an overview of database tools such as theMidwest Spatial Decision Support System, formed todevelop, promote, and disseminate web-based watershedmanagement decision support systems for use inMidwestern watersheds. She also introduced watershedplan builder tools available from USEPA, and severalother available watershed management tools. She presentedissues related to watershed based NPDES permittingand gave successful examples. Christine provided ahandout of an extensive amount of information andresources available from USEPA, and announcedAssessment and Watershed Protection Program Grantsthat are available for 2008.Amy Walkenbach, Manager of the Nonpoint Source Unitfor IEPA Bureau of Water, presented watershed managementprograms and perspectives at the state level. Shepresented progress with TMDLs in Illinois and anoverview of the Clean Lakes Program, the Lake EducationAssistance Program, and Section 319 Program funding.Amy gave insights into IEPA perspectives on watershedbased permitting and pollutant trading programs.Melissa Smith, Outreach Coordinator for Partners forConservation, Illinois Department of Natural Resources(IDNR), presented resources available from INDR. Shegave an overview of the Partners for ConservationProgram and funding assistance available, as well asinformation and requirements of several other IDNRsponsored programs with available watershed managementfunding, including the Conservation ReserveEnhancement Program, the Landowner IncentiveProgram, the Conservation Stewardship Program, theIllinois Wildlife Action Plan, and the Illinois Habitat Fund.Melissa provided several handouts with informationabout these programs. Two of Illinois’ most organizedand well developed watershedgroups provided an overview of theirformation and current watershedmanagement activities. The DuPageRiver Salt Creek Workgroup (DRSCW) was represented byStephen McCracken of The Conservation Foundation.Stephen explained how the workgroup was formed andhow its municipality, public agency, and consultingmembership work together to achieve workgroup goals in360 square miles of watershed, including watershedmodel development, special studies into dissolved oxygen, chloride and other impairments, and habitat evaluations. The workgroup is working to build technical andstakeholder support for dam modification projects toimprove in stream dissolved oxygen and ecological conditions.Funding is provided by dues paid by membershipsthat are used as matching funds for IEPA grants andmember in-kind services. The Fox River Study Group (FRSG) was represented byPaul Anderson of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Paulprovided an overview of FRSG formation and currentefforts in over 2,600 square miles of watershed. The studygroup’s municipal, special district, and agency contributorsare assisted by numerous in-kind contributors workingtogether to develop watershed models to study nutrient, dissolved oxygen, and other impairments.Attendees gained insights into the advantages of smallerwatershed groups with respect to more focused studiesand logistics for meetings, etc., as well as advantages oflarger watershed groups with respect to broad stakeholderinput and leveraging funding. More information onthe activities of these watershed groups is available atwww.drscw.org and www.foxriverstudygroup.org.The symposium wrapped up with open forum questionsand discussions with regulatory representatives andwatershed group leadership. Attendees heard about farmore tools and programs than they thought existed toassist with watershed management, achieving the symposium’sgoals. Please contact Dan Bounds at the numberor email address below for more information aboutthe symposium and the information discussed. If you are interested in watershed management topicsand would like to join IWEA’s Watershed ManagementCommittee, please contact Watershed ManagementCommittee Chair Dan Bounds at BoundsDG@cdm.comor (312) 346-5000.9

SJWP CANDIDATE WORKS HARD FOR HER FUTURE AND FOR A CUREBy Larry Ziemba, Public Education and Student Affairs CommitteeDaria Zelasko, a student atthe University of Illinois,Urbana-ChampaignCampus, has received numerousawards from IWEA, beginningwhen she was a student at MotherTheodore Guerin High School inRiver Grove. Her awards includeour Senior Division Clean WaterAward Grand Prize and IllinoisStockholm Junior Water Prize, each, three times (2003 – 2005).Furthermore, in 2006, she wonour Technical Presentation Award acknowledging themost outstanding paper presented at our AnnualConference. In 2003, Daria was the first recipient of the IllinoisStockholm Junior Water Prize. As our 2005 Illinois SJWPwinner, she was selected as one of three finalists at theNational SJWP competition when her research projectwas chosen as one of the top three from the 46 state SJWPwinners at the National Competition. Her research project, done as a high school student, studied indigenousbacterial remediation, culminating a three year study ofthe use of naturally occurring microbes to degrade ortransform water contaminants into nontoxic forms.“This is a cause near and dear to my heart afterbeing diagnosed with thyroid cancer duringmy freshman year in college.”Daria is a junior at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Campus studying Bioengineering, majoringin Biomaterials with a minor in Chemistry. Daria is currentlyworking under the guidance of Professor Danao ofthe Department of Agricultural and BiologicalEngineering, whose interests are biological applicationsof biosensor technology, optical sensing, ultrasound, enzyme stabilization, and biocatalysis. Daria has beenconducting biosensing research for Professor Danao thatseeks to reconstitute bioactive cellulose and corn zeinmembranes from ionic liquids. The stability and dissolutionproperties of ionic liquids identify them as prime, environmentally friendly solvents for biosensing applicationsin place of traditional volatile organic media. After graduation, Daria intends to continue her studies ingraduate school with a focus on nanomedicine and drugdelivery systems. Nanomedicine is the medical applicationof nanotechnology. Nanotechnology broadly refersto a field of applied science and technology whose unifyingtheme is the control of matter on the atomic and molecularscale, normally one to 100 nanometers; and thefabrication of devices with critical dimensions that liewithin that size range. It covers areas such as nanoparticledrug delivery and possible future applications of molecularnanotechnology and nanovaccinology (for additionalinformation on these technologies, search Googleor Wikipedia). Of particular interest to the water environmentprofessional is that current problems withnanomedicine involve understanding the issues relatedto toxicity and the environmental impact of nanoscalematerials.Daria has been actively involved with the Society ofWomen Engineers (SWE) since her freshman year and hasserved on a variety of committees and several electedpositions. The SWE strives to establish engineering as adesirable career choice for women, and does so throughvarious outreach, diversity, recruitment, and professionaldevelopment events and initiatives. Daria states that “ithas been a fantastic support system and I have been honoredto serve as Web-Based Information Director andSecretary over the years. I also look forward to my recentlyelected role as Internal Vice President.”Also, she is currently active on SWE's Community ServiceCommittee, helping to organize the American CancerSociety's Relay for Life at the University of Illinois. Dariasays that “this is a cause near and dear to my heart afterbeing diagnosed with thyroid cancer during my freshmanyear in college.” On the very day of Relay for Life 2006, shewas diagnosed with thyroid cancer and, fortunately, aftersurgery and radiation, she is now a two-year survivor. Asa result of her experiences and the people that she hasmet during them, she became increasingly involved withColleges Against Cancer (CAC). This past year, Dariaserved as a Survivorship Co-Chair, and she indicates that“I am very excited for my upcoming role as CAC VicePresident!”If you are interested in helping Daria and the IllinoisSWE in their efforts at the American Cancer Society'sRelay for Life at the University of Illinois, online donationscan be made at her team's website page athttp://main.acsevents.org/goto/SWE08.10
